Texas quarterback Colt McCoy takes out big insurance policy
Posted by Aaron Wilson on July 26, 2009 8:35 PM ET

University of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy is regarded as one of the top prospects for the 2010 NFL Draft.

And just in case he suffers a career-ending injury during his senior year, McCoy has obtained some hefty financial protection.

According to Joe Schad of ESPN.com, McCoy has taken out an insurance policy with a payout ranging between $3 million and $5 million.

"The premium is astronomical," McCoy's father, Brad McCoy, said. "But the payback in the event of a catastrophe puts the monetary value there. We felt it was the prudent thing to do."

It makes sense.

When you're talking about potentially making millions of dollars playing a sport where major injuries are commonplace, why take a chance?

McCoy was the runner-up in the Heisman balloting last season.

He owns the Longhorns school records for most career touchdown passes, career passing yards, victories, total touchdowns as well as several other passing marks.

McCoy also rushed for 11 touchdowns last season and was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.

When did he become a "top prospect"?

As long as he doesn't play K-State I think he'll be fine.

I would rather hand-wash Matt Cassel's three day-old sweaty sack while serving Sauto and Duck Dong Sake with the other hand than see Dolt McCroyle in a fucking Chiefs Uniform.

I hope Bradford goes #1 overall, thus proving that The Great Spirit is the One True God, causing Tebow and McCoy to forsake their false god and worship The Great Spirit but they have to have Indian names issued by Bradford, and Tebow will be "Pisses On Balls", and McCoy will be "Finger Up Ass".

Now that's a good after school special.

FWIW, Brandt thinks Tebow and McCoy are top 10 prospects:

cfn has McCoy as a "franchise" player

as someone who lives in austin and ends up watching a lot of ut football(i'm a red raider), McCoy can ball. He is athletic as sh*t, and makes most of the plays for that UT offense. his game may not transfer to the nfl, and i don't know if he'll be a 1st rounder, but dude can play college football.

Gil Brandt is so useless now, all of his draft stuff is basically how the guys brother went fishing with the 3rd cousin of a president 60 years ago.

Colt McCoy has alot of issues as an NFL prospect. He's had a problem with injuries, he's not overly big or tall, he's in the spread etc.

For every 1 person that thinks he's a franchise player you can find another that thinks he's a 2nd round prospect.

Only Brent Musberger would draft Colt McCoy in the first round.

IIRC Gil was the first one to break the news KC was taking Jackson in the first.

Those QB's next year will be an adventure. The one thing in Tebow's favor is that he has good size and toughness, used to being hit more than some of the others. In other words, to me there is some potential value other than just straight up QB for him. I have no idea where any of the three will be picked (Bradford, McCoy, and Tee-Blow). I guess it will just come down to what some team sees potential wise after this coming season.

If Freeman is worth a mid first round pick, I'd imagine those guys go in the first.

That is a good point regarding Freeman. It really is going to depend on how some of these NFL QB "situations" shake out this year. There could end up being some desperate teams looking for at least back up insurance.

Josh Freeman is a guy that wows scouts, do you think any of them will do that?

He has a far better arm than McCoy and Bradford do, as far as Tebow well he is what he is.

I've watched McCroyle play. He has a decent arm, people like him. He'll get wasted in the NFL.
