Longtime Eagles assistant Jim Johnson dead at 68
The Associated Press

Jim Johnson, whose attacking defenses helped the Eagles to one Super Bowl appearance and five NFC title games, has died. He was 68.

Johnson had taken a leave of absence from the team in May as he continued to battle a cancerous tumor on his spine. The Eagles announced his death on Tuesday afternoon.

A veteran of 22 years as an NFL assistant, Johnson is regarded as one of the top defensive minds in the league, known for building units able to pressure the quarterback from every angle. His defenses consistently ranked among the best in the league, including last season, when the Eagles finished third in total defense and fell one victory short of the Super Bowl.

Johnson is survived by his wife, Vicky, two children and four grandchildren.

geez, I didn't even know he had cancer. RIP, he was a great D-coordinator. I guess that is why he never got a head coaching gig, because he would have deserved it.

Shame that ESPN decides that Brett Favre is more important than Jim Johnson.

A lot of people don't know that he was Mizzou's quarterback in the early sixties. And he was pretty darned good. RIP Mizzou Tiger.

Rip, Jim. One of the greatest DC's ever. I had no idea that he was sick. Just goes to show how life is fragile. Best to be prepared because you just never know when your time is up.

They replaced him as D-coord and the new guy said he wanted to have Johnson on as part of his coaching staff in any aspect.

Real sad to see him go. His defense was as a big reason for me loving the eagles.

Jim Johnson was one of the best defensive minds we've seen in our generation.

He continuously found new and creative ways to bring pressure.

I'll miss watching his defenses.

RIP JJ.

Very rare we ever hear coordinators ever going (if there are any) to the NFL HOF, but Johnson and LeBeau should both qualify.

Yeah, LeBeau didn't do well as a HC, but he has been very good for Pittsburgh.

Bud Carson should go, as well.

Wow. I hadn't heard of this. I guess Favre staying retired was bigger news, sadly. Johnson was a hell of a DC. I always wondered why he never became a head coach. Sad.

- just checked nfl.com and Favre is still the lead story. That's a slap in the face to Johnson.

Jim Johnson was happy doing his job as a DC and turned down interviews for head coaching positions.

Teams stopped asking to interview him a number of years ago.

He made it known that he had no desire to be a head coach.

Probably a smart move. Great OCs or DCs don't always make great or even good HCs.
