Demonpenz Avatar got me thinking.

I'm sure this is a repost, but I don't care.

What do you consider the worst chokejob ever?

2008 Memphis Mens Basketball team?

Jean Van De Velde 1999 British Open Collapse?

Latrell Sprewells incident with PJ Carlisimo?

Also, what about the worst choke job you've witnessed in person.

Worst Chokejob ever is the Memphis Tigers vs. Kansas in 2008.

The worst I've seen in person is probably the Chargers losing to the Patriots in the 2006 playoffs after Marlon Mcree intercepted a pass on 4th down and instead of going down, tried to run the fucking ball back, got stripped, and gave New England one last chance to win.

I know I will catch some flack for this, but I don't agree that it was a chokejob. Memphis was crappy all year at making FTs. They had a nice run in the tourney with their FT shooting, but they finally reverted back to form in that game. And let's at least give KU some credit. It's not like Memphis was ahead the whole game. KU was ahead at several points throughout the game. The best team won that game, IMO.

Dude...

To this day...

I still feel bad for Jean Van De Velde...

What was HE thinking?

Pulling out that driver on 18?

It literally made no sense. He had a breakdown of epic proportions...almost trying to hit the ball out of the water...and then he sinks a 20 foot putt to take a 7 or an 8 to at least save some face and get himself into a playoff and he goes beserk like he just won the thing.

It was hilarious/sad.

Choke jobs noteable Chris Weber and the entire fab five team
The Seattle Supersonics getting beat by the nuggets 8 seed V 1 seed.
Cards 1985 unable to close out the royals and falling apart
The yankees up 3 games to 0 choking away to the sox in 2004
The redsox in 03 against the yankees.
John Kerney missing an extra point to go to OT and possibly the playoffs after the Saints made a crazy last second latteral.
The buffalo bills going to the superbowl 4 times and not getting a win
Northwest bearcats getting beat a couple years ago I can't remember the actual situation but Terjsma screwed up somehow. The bearcats go to the National Champ 4 years in a row and choke.
Marrine Hossa vowing to sign with the Detriot Redwings to win a stanley cup. Leaving the Penguins, then goes pointless in the finals, awkward handshake ensues with the pittsburgh penguins

I actually have to agree here. If they were clutch FT shooters all year and then lost it in the final then yes I agree worst choke ever. But the truth is, they were one of the worst FT shooting teams in the country that year. The put it together in the tourney and shot well. But in the end, their team haunted them. This actually wasn't a choke, they lost because they didn't have the fundamentals all year.

One other way to think of it. If cleveland is in the NBA finals game 7 and they're up and the opposing team starts hacking the shit out of Shaq when he has the ball and he can't make FTs is that a choke? Or is that good strategy because you know he can't shoot the FT?

Up 35-7 early in the 3rd Quarter and that team decides to take a shit. By the end of that quarter it was 35-31. Then to lose it in OT 38-41 was a gigantic kick in the nuts.

Boston. We've had some of the greatest moments in sports history. Dynastys. Etc etc

But also some the bitterest choke jobs evahhhh.

1.Game 6. Up 5-3. Nobody on. 2 outs. 2 strikes. Bottom of the 10th. Red Sox lose the 1986 World Series.

2.Game 7. 2003 ALCS. The curse is going to end. Up 5-2 bottom of the eighth. Grady leaves Pedro in. And leaves him in. And leaves him in. Until its tied. You KNEW it was over. Luckily the Patriots won a thriller in Miami days later, never lost again that year while the Sox traded for Curt Schilling so the sting didn't last as long as '86.

3. Up 21-3 in 2007 AFCCG the defense collapses at Indy. Still, they are up 34-31 with 2 minutes to go, but they let Manning drive 80 yards.

4. A year later. 16-0. Up 14-10. 2 minutes to go. The defense let's another Manning drive 80 yards. Two last minute 80 yard drives away from 5 Super Bowl wins in the decade.

5. 1979. Game 7. Stanley Cup Semis at Montreal. Bruins are 2 minutes away from ending the jinx. Too many men on the ice.

I don't know if I'd count the Bills Super Bowl losses as chokes necessarily, because aside from the first one I don't think they were favored, and may have been heavy dogs in the last two.
A note on that Oilers/Bills game- it was actually blacked out in that part of the country. For some reason all the fans were mad that Buffalo was a Wild Card team that year and sort of wrote them off, and so they didn't buy tickets.
I went to a bar in the Rochester area that had it on TV. At the beginning there was like no one there, then about midway through the third quarter people started trickling in. By the end of the game the place was packed with Bills fans all acting like they'd been there the whole time. I hate the Bills so it was painful to watch.
I lived in Buffalo for the last three Super Bowls they lost when I was in college. You want to talk about a city full of depressed people when they lost? Wow. It was fun to see though, as they went through the seasons, quite a roller coaster ride.

I would say the 2004 Yankees losing to the Sox after leading 3 games to none is the biggest choke job.

You forgot 1978 and Ben Dreith's "roughing the passer".

I think it's a close race between the 1986 World Series (one out to go, and the ball goes between Buckner's legs) and the 2007 Patriots. But I'd have to give the nod to the 2007 Patriots. 18-0, ahead in the SB, and late in the game you give up a Hail Mary pass off a guy's facemask? Lock the thread.
