Sources: Chiefs may sign Toomer

August 3, 2009 10:25 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

The Kansas City Chiefs are leaning toward signing veteran receiver Amani Toomer, according to two NFL sources.

Toomer could be signed as soon as Tuesday if the Chiefs follow through their current thinking, the sources said. Toomer was one of three veteran receivers Kansas City worked out Monday as their early training-camp work showed the team they may need more help for new quarterback Matt Cassel.

Kansas City also looked at receivers D.J. Hackett and David Terrell. Toomer is the most accomplished of the three. Despite the fact that he will turn 35 next month, Toomer can still be productive. He had 48 catches for the Giants last season, which was his 13th with the club.

Adding Toomer would be similar to what the Chiefs are doing on defense: Loading up on veteran leadership. With the core of the Kansas City roster on the young side, new general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley, are adding leadership at key spots. The team has added linebackers Zach Thomas and Mike Vrabel and safety Mike Brown. All three players are known leaders.

Earlier this offseason, the Chiefs signed veteran receiver Bobby Engram. Toomer would likely play a similar role and give Cassel another steady hand to play with. Toomer is not going to burn teams with his speed, but he will come up with some solid plays and he can help this team take the next step.

He has a reputation as being a leader who helps young players. He has 668 career catches and a Super Bowl ring to show his young teammates if he ends up in Kansas City. He is less than two years removed from winning a Super Bowl (over Pioli's Patriots). That type of veteran experience can only help.

If the Chiefs get this deal done, it won't make them an instant playoff contender. But it will be another positive step made by the new regime.

Toomer would be a nice addition in the short-term and would help Cassel out quite a bit this season. If the price is right, bring him aboard.

Quick question....anyone know why Marvin Harrison is still out floating around? I know he's lost a step, but I can't imagine he wouldn't be able to be a nice complement to Bowe. Is his legal troubles in Philly really keeping everyone else at bay?

Harrison has had a problem with injuries and staying on the field as of late I think that's why the Chiefs are shying away. If you've noticd things Haley has said he really detests players who get injured.

I'm guessing he's been a model citizen.

I'm also guessing that Haley sees something in him. He has ideal size, so it's possible that Haley feels he can "coach him up".

Just speculation on my part.

Engram
Toomer

Webb/Darling/dark horse

this would actually round out a decent reciever corps that can help the special teams as well.

Tony G left a HUGE MASSIVE HOLE on offense that Toomer could help fill.

He could make Cassel alot more comfortable on gameday.

Report: Chiefs "leaning" towards signing Toomer
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 4, 2009 11:59 AM ET
After trying out Amani Toomer, D.J. Hackett, and David Terrell in a workout Monday, the Chiefs may be nearing a decision on who to sign.

ESPN's Bill Williamson writes that Toomer will be the pick as "early as Tuesday if the Chiefs follow through their current thinking."

Toomer is one of the best veteran receivers available, but the signing is an indictment on Kansas City's young receiver depth.

The Chiefs apparently don't love what they see on the depth chart after Dwayne Bowe, Mark Bradley, and 36-year-old free agent signee Bobby Engram.

Toomer could challenge Bradley for snaps, which would ruin his burgeoning status as a deep fantasy football sleeper.

Any veteran signing could also push a player like Devard Darling or Jeff Webb off the roster.

Unlike other rebuilding teams, the Chiefs continue to load up on veteran players to provide an example for the young players that actually have a future with the organization.

The strategy is not so different from what Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick did with the Patriots in 2000.

He does believe me even the best wideouts drop passes...Sometimes even happens where the best wideouts in the league lead in that category.

Its too overlooked at times imo.

Anyway, before i continue to ramble, solid receiver makes a lot of clutch catches and provides solid veteran leadership.

Ha. Having outperformed the other two (younger) receivers that were in for a look, I don't have a problem with this. And a one year deal is a safe bet. (Carl would have signed him to a 3 yr deal with a fat signing bonus.) Maybe getting pointers from a WR with SB ring will do Bowe & the other young WRs some good. That and they can get the Senior discount when they're eating breakfast at Perkins with Toomer. :)
