New Homepage

Our old front page was pretty stale, so at penguinz recommendation, I installed a CMPS that is much easier to modify. It's still definitely a work in progress, but hopefully it's an improvement over our previous front page.

Let me know if you have any suggestions, or if you find anything that's not working right. I'll be tweaking it here and there in the future, but at least it'll be more dynamic. Maybe people will actually start using it!

You can't "turn things off," but you can collapse anything to only show the header using the little arrow gizmo in the upper-right. Of course, if you're going to do that, you might as well just bookmark the Lounge directly (which is what 99% of people do anyway).

I like it, nice work. I had thrown the old one up as something to quickly replace what we had before, with the idea to do this in the future. At the time none of the tools seemed to integrate with vB that well, at least not for free.

I'll mention that each of the little areas are called "modules" and I can add and remove them all over the place, so they may change.

At some point, I may add one that lets us feature threads as "news articles" on the front page. That takes a lot more interaction from an administrative standpoint though, so I haven't done that yet.

If anyone's really bored and wants to look into other "vbadvanced cmps" modules, I'd be happy to consider any that look especially nifty.

FWIW, the whole thing is configurable in the AdminCP. Feel free to tweak things as you see fit. I mainly wanted to get it installed and running so we had something to play with.

Yeah, I'd imagine that most long-time users will still bookmark the Lounge. My goal is for the site to look more cohesive and useful for guests visiting the front page. Since we don't really have content other than the forum, it just makes sense to have it all tie into the forums.

Alas, they are gone. I could probably bring them back as an RSS module, but I hate to make the page too much more cluttered. If there's strong support for that, let me know.

Do you have a favorite (or couple favorites)? I wouldn't mind adding a couple in an RSS feed, but I'd rather not having 8 of them like we used to.

I had once found some tools that would allow you to put together a bunch of rss streams into one, they may work better than they used to, and we could have one on the front page.

I added a couple of feeds for Chiefs News and NFL News that aggregate some of the old ones together late last night. Hopefully that'll suffice.

A question, though: How come now when I change CP's layout via the Quick Style Chooser to something other than 'At Work' it will change for that moment, but once I enter a new thread it reverts back to 'At Work'?

Dunno. Probably a screwy cookie or something. Try changing it in your UserCP instead.
