Two of Mexico’s Premier First Division Teams to
Meet in Long-Time Rivalry on September 16
Professional soccer returns to Arrowhead Stadium next month when two of Mexico’s premier First Division teams, Club Deportivo Guadalajara S.A. de C.V. (Chivas) meets long-time rival Club America in a celebration of Mexican Independence Day.
Tickets for the Wednesday, September 16th game, which will be played at 8:30 PM, go on sale starting Thursday, August 27th at 10 AM. Prices start at $25 and may be purchased at the Arrowhead Stadium ticket office (Monday through Saturday, 8:30 AM to 5 PM) or online at http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/06004318EC179ECA. Tickets can also be claimed through Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000 or online at Ticketmaster.com. Group ticket packages are also available through the Chiefs at 816/920-4539.
In the announcement of the game, Kansas City Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt, whose family has a celebrated history in soccer and are founding operators of Major League Soccer franchises in Dallas and Columbus, Ohio, had this to say;
“We are pleased to be able to host one of the most historic annual soccer matches in the world in the ‘Clasico Nacional.’ Chivas de Guadalajara and Club America represent two of the most passionate fan bases in the sport and we are excited to bring the game to the New Arrowhead.”
Both Club Deportivo Chivas and Club America have a long history of competition dating back to 1943 and are considered to be the upper class of Mexican soccer. Club Deportivo boasts a record 11 league titles while America has 10. In the teams’ most recent meeting this year, Chivas prevailed, 1-0.
The match, known as “el Clasico de los Clasicos,” is routinely followed by fans throughout North America, especially those of Mexican heritage who gravitate to their respective clubs because of their employment of players of Mexican birth.
This latest match-up is sponsored by Bud Light, Jose Cuervo and Boost Mobile and marketed by Soccer United Marketing who holds all commercial rights to Major League Soccer, the U.S. Soccer Federation, and the Mexican National Team among other events.
Arrowhead’s soccer heritage dates back to the early ‘70s shortly after the stadium opened. It has featured World Cup qualifying round matches and the U.S. Olympic Women’s team. In the past month, Arrowhead was named as a finalist for a bid to host the FIFA World Cup™ in either 2018 or 2022.
