From Scout.com as of August 9:

Inside Linebacker
Nate Webster (SLB) - Probably could still start if needed.
Derek Smith - His agent, Frank Bauer, said the 34-year old LB still wants to play.
Teddy Lehman - Talented, but oft-injured LB.
Napoleon Harris - Probably a backup at this point in his career.
Junior Seau - He hasn't said if he still wants to play.
Ryan Nece (SLB) - He's a solid, versatile backup.

Outside Linebacker
Derrick Brooks (WLB) - Will need to find a team that plays a cover-2. He said recently that still wants to play.
Marcus Washington (SLB) - Decent pass rusher in a 4-3 scheme from OLB.
Morlon Greenwood (WLB) - Long-time starter for the Dolphins and Texans and probably should be able to find a starting job if a team needs one during training camp.
Donnie Edwards (ILB/WLB) - 36-year old LB who could find work as camps get underway.
Junior Seau (ILB) - Still hasn't retired yet.
Antwan Peek (SLB/OLB in 3-4) - Missed all of last season with a knee injury and dealt with knee problems in 2007.
Dontarrious Thomas (WLB/MLB) - Versatility may help him find work as a backup.
Alex Lewis (SLB) - The Lions recently released him.
Willie McGinest (OLB in 3-4/DE in 4-3) - Best suited in a 3-4 as a backup. He reportedly still wants to play.
Shantee Orr (SLB/OLB in 3-4) - Decent pass-rushing OLB. Would be a solid backup.
Rocky Boiman (SLB/MLB) - Solid special team player and can play at least two positions at linebacker.
Carlos Polk (OLB in 3-4) - Veteran who fits in a 3-4 scheme as a fifth or sixth LB.
Gary Stills (SLB/OLB in 3-4) - Good special teams player, but was selected in the UFL draft.
Gilbert Gardner (SLB/WLB) - Former third-round pick of the Colts who fits in as a fifth or sixth linebacker.
Kris Griffin (ILB/MLB) - Solid special teamer and deep backup LB.

It's that list, however accurate it may/may not be, and the upcoming cuts for the Chiefs to look over.

Thomas only signed on with KC so he could smack McIntosh in practice during the week. Those seasons in Miami still burn in his memory. But McIntosh was either trying to pass the endurance test or running with the 3rd string. Zach just decided he'll catch him in hell.

The truth is most of these veterans weren't even brought in for leadership but the Chiefs had alot of holes on the roster and these veterans were a cheap option.

Holding out for an injury settlement?

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/08/31/rosenhaus-says-zach-thomas-isnt-retiring/ (yes, totally reliable site I know)

In response to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter that veteran linebacker Zach Thomas will retire this week, agent Drew Rosenhaus says that Thomas will not be retiring.

Says Rosenhaus, via Twitter: "Zach Thomas is not retiring. He is progressing from his injury & he fully expects to have a great season with the Chiefs in 09."

So what gives? Well, it might just be a matter of semantics. Schefter said that Thomas will retire or reach an injury settlement or be cut.

If Thomas retires, he gets no money. So, quite possibly, he might be digging in his heels in the hopes of a parting gift from the Chiefs.

Per NFLPA records, Thomas is due to receive a base salary of $1 million in 2009.

If he is cut prior to the season, I believe he doesn't make a dime. If he is on the roster on opening day, he gets a million guaranteed.

The thing that will make this interesting is that I don't think you can cut guys who are hurt without an injury settlement.

If I were an old player, I would latch onto a team, twist an ankle, then... basically milk it for a few weeks... get an injury settlement and then put a few extra 100K in the bank.

Not bad work if you can get it.

If he's only looking for a free lunch, i think Pioli plays prison ball.

I really hoped he would give us the 90 tackles he gave Dallas. If Mays carries pre-season into the schedule, that'd be great. I hope it hasnt all been a mirage. Being let go by a bungles team anything but loaded at LB will cause me to hold my breath a bit.
