The days prior to the 2008 regular-season opener were dominated by discussion regarding whether Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman would be able to play due to a torn PCL.

This year, the question is whether Merriman will be able to play after allegedly assaulting a D-level television celebrity named Tila Tequila.

Merriman allegedly "choked and physically restrained" Tequila as she tried to leave his San Diego residence.

He was taken into custody at 3:45 p.m. local time and charged with battery and false imprisonment. Tequila was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

According to ABC Local in Los Angeles, Shawne Merriman was arrested early Saturday and charged with suspicion of assault.
Merriman allegedly "choked and restrained" MTV reality show personality Tila Nguyen, who is better known as Tila Tequila, as Nguyen was trying to leave the scene. Merriman was arrested on the premises, while Nguyen was taken to a local hospital. Nguyen's citizen arrest report also accuses Merriman of false imprisonment and battery.

Deputies arrested San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman early Sunday morning for allegedly choking and restraining his MTV star girlfriend as she tried to leave his Poway home.
The Sheriff's Department said Merriman's girlfriend, Tila Tequila, 27, signed a citizen's arrest warrant, charging him with battery and false imprisonment.
Deputies responded to a disturbance call at Merriman's home near the intersection of Sage Crest and Oak Knoll drives about 3:45 a.m. Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, told deputies she had been choked and physically restrained by Merriman when she tried to leave.
Tequila was treated for her injuries at Poway's Pomerado Hospital, which does not release information on patients treated for domestic violence injuries.
Merriman, 25, was taken into custody by deputies, but the Sheriff's Department would not say whether he was still in jail Sunday morning. Merriman could not be reached for comment Sunday.
Tequila is best known for her reality show, “A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila,” which ran for two seasons on MTV. The bisexual dating show featured straight men and lesbians vying for Tequila's affections.
Tequila could not be reached for comment Sunday.
According to Tequila's Twitter page, she was in town this weekend to attend her first Chargers game on Friday against the San Francisco 49ers. In several tweets, she expresses her love for Merriman.
“Im tweeting you from the next ... room ... WAKE YOUR --- UP! LOL. ... awwww U sleeping like an angel. ... SExy Sexy babay!” she wrote Saturday in one of her last messages to Merriman.
Neither Merriman nor Tequila had tweeted about the incident as of Sunday morning.
Merriman is returning to the field this season after missing nearly all of the 2008 campaign because of a major knee injury. He has not had any past run-ins with the law, but he did serve a four-game suspension in 2006 for testing positive for steriods.
The Sheriff's Department has scheduled a press conference at noon Sunday at its Kearny Mesa headquarters to talk about the arrest.

On September 6, 2009 the San Diego Sheriffs Department responded to a citizens complaint that was initiated by Tila Nguyen (aka Tila Tequila). I was taken into custody based upon that complaint. At the time, I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided. We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety. I in no way caused any harm to Ms Nguyen, however, paramedics were called and she was examined but no injuries were reported. She was released and has since returned to Los Angeles, California. There have been no charges filed against me. I want to thank the San Diego Sheriffs Department for their professionalism. I will continue to cooperate fully with the Department and I look forward to clearing my name regarding these false allegations. I want to put this behind me so I can continue to focus on a successful season for the San Diego Chargers.
