Jeans: $85. They lasted 3 years though, and were the most comfortable jeans I ever wore so I was fine with that.

A nice, button down shirt. Don't know. Probably $40 or $50

A pair of jeans. $70

A pair of dress slacks. Gah... Probably $80 or $90

A belt. Probably not more than $30

A necktie. $60

A pair of dress shoes. $120 or so

A sweater. I've probably only bought 3 sweaters. Ever. I hate sweaters. Probably $40

A winter coat. $240. I almost pulled the trigger on a $450 one. I should have. It was a nice coat.

Most of this shit was a long time ago. I've become pretty damn frugal in recent years. Especially since I started working for a retailer.

I know that sounds ridiculous coming from someone that spent $625 on a coat, but I only clothes shop every 2-3 years - mainly because the stuff I buy is still in great shape because I spent a bit more to get a higher quality article of clothing.

That's where I am, pretty much. But I have been trying to skate by and only have 5 pair of slacks, so I wear them out quickly. Couple that with my trying to push the envelope of frugal, and my clothes are getting to be ass. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to drop some cash on some threads soon.

I'd say most of the time, you get what you pay for. I remember my parents didnt want to spend $200 on an Abercrombie coat when I was in 8th grade (10 years ago :( ). They did. I'm a cheap sonofabitch. I don't know if I've ever paid retail price for any piece of clothing.

This. I have favorite brands, specifically Polo, Johnston & Murphy, Bacco Bucci, and Claiborne, but I scour outlets and unclaimed freight type places for them.

That said, I have a pair of Polo Suede Boots I got at one of the Olathe outlets for $30, that were MSRP $265 that I'd pay full price for before buying anything else similar if forced to choose. I've had them nearly a decade and they don't show the least amount of wear. It's like they're made of Highlander hide. Same thing with Bacco Bucci from a quality standpoint. Wearing them is like wearing Sherman tanks lined with cashmere on your feet.

Last week I scored two pairs of Polo cargo shorts, a pair of Banana Republic cargo shorts, a Reebok dri-fit [or whatever their name is for the tech] long sleeved shirt, and a Calvin Klein steel grey mock-turtle/zip cardigan sweater jobbie for between $5 and $7.50 apiece. [Cargo Largo had a 1/2 price clothing sale]. :thumb:

I love Cutter and Buck, too. But am content to wait until my sister's boss brings around another set with the company insignia embroidered on the sleeve or collar. ;) He does that every 6 months or so, so my golf attire is well stocked.

I also go crazy at the annual Eddie Bauer liquidations . . . chinos $5 for the next 1/2 hour? grab everything that fits.

It's gotta be pretty awesome for me to shell out more than $20 for an article of clothing, or $50 for footwear.

Though I do have my grandfather's 3 London Fog overcoats that I'm sure he paid a pretty penny for.

Back when I needed to dress well for work and lived on the east coast I spent quite a bit on clothes. I remember a $500 wool dress coat and several suits that cost about the same, and that was 20 + years ago. Thankfully, my current job and the southwest lifestyle - much more laid back - don't require that of me.

Price doesn't always mean quality, but it often does. Also, there is a cost attached to style, fiber types, and brands. While I'm not one to buy the most expensive thing in the store, I have learned that spending a little more up front often saves money in the long run.

I sell flooring for a living, which is a home fashion. Pants for your house, if you will. Often times the difference in price from one product to another is related more to appearance than performance. And more often than not, customers will pay more for the item they think looks better. I'm sure clothing sales work the same way.

I recently purchased a $150 pair Cole Haan shoes, except I paid $28 for them. Dillards marked down the last pair they had, and 11.5 just happened to be my size. $100 is usually my limit for dress shoes. I will make this pair last a long time.

Ooh. My turn.

A nice, button down shirt. Normally, I never pay more than about $35 for one. However, one time my wife and I were in Nieman Marcus several years back when the company was making lots of money, and we saw a couple of suits that were on sale, so we bought them. While I was trying them on, the salesman was bringing ties and shirts and stuff, so I got a couple of shirts. My wife paid for everything, and when I looked at the receipt when we got home, the shirts were $200 each. I had a minor seizure. They're nice shirts, but not worth that.

A pair of jeans.

I don't think I've ever paid more than about $30 for a pair of jeans. No need to pay more when Ross and TJ Maxx are around.

A pair of dress slacks.

Generally, no more than about $50. I've got a couple of pairs now, as well as a casual pair of pants, for which I paid $125, but they're really, really cool and stylish. My record, which is a huge anomaly, is $250 for a pair of pants a long time ago, which was also not a good investment.

A belt.

I've probably paid up to $40 or so. I never pay full price for a belt and only buy them when I see a good sale, so most of the time I'm paying under $30.

A necktie.

$80, but it was really, really nice. I generally spend about $50 or more on ties, because the difference between a cheap tie and a knockout tie is huge. Much bigger than the difference between pants and shirts for the most part. This is the area in which to invest your bucks.

A pair of dress shoes.

$180. I generally buy dress shoes in that range because, even if they don't look that much nicer than cheap shoes, they last longer and are more comfortable. That said, my green leather shoes that garner the most comments were a $50 buy on a clearance counter.

A sweater.

I am a maestro of sweater buying. I have really, really expensive sweaters, but I get them really cheap. I comb the Nieman Marcus Last Call store extensively for sweaters, and often get $300 to $500 sweaters for under $50. We're talking top-end sweaters, Jhane Barnes and the like. I don't think I've ever paid more than about $60, though I may have an $80 one in there somewhere.

A winter coat. Probably $250 or so for a leather jacket. I don't have expensive tastes in coats. I wear a ski parka half the time anyway.

Suit. I'll add this category, because it should be on here. Like sweaters, I am a maestro of suit buying. I've got several Armani and Hickey Freemans in the closet, and another lesser-known brand that is awesome called something like Cerrulini or something like that. These are suits that are typically in the $1,000 to $2,000 range, but I get them much cheaper through careful observation and opportunity buys when I find a great sale. I think the most I've ever paid was about $800, and it was on the same shopping trip as the $200 shirts. I consistently buy them in the $500 to $600 range, but they're steals at that price and rich Italian women raise their eyebrows when they see me.

Here's the deal with sweaters. You people who are banging on sweaters have probably only worn cheap ones. I didn't like sweaters either when I was young and just had itchy K-Mart sweaters that were made out of horses or something.

Go to a really nice department store and buy a really nice sweater on sale. I guarantee you'll come around to my way of thinking. It's cheaper than a suit, can look better, and you can wear it over a t-shirt, which means you have less dry cleaning cost. I pretty much live in sweaters during the winter.

I remember when I first had the epiphany about sweaters. It was about 13 years ago in 1996, and I was in a meeting with one of the Monforts, the guys who own the Colorado Rockies. He had a sweater on and everyone else was wearing suits, and it was quite obvious that he was the best-dressed person in the room. And it looked so comfortable, too.

WTF do you wear when your up elk hunting, it's -10 and the wind is kicking it in the ass at around 30 MPH..........a 3 wolf tee shirt?

We get to count Hunting clothes in the Winter coat dept? I've spent more than the $200 I said. I'll change my answer to $ 350.

I am hot all the time. If it's normal room temp, I am going to be too hot in a sweater. I just don't prefer to wear heavy sweaters.

I think there is a direct correlation between foot comfort and worker productivity. Someone needs to invent "dress" tennis shoes.

Agreed.

I am a thrifty shopper. I dont spend any more than I have to on these items, so I will list the least I have paid for quality new items. One of the best deals I have ever found was when a suit store was going out of business and stuff was dirt cheap. I got 2 suits,(1 italian), 3 shirts, 2 ties, a belt and a nice pair of dress shoes all for just under $200.

A nice, button down shirt. $7 above deal

A pair of jeans. $8 at Walmart

A pair of dress slacks. $15

A belt. $8 above deal

A necktie. $7 above deal

A pair of dress shoes. $12 above deal

A sweater. don't wear them. Chiefs hoodie $12

A winter coat. $30

Really, all of this is just a matter of priorities and perspective. I know that I have far more money invested in stuff like skillets, dutch ovens and grilling paraphernalia than most people would ever dream of but I probably spend less than average on dining out, entertainment and cars. What we spend on tuition for our daughter's school each year, others might use for a couple of nice vacations. It's all just a matter of what makes you happy, and isn't that, after all, why we go to work in the first place?

I'm glad I'm not a hunter. Those toys look expensive. Same with skiing.

pheasant hunt?

Pheasant Stroganoff
Sent in by Mike Marion from his friend Carla.

~ 1 pheasant, cut in pieces
~ buttermilk
~ 7 slices bacon
~ 3/4 cup flour
~ 2 1/2 tsp dry mustard
~ 3/4 tsp thyme
~ 1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper
~ 1 1/2 tsp salt
~ 1 1/2 cup chicken broth
~ 8 onions, chopped
~ 1/4 lb mushrooms, sliced, or 1 small can, drained
~ 3 tsp butter
~ 1/2 cup sour cream
~ 1/4 cup sherry

Fry the bacon in a non-stick pan until crisp. Remove and drain. Crumble when cool.

Drain bacon grease from pan and save.

In a bowl, mix the flour, mustard, thyme, pepper and salt together.

Heat 2 tbsp of the bacon grease in the skillet. Roll the pheasant pieces in the flour and add to the grease.

Brown the meat in batches using 2 tbsp of the bacon grease each batch and wipe out the skillet between batches. Drain meat on paper towels.

When all the meat is browned, wipe out the skillet and add all the meat to it.

Add the broth, bring to a boil, cover and reduce to a simmer.

Simmer until meat is tender.

While the meat is simmering, melt the butter in a skillet and sauté the onion and mushrooms until tender.

When meat is tender, stir the onion/mushroom mixture and sour cream into the meat/broth mixture. Warm through for 5 minutes but do not boil.

When warmed through, stir in the sherry and crumbled bacon. Simmer until heated again.

Serve over cooked noodles.

Enjoy.

I did many years ago. Mostly in the Concordia area. Matter of fact a group of us still own a house in Aurora. I just don't have a big desire to carry a gun and kill things at the present time. Maybe I will later on, but not right now.

I hear ya, my father gets burnt out on it, he hunts birds mostly, he's getting up there, i suppose. Hell he used to rock @ large mouth bass fishing, he's gotten to where he ONLY fishes through the ice for crappie. I never really got in to those things, but did enjoy lookin' for morel mushrooms and eating them, lol, mom would fry them up.

We'd also always look for arrowheads in fields and i've told this story but, yeah, enjoy the hell out of both of the last two.

Sweaters are great but as you said they have to be off a fairly high quality. They are kind of similar to wool dress slacks in that the cheap ones are quite uncomfortable but the better ones are some of the most comfortable clothes you can find.

In most cases, I would agree, but a good thick (Non Thad/Biff/Chaz wool model) from Cabela's or an Army Navy store, is great when up elk hunting, or when sitting around in a goose blind when it's -30 and the wind is kicking it in the ass.

The only thing more Gaylord than a regular sweater is a sweater vest. :thailor: My company handed us each one at a meeting last year, and I couldn't give it away fast enough. I was like "WTF do we have here? What kind of a flit boy, Nancy set up are they trying to pass our direction? Hey, but it would look good on you, do you want mine as well?" I gave it away to a co-worker from CA. I left him with the parting words "I hope if you run into Richard Simmons in the airport, you're not wearing that thing."
