I've never figured it out. I think advancing the ball is a good thing, and apparently you can still lateral the ball after you've been tackled.

My big mystery is why anyone ever passes the ball in lacrosse. From what I've seen, you can just run the whole length of the field and take a shot right in front of the goalie, so I don't understand why a person would pass it.
