Chiefs | Haley open for others to design plays
Fri, 09 Oct 2009 09:52:49 -0700
Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star (http://www.kffl.com/link/276), reports Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.kffl.com/team/21/nfl) head coach Todd Haley (http://www.kffl.com/player/14112/nfl) said he is open for people in the organization to make suggestions about changes to the team's offense. Haley is also open to QB Matt Cassel (http://www.kffl.com/player/12088/nfl) designing some plays to use.

What play would you design for Haley?

How about one where the eligible receivers actually run routes long enough to convert on 3rd down?

That's a start.

easy . . . we just need to design some better blocking schemes and have more effective 1st downs. we're not as far away from being a good team as some on here are convinced. i think we just need to win one and start to gain some confidence.

as far as defense is concerned, there are some major problems. we need to get with the whatever it takes to win way of thinking haley preached in the pre-season.

I'd make Niswanger an eligible receiver and send him deep. A little further Rudy. Keep going, almost there (quick, someone lock the door before he gets back in)...

I think this play speaks for itself.

edit:

I see we are on a similar page here....

reedit:

Oh, the yellow is the path of the ball following the snap, light blue is motion before the, and red lines are obviously the blocking scheme. The main goal on this play is for Cassel to let Niswanger get mauled by a blitzing D.

Maybe if we included a WR like Quinten Lawrence on those end-arounds it would help LJ on those runs between the tackle. We don't have to give it to Lawrence, it just gives the defense something else to think about on the runs.

Also, take a page from Baltimore's playbook against the Chargers. Set up the bubble screen except have the supposed blocker (in their case Kelley Washington) leave his block and sprint down the field.

Oh yeah, and why not a few more jump balls to Bowe. He'll get 'em.

If its 3rd and 10, I would do a play thats 10yds or more out. It seems no one told Todd thats how this game works.

We need our entire playbook built around drawing the defense offsides. Shifts, adjustments, motions, audibles, the chicken dance, you get the picture.

Let's line up most of our roster on the goal line, tell them to run until they hear the whistle, open up the gate to the practice field that leads to the road, and never blow the whistle.

Here's the quote. While the above makes it sound like Haley is asking guys to give him play suggestions, he's actually just saying that if guys who put in film work want to offer input, he'll lend them an ear if it has merit:

Q: In the pre-season you were talking about how Matt Cassel would give you little ideas for plays. Does he still offer much input?

HALEY: “The way I’ve operated all along – whatever position I’ve been in but specifically coordinator – but if guys do the research and put the film work in and have ideas or thoughts that fit into our personnel then I’m all for it. Generally when a player comes up with something like that he knows he’s a little more accountable for it. The players try to make it work. It’s a as-it-comes basis. All these quarterbacks do a great job of studying the tape, understanding what they’re seeing from the defense and that allows a lot of times for thought. It might be a simple route adjustment. It’s the communication that goes on and that’s really happening between all of us. We watch a lot of tapes together – quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends specifically.”

So, if he's open to players calling plays....
Umm... then why doesn't he have an offensive coordinator that's more of a consultant than a playcaller?

I still don't understand why Haley doesn't have a guy on his staff who served the same role Haley served under Whisenhunt 2 years ago.

Wow, Haley seems fricken lost. As was stated above, a great start would be to design a pass play or two to pick up 8 yards on third down.

Hint: Throwing a one, or two yard pass will not cut it 95% of the time. This technique has been tried for several games this year and it DOESN'T WORK! In fact, every time you think about doing that, bend down and punch youself in the nuts and yell "Bad Todd, BAD" until you stop doing it.
