Correct me if I am wrong but Denver was ranked in the low 20's for defense last year. And now they are #1 or so. Why?

Does it seem like we play a 3-4 with a 4-3 mentality? Or do we just really suck?

We just really suck. Denver went out and made the right moves to help improve their D. The Chiefs did not, simple as that.

Dummerville is playing out of his mind. Hall of fame corner back doesn't hurt either

It just seems to me we play a 3-4 but with a 4-3\Herm mentality. I always look at the 3-4 like the Steelers or Eagles which is blitz, blitz and more blitz.

Denver hasn't played anyone... bunch of cupcakes, they're not for real. That's what I've heard.

Well, I think the Pats were the first real team they have played. Dallas was lucky they weren't blown out of Arrowhead yesterday.

I have to thiink it's mostly coaching. The talent gap isn't that great.

Fucking Vonnie Holiday had probably the biggest play in the game for them to take them into OT yesterday. Vonnie fucking Holiday!!!

Unless you take into account the defensive backfield, linebackers and defensive ends.

Are they better? Sure. They're not stacked with pro bowlers or anything, though.

Although there are at least a couple of pretty-sure-thing pro-bowlers (Bailey, Dumervil) I agree that it is largely a no-name defense.
Top be clear, they have won 5 games not 16 and I'm well aware of that.

Athletically and fundamentally they have pro bowl level talent at just about every level of their defense. Pass rusher (dumervil), ILB (D.J. Williams), outside coverage (champ bailey), intermediate and deep middle (Dawkins).

Their front 3 are able to hold up well enough to allow their playmakers to make plays.

Thus far they've been able to stop the run with their front 7 allowing them to keep their safety's back which negates big plays.

Personally I think their rushing D is succeptible to misdirection and will eventually start to tank. They flow VERY hard to the ball and I don't know why teams haven't exploited that more, but wouldn't be surprised if you start seeing it next week.

They're pretty solid though.

In fairness, the LB corps aren't even close.

The LB's make the 3-4 and we have arguably the worst set in the league. Granted, that only goes back to the brilliance of forcing a 3-4 down our throats, but it still can't be overlooked.

A good set of linebackers makes a HUGE difference in the 3-4. Denver doesn't have a ton more talent than we do, IMO; but they have it where it matters.

Well, that and the fact that Mike Nolan is a great DC and Pendergast is nothing more than another failed croney. Glad we hired that guy.

Denver has better linebackers, faster linebackers, and linebackers are key to a 3-4. Our linebackers have sucked for awhile now.

Romo and Brady missed a few open guys... but, part of that is also thanks to the pressure they've put on those QBs. Hopefully, they won't tank like Coyer's defense did a few years ago (I believe he was the DC) at that time... hard to keep track of the names and years the way Shanahan went through DCs.

After 7 games... if the Chiefs had been 3-4 that would be awesome. 1-6 is more likely... but 0-7 wouldn't be surprising. :-D

Nolan is doing a great job out there. He's one of those guys that make a great coordinator but a crappy HC.

They also have dumerville on the edge there and Dawkins has shown he's not ready to be put out to pasture yet, like Mike Brown.

If Haley holds his assistants to the same standards as he is holding his players, he better be hiring someone else next year...

Nolan > Pendergast

We just waited too long on everything. The new GM wanted to placate his owner by taking the old coach's situation under advisement. Herm should have been fired day 1 and a new staff put together. I think Haley was the first choice for coach, but waiting meant only the dregs of our staff and coaches that weren't wanted elsewhere made up our staff. It seems like Haley is having to do everything on this team because he doesn't have the talent in the coaches box or on the field.

If the Chiefs goal is to build a 3-4 like NE's then it won't be anything like Pittsburgh's they rarely blitz and play a lot of bend but don't break. It's not a very exciting type of defense and is nothing like the Pittsburgh type of 3-4.
