View Full Version : Movies and TV Irritating Commercials...

Is it just me, or have commercials seem to become increasingly irriating?

The flustrations I have with TV commercials:

1. Constant walking or pacing. Why is it people think they have to be constantly walking or pacing back and forth as they pimp their product? I remember one commercial for some weight loss pill where the gal literally paced back and forth in a 4ft line as she talked seriously about why you need the pill.

2. Yanking off the glasses. Interactive Brokers comes to mind on this one. Why is it they think by yanking off their glasses before they talk they are somehow more authoritative or whatever?

3. The deep "real man's" voice. This gets old quick. Coors comes to mind. Is that really Sam Elliot doing the commercial? Give it up already. It is not manly for such a manly-man to call a beer a "banquet beer" and be serious, is it?

4. Re-hashed actors. Probably one of the most flustrating of all. People you see in movies trying to be pass off as every-day people in commericals. And then you get the ones that do multiple commericals for different products but you aren't supposed to realize the pizza hut guy is also the budwesier guy, etc, etc.

5. Doctors with their lab coats. I don't remember the last time I saw a doctor or dentist wearing a lab coat when I made a visit to their office.

6. Patients advising doctors. How many drug commericals do we have now where you, the patient, are supposed to go to the doctor and tell them what is wrong with you and what pills you need?

I am sure I can think of more flustrations but that is good for now. Feel free to add.

you know what I hate...I'm doing my morning crunches routine while porn is on in the background and I realize that the scene would have been much better if the girls were wrapped in cellophane

This is a catch-22. I hate casting people in my commercials who have been in other commercials, it ruins the fake reality we're trying to establish. The problem is, you want the best actors. The best actors get jobs, because they're good. So, you kind of have to weigh the familiarity factor against the performance.
We get the casting session tapes and you see it when the guy pops on screen. it's like " Oh, there's Doritos permanent smile guy" or "Mountain dew cheetah tacking guy" etc. etc.
Our PlayStation guy was the Geico guy a while ago and also a Holiday Inn guy, but he's damn funny. Now he can be the PlayStation guy. He's actually kinda like getting a SNL actor or something because he is recognizable and funny. So, we're already leaning into it.

what about watching commercials on an old TV in the Garage and having the volume of the commericals 50 x louder than the show you are watching... does that count?

Great point and this is exactly why you see so many of the same actors pimping different products. If you ever need a older tailgating guy, have your people call my people. ;)

This. I'm always the last to know about a new and/or funny commercial because I DVR almost everything and fast forward through the commercials.

It really comes down to 3 things for me, and they are the reasons I haven't watched television ever since my 2nd DVR died several months ago... well, that, and the content mostly sucks.

1) Never make your own music. It will suck. Of course there will be exceptions, but do you really want to take that chance? Just... don't. Obvious examples are like Subway and freecreditreport.com. Even picking a song is risky, such as Toyota's save on zero or whatever the f*** that was. Walk into an AIDS tree.

2) Don't be repetitive. You especially don't need to say the number 14 times in a row if it's right there on the screen. Pretty much every infomercial, local car dealerships, etc. Die in a fire.

3) If you mix #1 and #2 above, seriously, die in a burning AIDS tree.

I agree that they have become much more irritating. You can almost hear the panic of the company through their retarded fucking ads.

I fucking loathe car commercials though. Fucking stupid. They are the most unoriginal piles of shit ever made. Has anybody else noticed that every single pickup has won some kind of award that they tote at the end of their respective commercial?

I know collectively Americans are pretty dumb and naive, but please give some of us credit and have a through provoking ad or something... fuck! Just put bouncing titties on the screen with your name below it, I'll buy something then.

The Geico stack of money commercials need to die...like Michael Jackson.

And I hate any commercial that says "CALL NOW!!!'

Screw you, I'm kinda busy right now. Scratching the twins...

Oh man, how could I have left that off the list???

"You will only get this price if you call in the next 20 minutes, cause we can't do this all day".

3 months later you still see the same commercail 25,000 times a day...ROFL

Or, you get the ones where the phones are ringing like crazy in the background. That is another thing that is just irritating as all hell.

I can udnerstand that. I guess my biggest irk with it is when you get someone who was actually in movies or a tv series.

It's like ok, the FBI guy from Fast and the Furious was also a UPS guy, a sax player in the old MCI commercials, etc, etc.

I understand starting off in commercials but not going back and forth unless you are actually using yor celebrity status.

I watched something on commercials once, as in a history channel episode about commercials. it said that there were really on 7 different kinds of commercials, and depending on what you wanted to sell, you used one within those forms that worked best.

I cant find any information about it, not sure what they were called, but it was interesting to watch.

I found this, which states that there are 12 (http://www.slate.com/id/2170872/), and it seems similar to what I had watched before...

Tiny, I'm funny in person, can I be in a commercial?

I am handsome too, or maybe its sexy... I do not know really, but I'm in shape and not ugly... also white, does that help?
