View Full Version : Chiefs What would you have done today?

40 seconds left, ball at the Washington 5 yard line, 4th down, up by 3.

Would you:

a) attempt the field goal to go up by 6, with the risk of a blocked field goal or a kickoff return for a touchdown?

or

b) run a wide run or other time-consuming play with the hope of either scoring or running off some time and giving the ball to Washington backed up deep in their territory?

should be another option to have someone run it all the way back and around until time runs out

Where is the Bowe shouldn't have stepped out of bounds option, then they could have just ran the clock out.

Easy. Field goal. Make them beat you by a touchdown, PLUS an extra point.

our kickoffs and coverage have been fairly reliable ... kick the field goal and make them go the length of the field needing a touchdown.

Well when you know they're out of time outs and Todd Collins is their QB it's whole lot easier. FG

What?????

Why so pessimistic?

Redskins were out of timeouts, but the clock stops on change of possession, I believe, if the wide run doesn't result in a score. Plus, the danger of a fumble at this point is roughly equal to that of a blocked FG attempt. So, I kick the FG.

When your opponent has basically done nothing on offense all day, besides one long run, you kick the FG.

If they block the FG, it's probably still a long field, and you don't kick it deep so there's not much of a chance that it'll get returned.

There is that probability, yes.

But you should also consider that if, KC didn't pick up the first down, that's a huge momentum changer. And Washington only needs 3 points to force the game into OT.

So you take the 3 points, and kick it off. The KO's coverage have been pretty splendid, and Washington's offense isn't really something to be feared of. Plus, it forces Washington to score a TD + an XP in order for them to win it.

The wildcard was, was Clancy going to play prevent, or is he just going to line it up normally? Thankfully, we didn't have to find out long, due to the safety.

I don't like giving them the ball back with only a FG lead.

The extra 15-20 yards you make Washington go to get a TD instead of a FG versus the extra 5-7 seconds run off by a running play is a win. The concept of this team winning in OT on the road is still hard to grasp, though improving with the play of our MVP kicker.

you can always try to run or throw a touchdown, but if you know you can make it, why not attempt it?

Coach

I should also point out that our kicker has been very good thus far. It's kinda a strange feeling, knowing that you have a very good kicker who can make the kicks (small sample size) that is needed.

Granted, one was blocked (Dallas game), but I think that was more of the poor line protection.

Get the touchdown. If you kick the field goal, you force them to score a touchdown... which against this defense, they usually will. If you score a touchdown, you put it away, and if you miss, their offense will play more conservatively knowing they only need a FG to tie. By going for the TD, you give yourself more of a chance to win either right then or in OT.

But the way they did it was good, too.

FG. Not even Clancy's prevent would have allowed for enough time for the Skins to come alive and go the length of the field for the TD.

I kick the Field Goal. A blocked kick (low probability), as long as they don't return it, is about the same as missing on the TD (probable). Our kick coverage has been very good, so I'll let it ride.

If you miss the TD, they don't have to go nearly as far down the field and bomb a 60 yard soul crushing FG to go to overtime and beat our asses.

Marty kicked the field goal, against the bears in that exact situation. The Bears went the length of the field, and scored to win.

It cost the Chiefs home field that year, and they had to go play the AFC Championship game in Buffalo.

Field goal. Neither team had scored a touchown all game long; so I make em go the length of the field to beat us with a TD and PAT.

Actually, a good play would be to throw the ball to somebody in a way that would have them catch it while spinning. Then, disoriented, they run the wrong way. Opposing players won't chase him because they don't want to tip him off and lose the free points. Then, when he reaches their endzone, he fakes as though he's about to spike the ball, and then comes charging back toward the other end.

This would effectively drain out the clock.

You left off a few options:

1. Dig route to Joe Valerio.
2. Forfeit the game in protest of the "Redskin's" racist name.
3. Ask yourself "WWGD?" ("What would Gaz do?")
4. Forfeit the game in protest of Dan Snyder ripping off Mark Cuban's schtick as the too-involved-kinda-crazy-owner.
5. Forfeit the game in protest of Mark Cuban ripping off Al D@vis' schtick as the too-involved-kinda-crazy-owner.
6. It's doesn't matter: IT'S THE REDSKINS!!!

It is all about making the right call for the situation at hand. We were in a FG battle all day. Our D was doing a good job on Washington's O. Time was running out and Washington was out of time outs. I kick a FG in this situation.
