Eric Smith received a one-game ban and a $50,000 fine for launching himself into Anquan Boldin last year. I think that will be a minimum in this case.

Closest thing I could think of to this was the Haynesworth "stomping" incident which was 5 games. This wasn't that bad, but it was clearly pre-meditated and not really a part of game action. League suspends Dante Wesley for one game
Posted by Mike Florio on October 19, 2009 5:50 PM ET
Eschewing the system of progressive discipline that typically applies to players who violate in-game safety rules, the NFL has suspended Panthers safety Dante Wesley for one game, without pay, based on his blow to the head and neck of Tampa Bay punt returner Clifton Smith during Sunday's game between the two teams.

Wesley left his feet and launched himself at Smith while Smith was waiting to catch a punt.

Wesley was penalized and ejected from the game.

Wrote NFL V.P. of football operations Ray Anderson in a letter to Wesley: "The playing rules (Rule 10, Section 1, Article 1) specifically provide that a member of the kicking team is prohibited from interfering with a receiver attempting to catch an airborne kick. The prohibited contact in this case went well beyond simply interfering with the receiver. Instead, by striking your defenseless opponent in the head and neck area, you committed an unnecessary and unnecessarily dangerous act that is specifically prohibited by the rules. . . .

"Your actions are of particular concern in light of the emphasis that our office has placed on developing and enforcing rules designed to protect players from injury, including head and neck injuries. The safety of our players is paramount to all of us in the NFL."

Wesley will miss Sunday's game against the Bills due to what the league has termed a "flagrant violation" of player safety rules.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The NFL suspended Carolina Panthers special teams player Dante Wesley one game without pay Monday for launching himself into defenseless Tampa Bay returner Clifton Smith.

Wesley left his feet and hit Smith in the neck and head with his forearm and shoulder as Smith waited to field a punt late in the second quarter on Sunday. Smith sustained a concussion and both benches emptied onto the field. Wesley was immediately ejected.

Smith had not signaled for a fair catch and Wesley said he mistimed hitting him. But NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson called the act a flagrant violation of player safety rules.

"The prohibited contact in this case went well beyond simply interfering with the receiver," Anderson wrote in a letter to Wesley. "Instead, by striking your defenseless opponent in the head and neck area, you committed an unnecessary and unnecessarily dangerous act that is specifically prohibited by the rules.

"Your actions are of particular concern in light of the emphasis that our office has placed on developing and enforcing rules designed to protect players from injury, including head and neck injuries. The safety of our players is paramount to all of us in the NFL."

Wesley, who will lose more than $36,000 in salary because of the suspension, has spent seven of his eight NFL seasons with the Panthers. While he's deep down the depth chart at cornerback, Wesley is the gunner on special teams and entered this season ranked 10th in team history with 46 special teams tackles.

"I was just trying to make a play," Wesley said after the game, a 28-21 Carolina victory. "You can check my record. ... I've never really tried to hurt anybody."

Coach John Fox said after watching the film Monday he didn't believe Wesley was trying to injure Smith, who did not return to the game.

"It's not intentional. It's not done maliciously," Fox said. "You've got to make a split-second decision. It's no different than driving to work and putting your brakes on. Sometimes accidents happen."

The Panthers allowed a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown after Wesley's ejection. He'll sit out next Sunday's game against Buffalo.

Wow what a worthless ruling. Does the NFL ever consider precedent when making decisions? They are really started to look stupid as they obviously don't and it's becoming evident there's no rhyme or reason to their decisions. Sometimes they sight a players previous actions, sometimes they don't, sometimes they fine and suspend, sometimes they just suspend or fine. This deserved more than what was given.

10-19-2009, 06:58 PM
For reference here is Eric Smith's hit on Boldin last year that garnered a $50,000 fine and 1 game suspension. Tell me again how Dante Wesley's hit was not 5x worse than this play.

Honestly, it doesn't look to me like he was aiming for the head. It looked to me like he was aiming for the upper chest and just caught a piece of the face mask. I know y'all will beat me up for saying this, but I don't think it was an intentionally dirty hit.

But it looked to me like he hit him with his shoulder primarily, not his helmet.

There was a forearm going too, and maybe that was a problem. But if a Chief was involved on either side, I wouldn't take major issue with it. Maybe I'm missing something on the tape.

Leaving your feet and launching into someone is spearing. Period. Head doesn't have to be used.

Dave Lane

This is new but would apply as well.

According to NFL rules, a new rules state that the initial force of a blindside block can’t be delivered by a helmet, forearm or shoulder to an opponent’s head or neck. An illegal blindside block will bring a 15-yard penalty. Check out the block by Pittsburgh's Hines Ward on Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers and you'll understand what the owners are getting at here.

If that's the case then I will concede the argument, but it sure seems like that happens a lot. This was just more blatant.

amnorix's rule quote makes sense too, I guess, if you assume that Wesley went for the neck and that the rule applies to both blocking and tackling.
