Wilson: Chiefs re-sign Justin Rogers

October 20, 2009, 08:47 PM EST

One day after trading defensive tackle Tank Tyler to the Carolina Panthers, the Kansas City Chiefs used the vacancy on the roster to re-sign linebacker Justin Rogers.

Rogers had been recently cut.

Rogers was drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft by the New England Patriots after playing at SMU.

Cut by the Patriots, he played every game as a rookie with the Dallas Cowboys on special teams.

He was waived-injured by Dallas this year.

At SMU, he recorded 123 tackles, 28 for losses, 19 1/2 sacks, five forced fumbles and one blocked kick.

The Chiefs are going to be three deep at every special teams position soon....

WTF? Why do we sign a linebacker that is a ST guy only with no depth at nose? I'm ok with trading tank but there has to be a guy you have on the radar that can at least come in and be a rotational guy.

Might not sign a backup NT this week with the bye next week. Plus against SD they will play more nickel than base 34 more than likely.

Still it would be nice to see someone like Terrance Taylor or Marlon Favorite signed to the PS.

I'm happy that Pioli is open-minded enough to consider players from his former organization. Refreshing.

Meanwhile, True Fans like JD are worried.

Dorsey or Magee will probably be NT if Edwards goes down.

all the more reason NOT to do it ... developing Dorsey is more important.

I said this in another thread but the Patriots should start charging the Chiefs a finders fee here soon.

I can't see us switching to the 4-3 after trading Tank and slimming Hali and Dorsey down..

Even though Pioli drafted the majority of them?

And this is the true brilliance of Pioli; he discovers the same talent twice.

They've still got the PS position to fill since cutting him lose to bring up Richardson. They must be doing some auditioning we don't hear about. They can always cut him again.

Also the PUPs get activated over the next 3 weeks. Maybe someone gets cut then worth having.

We still have 4 tight ends, right? Surely Cottam gets cut at some point as a part of the Herm/Peterson purge. My hunch is Richardson goes back down to the PS when Kolby gets activated (assuming Albert is good to go). Then we lose a TE and hopefully sign a backup NT for the rest of the season.

We were duped ROFL

There had been stories in the last 48 hours that the Chiefs had re-signed OLB Justin Rogers. But he’s not on the team’s 53-man roster or their practice squad. Right now, there’s no spot for him with either group. -Bob Gretz

There are no available NTs with experience in either the Patriots, Cowboys, or Dolphins franchise. So we'll just stand here and wave.

Linebacker let go

Justin Rogers' tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs didn't last long, according to a league source.

After being signed Tuesday, the veteran linebacker has been placed on waivers.

Rogers is a career special-teamer who previously played for the Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots.

The Chiefs announced this morning that defensive lineman Kenny Smith had taken over the roster vacancy created when they traded defensive tackle Tank Tyler to the Carolina Panthers for a fifth-round draft pick.
