Chargers release declining wideout Chambers

Chargers released WR Chris Chambers.
The move locks in Malcom Floyd as San Diego's starting split end. The writing was on the wall for Chambers throughout the season's first half. Struggling badly to get open, the 31-year-old managed just 122 yards in seven games. He's simply lost his explosiveness, and never had reliable hands. Legedu Naanee now becomes San Diego's clear-cut third receiver. Chambers will probably get another look elsewhere, but his days of being an impact player are long gone. Nov. 2 - 3:01 pm et

Chargers cut Chris Chambers
Posted by Mike Florio on November 2, 2009 3:34 PM ET
A day after the San Diego Chargers inserted receiver Malcom Floyd into the starting lineup in place of veteran Chris Chambers, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers have severed ties with the man they acquired from the Dolphins in 2007 for a second-round draft pick.

Since the trading deadline has passed, Chambers will be required to pass through waivers. Anyone who takes him, however, would be required to pick up the balance of his $4.55 million balance salary. (With nine weeks left, the unpaid amount is $2.4 million.)

On Sunday, Chambers had one catch for 20 yards; Floyd had two for 64.

UPDATE-Filed to ESPN: The Kansas City Chiefs claimed WR Chris Chambers on waivers. So he's staying in the AFC West. per Adam Schefter's Tweet

Malcolm Floyd has been injured every year so far since hes been in the NFL.

8 games, 9 receptions. Lost his job to Malcom Floyd, an undrafted free agent from Wyoming.

They neglect to mention that the 122 yards in 7 games was only on 9 receptions. He averages 14 YPC in his career. Even with only 9 catches this year he's on that target, averaging 13.5... which is better than anyone on the Chiefs right now.

Who knows, it could be that "Kennison effect" we had when we brought Eddie in. Everyone said he was old and washed up and the team turned around offensively as soon as we got him in. Well, wishful thinking but who knows?

Given the $2M pricetag, actually, I doubt anyone picks him up through waivers. If he clears waivers, any team can then sign him for any amount, no? In which case he'll probably latch onto a playoff-bound team for a vet-minimum contract.

So the Chiefs have a realistic shot at him.

I'd definitely bring him in as a stopgap to help protect Bowe.

Benched Chambers helps Chargers

November 1, 2009 6:34 PM

Posted by ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson

SAN DIEGO -- Chris Chambers may have been benched, but he is still finding a way to help his team.

On third down and 10 from their own 8, the Chargers called Chambers’ number and he made a beautiful catch for a first down. He made the play over Oakland star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

The big play sparked San Diego which marched down for a field goal. San Diego now leads Oakland, 24-16, with about four minutes to go.

Chambers was benched this week in favor of Malcolm Floyd.

---He's listed as 5' 11" #210

Even in his "prime", whenever that was, I always saw Chambers as a guy who'd make a few spectacular catches here and there, then disappear/drop easy balls the rest of the time.

This. It's really always been the knack on the guy. The past few years however I'm guessing injuries and age have played a factor in his decline from his prime as well.

I thought he was pretty consistent with the Chargers until recently, but, I don't think he'd put you guys over the top and into the playoffs.
The best he could do is help you win a couple more games and screw up your draft position.
BTW - He was to become a free agent at the end of this season.

I'll take him only in a package deal with Lake Dawson and Chris Penn.

The sad thing is that he's still better than everyone but Bowe. Last I knew we were $16.0+ mil under the cap. Given that he's already received 7 paychecks from San Diego, we'd get him for no signing bonus and he'd costs us $1.26 mil for the remaining 9 games. We can easily afford him and we need him.
Bowe had 109 yards in his best game and that was 35 yards better than any other game this season. We need all the help we can get.

Chambers: "Ya know, Coach, I'm old and slow, so I can't be runnin' no deep routes."

Haley: "That's okay, Chris, we only need you to go three yards and turn around, 'cause by then Matt's getting killed anyway. The O-line wouldn't give him enough time to let you get that deep."

Weren't the Chiefs poised to draft Chambers before Miami "snapped" him before our turn? I'm pretty sure that was the case and CP had the hots for him when he was coming up from college.
