UPDATE 11:42 Lawmen checking building floor by floor

Published: Tuesday, November 10, 2009 11:48 AM CST

Law enforcement agencies say they have not been able to confirm they have a hostage situation today at the Governors Office Building.

Capt. Mike Smith of the Jefferson City Police Department briefed members of the media about 11:30 a.m. that a call came in after 10 a.m. today, saying an automated alarm in the building indicated a hostage situation was under way on the fifth floor of the building.

Smith said authorities have checked with people who work on the fifth floor and other floors and that no problems have been reported. Smith emphasized no shots have been fired at the site and no one is hurt.

The Missouri Public Service Commission has offices on the fifth floor, but it’s not known if their offices were involved.

SWAT and tactical squads are on site, Smith said. They will be going through the building floor by floor to check the identification of those they find in the offices. Smith said it would take some time to clear the building.

The building, located at Madison Street and East Capital Avenue, originally was the Governor Hotel and was renovated by the state about 10 years ago.

Authorities are asking those in buildings around the office building to stay in their buildings and off the streets as authorities clear the building.

Smith was asked if Gov. Jay Nixon was at the Governor’s Mansion, which is located across the street from the office building.

He is out of town, Smith said.

Because everyone knows a legitimate news source ceases to be legitimate when they utilize newer technologies to communicate?

You refusing to let a hooker get out of your car does not constitute a "hostage situation".

i love the fact the division of this country down the party lines works so well. the left is real quick to blame the right, and the right shoots right back at the left. why don't you people understand that there are whackjobs on both sides of the isle? and furthermore, why don't any of you understand that neither party gives two shits about you? if you are not a corporation or in the top 5% moneywise, all you are is a vote to them, and they will tell you whatever you want to hear to get it. guys like olberman and beck are only in it for ratings, and will spew whatever garbage they need to get them.

Why would anyone want to hold anyone in Jeff City Hostage for any reason?

KansasCity.com ran this story this morning and the report was something like:

"We're here at the building with the potential hostage situation and there are a few police cars around. We (the media) are allowed to walk where we want, which is highly unusual. We can see a worker in the building standing in a window sipping coffee"

I quit caring after reading that. It was about 9 am.

I was in Jefferson City when this was going on. I had some business to do 2 blocks away from where this was going on. It was kind of weird seeing all the police cars and a helicopter flying over head. Of course it was just a hoax.
