I saw that picture... looks like a badass kilo. Was he in his M1 or a hummer (if so I be he wishes he was in the tank) at the time? Either way, give him my thanks... this country owes him their gratitude.

Currently a 68T, former 88M. Just being in the Army has brought me to Georgia, Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, Washington, Germany, Austria and Italy so far. I feel I've been rewarded pretty handsomely for signing the dotted line for such a low key MOS.

I haven't deployed and kinda feel that Veterans Day should be aimed more towards the fellas that have been in the shit. IMHO.

Cheers to all!

True. But the fact that you face that same possibility deserves thanks as well. I doubt that you have not made any sacrifices in service to your country... so, shut up and take the thanks, you have earned it. :D

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy the thanks, and free stuff.

It is just weird to be in the airport and to have a family walk up to me and shake my hand and thank me for all I do and "all I do" is take care of animals while living in a vacation country. It is neither here nor there but just a feeling I have.

For my Veterans Day present- Please don't respond to this post. I'm not trying to hijack this thread.

I wish i could of serve damn this cerbal palsey making me a useless piece of shit no want to be with or talk to. God bless all you guys who served.

Like everyone else said don't sale your self short. My wife has a head injury had to relearn to walk and talk missing memories...etc after a bad accident in college lot of broken bones and such, Crohn's disease and Fibromyalgia. She has been told several times to file for disability she is still fighting back and working so keep up the good fight. She works with special needs adults who cannot take care of themselves. I have met quite a few of them and I could not do it on a daily basis.

That job was a glorified grease monkey job, I knew quite a few while I in. Never thought would hear that "AGE mechanic" again.

Congrats!

Sorry so late in, my company was just awarded a new contract after an 18 month bid process and I am up to my ass in alligators. In a good way.

My heartfelt thanks and respect to all vets here as well as current service members.

If we wish to be free, if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending, if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained _ we must fight!" I want to give my thoughts and prayers to 2 of my friends who died in the first Gulf War in 1991. I served with both at Ft. Stewart GA in the 24th Infantry Division 89-91'.

Marty Davis and Andy Alaniz. Marty was from Salina KS, and Andy was from Corpus Christi TX. Ironically about a year before the Gulf War, Marty's mom moved to Corpus Christi from Salina and became friends with Andy's mom.

I knew Marty well as I met him at the MEPS station in KC and we both shared out first plane ride sitting next to each other talking on the way to Ft Benning for basic. We ended up in the same platoon in basic and he was in the bunk next to mine and I was his battle buddy through basic and AIT as well as going to Ft Stewart with him. He always got in trouble in basic because the Drill Sgts would crack him up and he would start laughing. He would get to laughing and so I would start to laugh and then we would end up doing push ups until we were almost dead. Got me into shape quick.

Marty was 19 and Andy was 20. Though their life was cut way short, they both loved being infantrymen and died doing something they believed in.

The true heroes are the ones that aren't around to get talk about it.

RIP.

Back at Offutt now, AF trained computer dude still serving as a contractor.

Still not straying too far from good ol' Clearmont, Missouri!

Thanks to all others who served too.

Was a nice day. Day off work, went hunting, Veterans Day program, freebee meal at Applebees with my beautiful wife.

I've been a lurker for years, but this thread caused me to sign on. Unbelievable amount of vets here, thanks to all for your service. Skip Towne, I recently spent 5 1/2 years in Korea. If you haven't been there lately, your service at that time made the difference in developing a modern, developed country with great people. Never doubt your service; it was special and something to be proud of and the US/ROK alliance thanks you. Go back someday to experience your difference.

Were these guys from 3/15 INF? I was at Stewart for four years, and IIRC, there was a nice memorial to a couple young grunts from 3/15 killed in Gulf War. RIP to your pals.

It was, but I reckon all combat situations are no better than others.

Saving grace was that I pulled 5 R&Rs (I&Is as we liked to call them) in the 18 months I spent there. Four of them were to Hong Kong where the war wasn't as visible. I wonder how it would have been without those 5 day respites.

Which begs the question; did you Desert Storm/Iraqi/Afgan vets get any out of country R&R? I have never thought of that until now.

I got a weekend on a dry-docked cruise ship in Bahrain. The most memorable experience of that trip was the hot showers.

LOL - I know(as evident by the planned attack a few years ago), I just try to be more of a rule follower instead of a breaker.

New rumor is we'll be at a pretty cush location which will mean plenty of internet access I hope, so no prob with even coming on here. If that's the case anyway...

They did the R&R to Bahrain starting with the lower enlisted and working their way up. The weekend I was supposed to go . . . that's the weekend the air war started. (sassenfrassen rassenfrassen).

Oh, the joys of being a Senior NCO.

Was that one weekend per tour? Doesn't seem right. What would have been the issue of allowing enlisted to R&R somewhere in Europe.

During that Vietnam fracas, married men were allowed trips to Hawaii for a week with their wives. I don't recall any preferences give to rank. I was an E6, Boat Captain and often Patrol Officer and I got as many trips out as the E2s on my boat.

There were several reasons behind this as far as I could tell.

a) limited facilities nearby. Bahrain was the only legal place to drink in the Saudi AO. And with eight(?) divisions of US soldiers, not counting the Marines, AF, Navy and Allies (French Foriegn Legion, British, Italian AF), they could only support X number at any one time.

b) No one was quite sure when Desert Shield would end and Desert Storm would start, so we couldn't release people to go to Europe/U.S. for leave.

c) Desert Shield was all about the build-up for war if the Iraqis didn't voluntarily leave Kuwait. When I first arrived in country in Sep 90, we didn't know if the Iraqi tanks were coming over the border into Saudi or not. The 82nd and the 101st were the first two divisions in country and both are light inf. It was only after five months there that we even started weekend passes to Bahrain.

Course, 100 hours after the ground war started, it was all over. Well, the shooting anyway. I spent 27 days sitting at As Salman AF, Iraq waiting for someone to say we could go south. Only people we saw the whole time I was in Iraq was a bunch of Bedouins who drove their goat herd through our position. (Traded them two cases of MRE's and a case of 7up for 3 goats. Good eats, let me tell you.)

Everyone doing a year-long tour gets 15 days. And you can go pretty much wherever you want. I've known guys who went to Australia and Thailand.

It's a pretty smooth running system, and now they allow you three days travel on either end. That way you aren't eating into your 15 while some plane is broken on a runway somewhere. Wasn't always as smooth as it runs now.

Back when they were doing 15-month tours, guys got 18 days.

I don't think I ever saw a Chap hit a drone.

...

In 1995 I hit a 6ft drone plane with an M-60 on a live fire range in ft Riley, if you were talking about those kinds of drones. I got lucky- won't lie about that. Still it was pretty cool to see it go down and hear the rest of the company cheering behind me.
