Suppose that, instead of drafting a stud safety, we went with a corner who turned out to be a stud.

I know a stud's a stud, but which would you prefer for this team, a stud safety such as Ed Reed, or a stud cornerback such as Champ Bailey?

Corner is generally tied to one side of the field. Sure he can shut down one receiver, but you can throw away from him. Also, there are situations where you can't even play man coverage (running QBs) and the value of a cover corner is negated. Also, if you have a very good WR, you can't even count on the corner to shut him down. Current offenses and rules also diminish the value of a physical corner compared to 15 or 20 years ago.

A good free safety can play all over the field. He can support the run, blitz the QB, provide coverage, play center field. The offense can't easily remove a stud FS from the defensive game plan. For a corner, you just don't throw to his man.

If I had to chose between the 2 options, I would rather have a safety, since I think that CB is a semi strong point of our team.

A dominant safety would help them out even more.

If I had a choice at any position, O-Line would be #1 in my book.

I think a solid man coverage corner is about like finding gold. Just doesn't happen much anymore.

Take it in a heartbeat...

i have to agree safety is the way to go. basically for all the reasons stated by cdcox.
