View Full Version : Home and Auto What defines an "Upscale Sedan"?

There appears to be more gray-area with market branding in the automotive industry. Several years ago, you can easily classify a car such as compact, mid-sized, luxury....

But what is an upscale sedan? I found this line interesting in this article: "Hyundai is also a spoiler with the Genesis, which beat out entries from BMW, Lexus and Infiniti to win Best Upscale Midsize Car for the Money."
http://autos.yahoo.com/articles/autos_content_landing_pages/1210/best-and-worst-cars-for-the-money-2010/

Can a manufacturer simply market their car as upscale by slapping some leather, faux wood, and electronic gadgets on it? So if you bought a 6cyl Honda Accord and added the "luxury options", which add leather, faux wood, etc., would it be an "upscale sedan"?

I can answer this. The only thing that defines it is the price. If you are dropping 35k plus on a sedan then its upcale

Funny you should say that. My Jeep came without an ash tray or cigarette lighter. It's kind of annoying not having that extra spot to cram junk.

That's a good answer, especially since name-brand isn't the identifier so much anymore (e.g. Hyundai Genesis)... so where does "Luxury" come in? At 50k?

Maybe "Upscale Sedan" replaced the term "Entry-level Luxury".

Who cares what you call it???

Buy a car that gives you what you want for the money. I don't know why you'd care about a lack of well-defined categories.

Because I find the automotive industry's "marketing" to be interesting, and sometimes pure genius.

Sorry that my curiosity offends you.
