Possible top ten on originality alone.

Other candidates for the top ten:

Ben Folds - Landed
Tom Petty - Running Down a Dream
Aerosmith - Walk This Way (or whatever the title is)
Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell
Styx - Come Sail Away

Probably lots more that I'm not thinking of.

Yeah I was waiting for the "Your tastes in metal suck hairy balls" type of retort coming.
Its not like you guys picked bad songs or anything. You picked great ones (well, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" isn't a great song, merely a good one). The word is greatest though.

I've got some ideas. This Land is Your Land by Woody Guthrie is a fantastic song. What Guthrie did was explosive. This machine kills fascists -- And so does the song, in 1940 and still today, where it's sang in elementary schools, but can still be appreciated by adults. Most definitely needs to be mentioned.

A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. This song combines historical pain and future hope in such an extraordinary, passionate, yet never overdone way. It mixes natural metaphors almost as well as McCartney's Blackbird, but it strikes the soul with much more vigor, due to Cooke's vocal power.

There are a number of great Neil Young songs that need to be mentioned. After the Goldrush, The Needle and the Damage Done, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, and Comes a Time are deserving of a spot. If pressed, I'd have to say Comes a Time is my favorite Young song.

God Only Knows by the Beach Boys is great, especially in how unique and honest it is. Starting a love song by saying "I may not always love you"? Acknowledging that relationships are deeper than physical sexual gratification is bold and welcomed. And the harmony of the Beach Boys excels here more than anywhere else - and that's saying something.

Getting to Billy Joel, he's a monumental figure in music and one of my favorites. Vienna, Lullaby, Allentown, and New York State of Mind are some of my favorites. And his popular romantic songs (Just the Way You Are) are second to none.

Now on to the greatest: Bob Dylan. I've never been attached to an artist like I was (and still am to some degree) to Bob Dylan. An easy choice of greatest song is Like a Rolling Stone. It's pure iconic rock. And he also has pure iconic folk with Blowin' in the Wind and The Times They are a Changing.

Some Dylan fans might have their favorites as the hidden, often forgotten about gems. That's not entirely my case, up to a point. I love Desolation Row, I Want You, Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands, Simple Twist of Fate, and Shelter from the Storm -- all pretty much hits.

But my absolute, without a doubt, favorite Dylan song is a little more obscure.

It comes from the same album ("Blood on the Tracks") as those last two songs. It actually comes at the end. I haven't heard or experienced a greater album being put together. It's all put together around his broken marriage. There's the exciting, optimistic start with Tangled Up in Blue, then it moves to an angrier Bob lamenting on her leaving (You're a Big Girl Now to Idiot Wind), and then it goes to some half denial stage where he's just thinking about how hard it will be and longs for her (You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go), then goes to a reflecting stage with If You See Her, Say Hello and Shelter from the Storm. And then it ends with my favorite:

Buckets of Rain.

Here he is at his most sorrowful. He's also at near acceptance in this grieving process. It's completely enlightened from the mixture of sadness and gladness. Sad because she's gone, but glad that he knew her and she was a big part of his life.

Like your smile
And your fingertips
Like the way that you move your hips.
I like the cool way you look at me.
Everything about you is bringing me
Misery.

....

Life is sad
Life is a bust
All ya can do is do what you must.
You do what you must do and ya do it well,
I'll do it for you, honey baby,
Can't you tell?

Other songs I'll never get tired of listening to: Sister Golden Hair - America, Maggie May - Rod Stewart, Who Are You? - The Who

But Greatest Song Ever? Buckets of Rain - Bob Dylan. Alone it's beautiful. Together with the rest of "Blood on the Tracks" it is a masterpiece, a perfect end to the near perfect ride of an album.
