View Full Version : Life Possibly moving to Georgia in the near future. Cost of living change?

So, it isn't set in stone right now but it looks as though I may be moving to Macon, Georgia in a year or a year and a half. Would this be a big change in cost of living? I live in Kansas City right now. How long before I have to change my plates by moving states and associated BS like that?

It's be awhile since I have been in the area but cost of living should be slightly less. As far as tags go. I think it is fairly standard in every state you have 30 days to change. Having said that. I'd just wait till whatever tag you have at that time to expire. Then go to the tag office and pay a pro-rated year of ad valorem.

Don't do it. Moved south once for a job. Lasted with those retards for a year. The stereotypes are true. And you think its humid here sometimes?

It's about an hour or so south of Atlanta.. I have family there, nice area. I don't know the answers to your questions though. I don't know what Pioli's problem is with stereotypes or what he's referring to at all though.

Cost of living in Macon would be similar or less than KC. Probably a lot less if you lived in one of the small surrounding towns and commuted 15-20 minutes into Macon. (my advice; move to the East/Southeast of Macon, as the further away from Atlanta the better) If you dig the country, you could live pretty rural and still only drive 15 minutes or so. Oh, and I have to agree with PZ, lots of the people there make KC like a city full of geniuses. And nothing worse that a smoking hot chick who opens her mouth and talks with a full blown southern accent... yuk Just something about it.... boner killer.

Weird... I guess I'm a fan of the south and don't notice these things as being horrible. Especially, the part about the good lookin' girls with the southern accents.

Anytime you get to the south and you go more rural than suburb or city, you will find lots of people that make you think "Hmmm, so you are why the stereotype exists". But, it happens every where... every town in every state has this with the demographic.

Like someone else said, it's usually 30 days to change tags. One FYI- I don't know if you're going from KS or MO, but if you paid your car registration tax in KS for this year and register your car in another state there's a form you can fill out to send back to KS and get a pro-rated portion of your tax refunded. I think you need to mail your plates, too.

Thanks for the info folks. I am in MO.

I am trying to think of other paperworky type stuff like tags I would need to get taken care of.

Should be interesting. I am actually going there for a girl. She will be going to school down there. The closest experience I have with the south other than visiting a lot of places for a short time is time spent with family that live in Tupelo, MS.

I am always up for new and interesting places.

Don't listen to the mouth breathers around here. The South is awesome.

I really am excited to live somewhere new and interesting. A change of venue should be good for my photography.

It is nice...my profession allows a lot of freedom.

It doesn't sound like the town is doing too well in this economy. How stable is this job?

I moved to Atlanta 12 years ago. We have enjoyed it. I miss my friends and the Chiefs.... but other than that.....

Yeah, can't think of anything.

People are certainly more conservative in the South, but other than that, I don't see much of a difference.

I lived in South Georgia close to the Florida line for 5 years. Managed a farm that was 20 miles out in the sticks. Beautiful, beautiful country. Plantations, pine trees as far as you could see. The humidity was rough but I was 20 at the time and enjoyed sweating. The people of the South are very different I do have to say. Attitudes sucked and a white man in south Georgia would leave there with plenty of reason for predujice.

kind of like that guy on the Playboy channel that walks down the streets of big cities and asks every hot chick if he can take pictures of them naked until one says yes.

Taking naked photos of hot chicks isnt't as fun as it sounds, it is really hard to do well...and the girls go bathshit crazy about every little detail. Glad I did it for wide ranging experience. I like to take on all kinds of photography but I would only do it paid going forward.

I live 20 minutes south of macon in Warner robins. ufortinately, macon has turned into a crime ridden city, which is pretty bad right now. I would go to north or south macon if I were you.

I'm pretty sure the airport stretches the full length of the state.

It takes like 12 hours to get your $#it and get out of there...

Atlanta's great... lived downtown for a few months last Spring. As far as photography, I probably could have spent a few weeks just wandering around the downtown area with Centennial Park, the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coke, Georgia Dome, etc; there's a lot to see and do.

Glad I didn't have to drive and put up with the traffic, but when there's open road, it's pretty insane and can be kind of fun in a you-can-die-at-any-time sort of way... I remember having cars tailing me between Atlanta and Macon several years back because I was passing someone going about 85 and apparently that wasn't fast enough for those behind me.

The CNN Center is right there, too, but I was told the tour is pretty boring unless you're really into that sort of thing.
