View Full Version : Chiefs Are you glad that the Chiefs have dropped to the 5th pick in the draft?

I am. PBJ

It'll be harder to "reach" and draft a player too high. It'll be easier to trade down.

I'm ALWAYS an advocate of trading down. It seems to me that you get better results with more players drafted slightly lower than less players drafted higher. Maybe I'm wrong. But, this team has many holes to fill.

We couldn't trade down last year. Is there some magical top-5 talent that we can pass on but no one else can that's expecting to be sitting there?

You get more benefit by making the right selections than you do by trading down.

I know I am. That 1-3 position pays too high and is almost impossible to trade out of.

Not really...I was hoping we would draft our future RT at #3 instead of #5

I would never trade the embarrassing on so many levels thumping we put on Dinveer for a draft spot.

No Sir.

You get more benefit by making the right selections than you do by trading down. EVERY team thinks they made the right selection with their 1st round pick. I think you have a better chance of helping your team with the 10th and 23rd picks, than with the 5th pick. Not in every case, but in most cases. Hindsight is 20/20. But, I'm almost always interested in trading down.

Eh, I'd rather be at #3, for the shot at Berry.

Plus, it would be nice to have that spot two spots higher in every round. Picking at #3 instead of #5 does have benefits past the first round too...

That said, glad we beat the Broncos yesterday, as I think building confidence and winning some games is very important at this point.

This. God that was beautiful. The other games we won felt more like cripple fights than anything else. This was DOMINATION against our most hated rival in their house that cemented their non-playoff doom. Awesome.

Yep. I'd never take anything away from beating the Cheating Donx soundly in their place and knocking them out of any chance of the playoffs in the process. Plus, the # 5 is easier to trade out of if that becomes a realistic option.

I'm glad we won yesterday and if that means dropping from #3 to #5 in the draft order, so be it. We have a better chance of trading down at #5 than #3. In fact, I think last year's #5 was traded by Cleveland to NY Jets so the Jets could select Mark Sanchez.

Winning ... cost us a spot or two $$
Thumping the donks at home AND smashing any playoff dreams .............. priceless $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

It's not like there is any guarantee of success with the #3 pick, and if Pioli is worth a crap (?) he should get us a solid starter with the #5.

I'll take the W at the donx place, thank you very much.

Donkey defeat and humiliation trumps draft pick position every time. Besides, picking in the top 5 three years in a row is getting old...maybe we'll trade out. I honestly don't give a shit right now. I'm still lovin' the beat down...

We're going to miss Berry. He isn't going to be there at 5. The Chiefs are the only team that can wind up losing by winning.

Heh, I think there's a lot of that going around.

That was a therapeutic win for the fans, I believe. Not just that they won, but that they flat kicked their asses in the 2nd half. It felt good to watch that game.

there isn't as many slam dunks in the 1-5 spot that there has been in earlier era's. The Spread, Workout warriors who can't play football, headcases, and bad ace running backs found all over college football at all levels

It may bail them out of a tough decision: at 2 or 3 Suh may very well still be on the board.

I seriously doubt he'll be there at 5.

Winning is almost always better then having a better draft spot.

The Exception: All-World Quarterback coming out of College.

LMAO @ people that think Berry will be gone. When was the last time a safety was taken before the 5th pick? 1991?

DaWolf
01-04-2010, 12:57 PM
We'll see how it all boils down. The combine and pro days are bound to shoot some guys up or down the board.

If the guy we want is at 5, then great. If we can trade down and get some more guys, great.

But if we miss on our guy, or if a team trades ahead of us to take our guy, then it becomes an issue drafting lower.

I don't really care, we just have to take advantage of the pick. The real good teams, they pick in the 20's or 30's and still take advantage of their picks. Our new scouts better be on target this year...

While I do like Berry and Suh, I think this years draft class is very sub-par.

Yep.

Plus with the way the draft is now with rookie contracts, it hurts more than it helps to have the top 3 pick... Too much $$.

Hopefully they'll get that worked out in the next collective bargaining agreement.

I agree, the history shows safety before the 5 spot in the draft nearly never happens.

5th isn't so bad.Of all the players that are drafted,if we can't find a good one in the top 5,we shouldn't be drafting at all. It's gonna change so much between now and April, theres no telling what the top 10 will look like by then.

Ok the theory that it's harder to reach is flawed, this very team reached on picks at the end of the first round numerous times and in the 2nd round for a decade, you can reach at any point.

I think it's easier to trade out of 5 than it is 3, and as much as I might want Barry, Suh is really the only player projected in the top half of the round that I'd be upset about missing if he was available (and he won't be...). So what I'd really like to see is them dropping down and getting as many 1s/2s/3s as they possibly can.

(But I don't expect that will happen).

Either way, while I don't know that I'd say I'm glad, I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing.

And I also think yesterday's win could conceivably be more valuable than the difference in draft position. If they're able to use it as some kind of launching pad into 2010.

01-04-2010, 04:36 PM
I think we've been prone to reach. I would like for them to do some free agency stuff in the offseason with some proven players. I don't mind the 5th spot.

I can wrap my head around the love for embarassing the Donks, but I can't reconcile it with the mantra that all that matters is SB wins. Seems like the only thing we should be analyzing is if the game yesterday and the change in draft position got us closer the the SB. All else is the cardinal sin of wallowing in mediocrity.

I posted this in another thread about the BUZZ draft order but it was on the 10th page. This is interesting enough info that I will post it here also...

The Chiefs draft 5th in the first round but actually draft in the 4th position in rounds 2 through 4. Washington lost their 3rd round pick in the supplemental draft for DE Jeremy Jarmon from Kentucky.

We go back to the 5th slot in the 5th round.

http://walterfootball.com/nfldraftorder2010.php

Round 1
1. St. Louis (1-15)
2. Detroit (2-14)
3. Tampa Bay (3-13)
4. Washington (4-12)
5. Kansas City (4-12)

Round 2
1. St. Louis (1-15)
2. Detroit (2-14)
3. Tampa Bay (3-13)
4. Kansas City (4-12)
5. Washington (4-12)
18. Kansas City - from Atlanta Tony Gonzalez trade (9-7)

Round 3
1. St. Louis (1-15)
2. Detroit (2-14)
3. Tampa Bay (3-13)
4. Kansas City (4-12) Washington used its 3rd-rounder in the Supplemental Draft

Round 4
1. St. Louis (1-15)
2. Detroit (2-14)
3. Tampa Bay (3-13)
4. Kansas City (4-12)
5. Washington (4-12)

Round 5
1. St. Louis (1-15)
2. Detroit (2-14)
3. Cleveland - from Tampa Bay (3-13)
4. Washington (4-12)
5. Kansas City (4-12)
6. Cleveland (5-11)
7. Oakland (5-11)
8. Seattle (5-11)
9. Buffalo (6-10)
10. Chicago^ (7-9)
11. Kansas City - from Miami (7-9) Chiefs-Dolphins: Tyler Thigpen
12. Jacksonville^ (7-9)
13. Kansas City - from Carolina^ (8-8) Chiefs-Panthers: Tank Tyler

Walter’s also has KC drafting in the 6th round but I thought we gave that up for the offensive linemen from Miami.. We gave up our 7th round pick for the rights to draft O’Connell.
