View Full Version : Football CRIBBS: "I don't think I'm on Holmgren's 'to-do' list"

Mike Holmgren is rather busy this Tuesday.

He wasn't too busy, however, to speak with Josh Cribbs' agent about a new contract. And Cribbs doesn't like what he heard.

Agent J.R. Rickert told Fox's Alex Marvez that Cribbs was offered a "take-it-or-leave-it" multiyear extension that averaged only $1.4 million-per-season, with potential to reach $2 million.

Holmgren spoke about Cribbs Tuesday: "I believe players should be rewarded for what they do."

Holmgren also pointed out that Cribbs has three years left on his existing contract, which makes a new deal almost unprecedented.

Cribbs is a passionate player, so it's not surprising to see that he was emotional on Twitter Wednesday.

"Thanks everyone, I love playing for the browns & put my all in to it, but it doesn't look good 4me at this point on returning," Cribbs wrote. "I don't believe I made the to do list for the team in 2010."

2010 is only six days old, so there is no motivation for Holmgren to rush into a deal. Heck, he doesn't even have a G.M. or coach yet. (Well, he has a coach. But not his coach.)

No matter what happens in January between the two sides, there is plenty of time left before training camp to pay the man.

MAKE THIS SHIT HAPPEN SCOTT.
**** my left eye. That would be dirrrty. Won't happen. But can you imagine how icky we would be with Cribbs and Charles? (and possibly Spiller if the situation arises?) It will be like watching a team of hockey pucks in Chiefs uniforms. They will have to add the blur streak so we can keep track of where they are on the field.

Do we really want to spend that much of our limited FA money (due to CBA) on special teamer?

I agree on not spending the money on him. Look at Hester now, not a real good reciever and his return electricity is not what it used to be. This dude would be another guy without a position on the Chiefs IMO.

Not just special teams. Jesus crizzy. As a wideout. Cribbs, Charles, Bowe, Chambers.... maybe Cottam steps up. Maybe Cassel blows less.

No shit. People talk out of one side and say how cheap Clark is.... and then when we clearly have MORE than enough money to spend on FA's, almost under the basement low, they talk out of the other side and act frugal, as if it is their money.

Who gives a fuck? Make it rain on Cribbs and bring him in. I give no fuck. It makes us much better. DOOO it.

I don't see how he'd be able to crack our talent-laden rosters.

That is funny enough, I give you that. The roster is not solid enough to be trying to get just a specialist for fairly high $$$'s. Look at his WR stats on a crappy team over his career. Charles is now Barry Sanders, Cribbs is Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice rolled into one, and Derrick Johnson is so fucking good nobody even compares. All because they rocked the house in meaningless late season Chiefs games...lmao

You're wrong.

That rule will only apply to the best 8 (IIRC) teams in the league, and wouldn't even start until 2011.

A good kick/punt returner can increase your ball position on the field DRAMATICALLY. They can make 80 yard drives 75, 70, 60, even 40 sometimes. Its not the TDs, its the ones where they get up to the 40 before knocked out. Its the extra three yards on a punt return that went nowhere.

You have to pretty much jism in your pants about getting a guy like this, when you know how many fewer yards he'll let your offense have to make.

Agent: Browns low-balling Cribbs

By James Walker
ESPN.com

As new team president Mike Holmgren takes over the Cleveland Browns this week, one of his first orders of business is getting off to a very rocky start.

Peter Schaffer, the agent for Pro Bowler Joshua Cribbs, says the Browns are "insulting" his client with low-ball offers. Cribbs made a base salary of $900,000 this past season, and Cleveland offered to raise his annual salary to $1.4 million over the final three years of his contract, Schaffer said.

Cribbs, who is Cleveland's most popular player, is coming off the most productive season of his career. He returned three kickoffs and one punt for touchdowns, rushed for 381 yards, and caught 20 receptions for the Browns (5-11), who finished the season on a four-game winning streak.

On Wednesday, Cribbs also was awarded Special Teams Player of the Month by the NFL.

"Not only is it insulting, but it's illogical," Schaffer said of Cleveland's offer. "There is no way to objectively justify it."

This has been an ongoing saga between Cribbs and the Browns.

Over the past three years, Schaffer said Cribbs was promised a fair deal by multiple power players in Cleveland, including owner Randy Lerner.

A regime change put an end to negotiations last season, but Schaffer said Holmgren taking over as president should not provide another holdup.

"It doesn't matter, because Josh is the same player whether the president is George W. Bush, Barack Obama, or John McCain," Schaffer said. "I'm not worried about that."

Holmgren met with the Cleveland media Tuesday and was asked about Cribbs' contract situation.

"We've been in contact with his representatives even when I was in Arizona," Holmgren said. "I believe players should be rewarded for what they do. I have no problems with that at all. What happens though on occasion is our view of how much that should be and the agent's view of how much that should be differs. We have made an effort."

There is always potential to get better. But as it currently stands, Cribbs' camp feels the player did all he could this past season and that loyalty is not being returned.

Schaffer added there is no chance of Cribbs playing for the Browns under the current contract.

"They like to say Cribbs has three years left on the contract, but I can assure them they have no years left on the contract," Schaffer said sternly. "Either this gets resolved by the first day of the league year, or he will never show up for the Browns again and will immediately demand a trade."

"It's not what he wants. Josh wants to be a Brown for life, but love requires a two-way street."

James Walker covers the AFC North for ESPN.com.

Do you remember Dante Hall? Remember the anticipation when an opposing team would kick to him?

He was a gamechanger, and had the potential to go all the way, every single time, and DID on several occasions.

The momentum swings ALONE would be worth the cakn patna.
