We should create a new term. When a woman's really social and out there networking, they say "social butterfly"...I don't think I could--much less get away with--calling myself a butterfly of any kind. Could you honestly call yourself a butterfly? No? So come on, think!

The new one's not for women, it's for men to call themselves and each other. As social as you are, Phil, I don't want to call you a butterfly.

Some sort of pack animal that likes to stay together. How about a social lioness? Or a social coyote... or a social buffalo...yeah

I'm pretty sure that butterflies are multi-gendered so I don't know why you'd have a problem with the term. There are boy and girl wolverines, grizzly bears and sharks. No different than a butterfly. Or is it that a butterfly just isn't an image that's macho enough for a hard ass uber-mensch like yourself?

I just realized we're coming up with a term for male butterflies... So lioness is probably out.

I think the logical choice here is social caterpillars.

For the record, witty labels aren't committee creations, generally. They just happen. Then the stick. You can't force it. Carry on.

If you throw enough shit on a wall, something will stick sooner or later...lol But you don't get to choose what piece.

Witty label rape scenario.

That's what the monkey next to the title is attempting.

Are you trying to get at butterflies have two genders or two sexes? Yes, there are naturally two sexes for butterflies: male, female. Genders, though? Neither of us would really be able to prove anything concretely, but I haven't seen a single butterfly behaving on the masculine side of the spectrum. They all land pretty gently on each flower, and I've never seen a butterfly get aggressive and go around like "Yeah! It's time to get some of this!" while pounding into the center of a daisy.

And yes, I would like a slightly more hardass Superman kind of image. Thank you for caring enough to ask.

The problem here is that no self-respecting man initiates the behavior necessary to be a social butterfly, so the term does not apply to males.

We have our own terms that apply only to men. "Recluse backwoods hermit", for example. That's a guy thing. "Homocidal maniac". That one could conceivably be switched to "homocidal womaniac", but there's a reason that term doesn't exist.

So this is a theoretical question at best. But if forced to come up with a term, I would go with "social moth". It's like a social butterfly, but without the bright clothing.
