Popular dude,

Redskins made a run at Romeo

Posted by Mike Florio on January 12, 2010 6:30 PM ET

Though former Browns coach and former Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is expected to join the Chiefs, another team with an American Indian nickname made a run at Romeo.

We're told the Redskins tried to land Crennel, an expert in the 3-4 defense that new coach Mike Shanahan is hoping to install.

The Redskins had been targeting Mike Zimmer, who has decided to stay with the Bengals. Former Saints coach Jim Haslett is now the front-runner.

I don't think its a failure if we go 7-9. Maybe not happening as quickly as we thought, but not fail.

Plus, what if the schemes are great but Cassel can't throw them? Does the Patriots experiment fail or just the Cassel experiment?

Miserable like us? Hell no. That team was already loaded with defensive talent. Revis has been good pretty much since the day he was drafted and they grabbed Bart Scott in the offseason. That was not a team devoid of talent. And besides, defense is mostly about attitude up front but we do needs some linebackers. The Jets have THAT.

Actually, there was a pretty good reservoir of talent there, he just brought some much needed focus, attitude, and swagger to the mix.

We talk about and hear a lot about "winning culture" from our GM in KC, and we also hear him say that the Head Coach is the focal-point of the responsibility of that endeavor.

The day that Haley steps to the podium and does not have that look of the weight of the world upon his shoulders, is the day when he will have finally grown in to his own skin with the job.

YEAH!!! Losing is a cancer, and is why Detroit has lost for so many years. When you play on a poor level for so long, you start going into the game expecting to lose. You usually have to overhaul the complete system in order to get that attitude out of there. Last year we did okay, and ending last year on such a dominant note was BY FAR one of the best things we could have done, cause now the team will walk around in the offseason with their dicks hanging a little lower than before.

Putting Weis and Crennel in there is completing the steps to revitalize this team. At a certain point it doesn't even matter if the new guy is better or worse, just as long as he's different.

Were Pats defenses ever dominant under Crennel? In 2001 (his first year) they were 24th in yards (actually one behind grob's first year in KC) and 6th in points (yeah, ah, let's not discuss our scoring d then).

2002 they were 23rd in yards, 17th in points

2003 they were 7th in yards, 1st in points

2004 they were 9th in yards, 2nd in points

As I recall he took the Browns job in 2005, and their D (meaning the Patriots) was generally considered one of the elites by that point. I've slept a lot since then, but my recollection was that they were hard to run on, ran crazy blitzes against the pass. But Belichick was usually talked about as the mastermind.

Do you disagree? If you do I suggest you watch the fourth quarter of a Lions game. They give up on themselves, and its because they're so used to losing they think they're supposed to. They have no confidence or swagger, something I think the Denver win gave us heading into the offseason.

Yes, "changing the culture" is a bunch of horse shit and is something that teams with limited talent talk about. Well, that and weight loss.

Detroit has a strong infusion of talent. When said talent develops a bit more and starts to realize its potential, the "culture" will magically be changed.

One game isn't going to have a carry-over effect. Getting more talented players will, though.

Former Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel has spoken to the New York Giants by telephone about their vacant defensive coordinator job, but he's giving the Kansas City Chiefs the first shot at hiring him.

Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Tuesday that Crennel talked to the Giants on Monday. However, Linta said Crennel is focused on becoming the Chiefs' defensive coordinator.

Paul Spinelli / Associated Press
Romeo Crennel went 24-40 in four years as the Browns' head coach before he was fired after the 2008 season.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that Crennel is in discussions with the Chiefs, but the sides don't have a deal at this point, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley has yet to clarify the status of current defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, who's still on staff.

Last week, the Chiefs hired former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis as their offensive coordinator. Weis previously was the offensive coordinator in New England under Bill Belichick at the same time that Crennel coordinated the Patriots' defense.

Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli was the Patriots' director of player personnel when Weis and Crennel were coordinators.

The Giants also interviewed Bills interim head coach Perry Fewell for their defensive coordinator job, which opened when Bill Sheridan was fired the day after the regular season ended.

Fewell also interviewed for the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator job.

The Giants gave up 427 points, ranking third from the bottom in the NFL. Only the Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams gave up more points. Opponents scored at least 40 points in five games against the Giants, the first time that has happened to the franchise since 1966.

The Giants also fired defensive line coach Mike Waufle, who interviewed for the same job with the Washington Redskins on Monday, a source with knowledge of the situation told La Canfora.

Well your in that 99 to 1 ratio then.

Make that two.

I love the Weis hire and expect it to pay great dividends this season.

I'm lukewarm on Crennel. I would have rather seen Todd Bowles or an equally inspired hire.

Color me neutral on this hire.

If this doesn't work out, then there is absolutely no excuses. They're bringing in all their guys, with their schemes and it's their way. No room for failure. Honestly if we dont win at least 9 games next year then the Patriots experiment is failed.

This is eerily reminiscent of the Dick Vermeil years. All those guys worked together forever and all earned one big final paycheck.

Let's hope this doesn't end like that did.

I cannot believe how many people are buying into this, considering the source. Who knows? Maybe they really are the first to find out and post it. I'd be puzzled as to why it would be them first. But I still won't buy it until a more reliable source says something other than what has been said a thousand times.

I'm pretty neutral on the Crennel hire. Not thrilled, but not upset either.

My concern is that if you take the 5 defenses he was the DC of, and average out their rankings, you find that they are pretty average.

18th in Total Defense.
18th in Rush Defense.
16th in Pass Defense.
11th in points.

But did they make you want to stand up, beer in hand, and scream "Ameri-ca...FUCK YEAH"!

Crennell (and the Hoodie) threw in some blitzes and the corners played a physical style that one could misconstue as aggressive, but the reality is, it really was a rather passive style of defense that they played overall.

My point is, yes, there were things last year that people hated, mainly the decision to trade a second for Cassel instead of drafting Sanchez. I understand that. But, it would be nice to see a discussion about THIS offseason that didn't turn into the same old discussion about how much everyone detests the moves from last year.

It's not like I'm going out of my way to do so, but Pioli himself has put us in this position.

So when it's relevant, I may bring it up. Like your scenario from earlier. Thanks to the fuck-ups of last year, we're probably going to pass on one of those R2 playmakers to fill a need.

Yeah, it is pathetic. That's why I can't understand why you can't at least get a little excited about the change of having Peterson out, and having Pioli here and bringing in Weis and Crennel in this year. I think those are steps in the right direction.

However, you can't get excited about it at all.

Meanwhile, USC brings in Lane Kiffin, who has never won anything, and you are pissing yourself in excitement.

That has more to do with the staff Kiffin is bringing with him....

Look they have this offseason to redeem themselves but so far, I'm not impressed.

Crennell (and the Hoodie) threw in some blitzes and the corners played a physical style that one could misconstue as aggressive, but the reality is, it really was a rather passive style of defense that they played overall.

See, that's sort of what I feel about those defenses.
Not really "prevent", but not really "Berserker" either. Kind of a calculated, methodical, mechanical style of defense where big, aggressive plays occasionally seep through the woodwork and hopefully surprise the opposition at opportune moments.

That looks pretty damn good.

Like OTWP said though, we do need to get a NT either in FA or the draft too.

What the hell is it going to take to get you people on the Ryan Pickett bandwagon?

If the Pack doesn't re-sign him, he will be a FA, CBA or not. Packers drafted BJ Raji to replace him but Raji couldn't take the job. The Pack will probably not pay to re-sign him and he is by far the best NT candidate that we know will hit the market.

As far as whether any of this Romeo crap is new news; ESPN has a bit about it on their site and just says:
"Former Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel has spoken to the New York Giants by telephone about their vacant defensive coordinator's job but is giving the Kansas City Chiefs the first shot at hiring him.
Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Tuesday that Crennel talked to the Giants on Monday.

Linta said Crennel is focused on becoming the Chiefs' defensive coordinator.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley has yet to clarify the status of current defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, who is still on the staff."

I think that has been discussed already.

This is precisely the kind of move Pioli should make and I don't think there will be quite the high dollar market for him that you might expect. He signed a 4 year, $14 million contract with $5 mil guaranteed in 2006. We could give him a 4 year deal to the 30 year old without paying thru the nose.

Teams running a 3-4 that could try for him: Jets, Browns, Chargers, Broncos & Steelers; if they think Hampton is near the end. Pickett is 2 years younger than Hampton but Hampton has had some injury problems. Chargers will look to replace or backup Jamal Williams. Though they just drafted Vaughn Martin in the 4th last year, he's been backing up Ian Scott. Browns may not think that Rogers will ever get back in game shape and make a move for him. I think Pouha is probably safe with the Jets.

Speaking of point c...it would probably be a lot cheaper for him to overpay for Pickett or another FA NT (should one become available) than it would be to take 1 in the first round and pay that ridiculous guaranteed money.

Yep. If Pioli could get Pickett to fill the spot for a few years, they could wait and let players fall to them in the draft instead of reaching for guys like TJ.

Just like it would have been worth overpaying Canty or Olshansky and passing on Jackson.

Precisely.

I would like to think that, after his 2 TD game and became a "core player" DJ would be given every opportunity to take a starting spot next to Demorrio.

I've said elsewhere that I think Haley would love an excuse to keep Brown on the field and what better way than giving him a young, high draft pick to groom.

To be fair, the Packers D was shredded by every good quarterback they played this year other than Romo. Clay Matthews is their only pass rusher and their shitty secondary depth makes them very vulnerable to the spread. Green Bay had a pretty good defense, but its elite numbers were probably a product of a soft schedule.

They have plenty of talent going forth though. There probbaly isn't a team better set up for the next 5 years than green Bay.

Crennel wants to work for Chiefs
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

If the Chiefs want Romeo Crennel as their defensive coordinator, the next move is theirs.

Crennel’s agent, Joe Linta, said Tuesday the veteran coordinator’s preference was to work next season for the Chiefs.

“Would he take it if they offered the job? I suppose he would,” Linta said.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley has said he would evaluate the performance of the defensive coaches, including coordinator Clancy Pendergast, and make a determination on which ones would return next season.

Defensive line coach Tim Krumrie, whose contract expired, has been told he won’t return.

Linta said Crennel has already discussed the coordinator’s position with Haley. That suggests Haley has decided to make a change.

Crennel is coaching this week at the East-West Shrine Game in Orlando, Fla. Linta indicated Crennel would like to have something resolved with the Chiefs quickly.

“First shot (goes) to the Chiefs if it works out,” Linta said. “ If not, four other (teams are) interested in him.”

Linta said Crennel spoke with the New York Giants this week about becoming their defensive coordinator.

Haley and general manager Scott Pioli have worked with Crennel. For three years in the late 1990s, Haley and Crennel were assistant coaches with the New York Jets.

Crennel was defensive coordinator for the Patriots for four seasons in the early 2000s while Pioli was personnel director.

Crennel, 62, was head coach of the Browns from 2005 through 2008 before he was fired. He was out of football last year.

When I found out this news on Monday, the source told me that Romeo was determined to come here, but the agent was determined to get top dollar for his client. By telling the Giants they were on hold, coming out to the media that he's talked to the Chiefs but no offer, indicated to other teams that he's still in play, but in reality he was just collecting offers to bring back to the Chiefs.
