Man, I like this guy. I wish he was my brah/friend/pal.

He got beaten during the march in Selma and now he gets his 15 mintues.

http://content.usatoday.com/communit...-look/1?csp=hf (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/idolchatter/post/2010/01/general-larry-platt-a-closer-look/1?csp=hf)

The you tube clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Am-Y5DVjZIA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Am-Y5DVjZIA)&

We all got a good chuckle Wednesday out of General Larry Platt (http://www.generallarryplatt.com/) and his Pants on the Ground (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Am-Y5DVjZIA&) song. Entertaining as he was, I couldn't help but wonder why the American Idol producers saved the last spot of the show for a 62-year-old guy with a funny song.
Now I think I know.
Take a look at the photograph on the home page of the Civil Rights Veterans Movement (http://www.crmvet.org/) website. See the young man on the left, looking directly into the camera? That's Larry Platt, age 16.

"We had come by bus in 1963 to a church in Savannah, Georgia to plan a march to desegregate the city," Platt writes (http://www.crmvet.org/vet/plattl.htm). "Reverend Hosea Williams and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were our leaders. That particular planned march was canceled and we were singing to raise our spirits before returning home."

Platt worked with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (http://www.ibiblio.org/sncc/) and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Christian_Leadership_Conference) in Georgia, organizing sit-ins in the South.

He was beaten during the Bloody Sunday march (http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/civilrights/al4.htm) from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery.

He got his nickname, "General," from the Rev. Hosea Williams (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1355/is_26_98/ai_68018830/) because of his heroic efforts on behalf of the civil-rights movement.

The Georgia General Assembly proclaimed Sept. 4, 2001, Larry Platt Day (http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2005_06/fulltext/hr286.htm) in Atlanta, because of "his great energy and commitment to equality and the protection of the innocent and for his outstanding service to the Atlanta community and the citizens of Georgia."

He remains a community activist in the Atlanta area and recently has become known for publicly protesting foreclosures.

If anybody in that Atlanta crowd deserved his 15 minutes of fame on national television, it was Larry Platt (http://projects.ajc.com/gallery/view/metro/north-fulton/0202lives/3.html).

When he tells you to get your pants off the ground, you'd best listen.

Interesting.

I admit, when I first saw this on the news last night I rolled my eyes. I was thinking "if they knew he was too old to compete why did they let him?"

Now that I read the above I understand and think it's pretty cool.

FWIW I haven't seen the video, just heard about it on the news last night. At work so can't watch right now.

Sen. Eric Adams fights 'crack' epidemic by launching ads urging youth to pull up saggy pants

His message probably won't go viral like an "American Idol (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/American+Idol)" audition, but one Brooklyn (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Brooklyn+(New+York+City)) politician is urging young people to keep their pants off the ground.

State Sen. Eric Adams will announce Sunday the posting of six giant billboards in Brooklyn targeting the saggy trend.
The billboards go up Monday.

"This whole sagging pants culture seems to have swept the city and the country," said Adams, a Democrat.

"Children will be children. But as adults, we need to be on record and tell them they're doing something wrong."

The 22-foot-tall billboards will be erected along heavily traveled streets, primarily in Crown Heights (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Crown+Heights).

Adams said he used $2,000 in campaign funds to pay for the billboards.
Each billboard features two male models whose pants are hanging so low their underwear is showing.

The message: "Stop the Sag!" and "We are better than this!"
The stop-the-sag movement got a huge boost earlier this year when "American Idol" contestant Larry Platt (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Larry+Platt) auditioned for the show.
Clips of his original "Pants on the Ground" song, which urged people to pull up their pants, exploded on the Internet.

"I saw it," Adams said of the Platt video. "I thought it was funny. But when you look at it more closely, you see how big this matter is. When we sag like that, we're playing into it. We look like clowns."

Adams has never participated in the fashion trend, which he said began among prison inmates.

"On a practical level, how do they even walk?" he wondered.

The former NYPD (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/New+York+City+Police+Department) captain and co-founder of 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/100+Blacks+in+Law+Enforcement+Who+Care) said he will send a letter to Schools Chancellor Joel Klein (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Joel+Klein) recommending a citywide dress code to prevent sagging in public schools.

Young men in Crown Heights were skeptical.

"It's more comfortable below the hip," said Saquan Spaulding (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Saquan+Spaulding), 19, sporting black jeans with black boxers held up with a studded belt. "It's good for [Adams] to try and change it, but I doubt it's going to happen."
Older people just don't get it, he said. "It's a young thing."
