View Full Version : What's with all the late 1st rounders skipping the Senior Bowl

I understand why guys like Suh or even Okung would skip the Senior Bowl, since everyone has them unanimously rated very high (or at the top of their respective positions), but what is with all of the later first round talent and 2nd round talent skipping out on the Sr. Bowl? I thought those guys usually like to play in order to elevate their status. Are they injured? Hiding flaws? Don't think the potential risk is worth the reward?

In particular: Kindle, Williams, Sapp, Spiller, Spikes and Hughes (dropping out).

I don't have an answer to this but Hughes dropping out was the most puzzling one for me. He(I would say) has the most to show in converting from a DE to a possible 34 OLB.

i dunno either ... i would think that all of the 3-4 DE/OLB tweeners would show up to learn and/or prove they can do both.

Probably felt they had more to lose than gain, guys who know they'll have to make position changes may not want to look poor it could cost them money.

You missed LaFell. I think he is just being lazy. Atleast McCoy has an excuse.

LaFell was probably told he's a 1st rounder.

LaFell was probably told he's a 1st rounder.

If he has good workouts he can be. But I don't like his drops from what I've seen. He looks like a lesser Dwayne Bowe. Put him on a good team though and he will have better numbers.

The senior bowl was the reason Ziggy Hood was taken in the first round last year. Players like Hughes should pay attention to that kind of stuff.

Ziggy looks like he is going to be a very very good 5 technique in the NFL at this rate. Hmm, maybe we should have gone for value like Pittsburgh did instead of wasting a top 5 pick on a 5 tech.

Teams will work them out in private workouts anyway and their flaws will be exposed. It seems to me that they'd have more to gain moving into the top 20 than falling into the 2nd. Money drops precipitously in the first round.

If you're athletic like say Kindle or Hughes it's a lot easier to look good in a workout than have the first time you've ever played a position happen in front of NFL people against other draft prospects.

Difference between middle of the 1st and early 2nd:

1.21 - C, Alex Mack, California - Signed - 5-years, $15.175M max. ($9.265M guaranteed)
2.36 - WR, Brian Robiskie, Ohio State - Signed - 4-years, $4.91M ($2.925M guaranteed)

Kindle, Williams and Spiller are going in the 1st round, them not being there isn't an issue to me, they probably should have pulled out.

Hughes probably should have gone because just being from TCU has some questions, I think Sapp and Spikes were told they're gonna go in about a 10-20 pick range regardless of what they do this offseason. Spikes basically has no chance of being a 1st round pick anymore.
