To get a bunch of penalties in the Superbowl. What kinda dumbass team announces publicly they want to injure the QB and aren't above taking cheap shots to do it?

Gregg Williams suggests the Saints want to injure Manning
Posted by Mike Florio on January 28, 2010 8:48 AM ET
During their march through the playoffs, the New Orleans Saints have battered and bruised (and nearly broken) two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks -- Kurt Warner of the Cardinals and Brett Favre of the Vikings.

They're now setting their sights on a third man whose oversized forehead eventually will be memorialized in bronze.

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams recently told a Nashville radio station that the Saints plan to rattle Colts quarterback Peyton Manning by hitting him whenever they can, and that the goal is to knock him out of the game.

"This guy's got a great clock in his head," Williams told 104.5 The Zone, via ESPN.com. "The big thing is that he throws the ball so early that we're going to have to do a good job of finding ways to get to him and when we do get to him we're going to have to make sure he gets a couple 'remember me' shots when we get there."

The Saints applied several "remember me" shots to Favre on Sunday, prompting many a Vikings fan to utter a phrase that for broadcast television purposes would be edited to sound like "forget you." One such hit to Favre's legs didn't draw a flag, even though NFL V.P. of officiating Mike Pereira admitted last night that a roughing the passer penalty should have been called.

And Williams won't be reeling in his troops for the Super Bowl. Instead, it sounds like he's willing to risk a few 15-yard walk-offs if it means that Manning eventually will be carted off the field.

"When you put too much of that type of worry on a warrior's mind, he doesn't play all out," Williams said. "If it happens, it happens. And the only thing you'd like for me to say is that if it happens you hope he doesn't get back up and play again."

You hope he doesn't get back up and play again. (We wonder what Archie thinks about his former team's objectives?)

In other words, "We'll gladly trade a penalty or two if it means that we get to see Curtis Painter instead of Peyton Manning."

In other words, the NFL should consider fining not only the players when dirty hits are applied to quarterbacks, but also their coaches.

In fairness, the Saints were flagged on some of the hits on Favre. I can remember at least one of them that was dubious.

I agree that its pretty stupid to go out and publicize malicious intent. The Saints risk unfavorably influencing the officials and Drew Brees' safety.

It bothers me how they're okay with it. Is this the team I want to win?

But then I look at it and wonder if its like hitting a baseball player so he'll freak when you throw high and inside. Or hacking someone for fouls in basketball.

It isn't really different than either of those two. But it feels different.

It's the only way they can win. The funny thing is Drew Brees isn't the biggest guy in the world. It's pretty fucking stupid to announce it to the media. Maybe if Manning were a rookie it would make sense.

I just doubt that this is going to be an issue. Of course, the idea is to hit Manning. That's the only way, in his entire career, that you can throw him off his game. You look at any friggin' game he's ever lost, that's how you do it. To do it late? against the rules? dirty? Ehhh... I don't think that's going to work out for them. Like one or two late hits and it'll be pretty obvious that something wrong is going on and ejections everywhere. I just don't buy it. That's really not how they played all year, and I think it's a pretty classy bunch of guys overall. I could be wrong (Dane, feel free to call me a pussy here!) but I think this is much ado about nothing.

It was pretty bad in the Vikings game since they were obviously trying to hit Favre even after the play was over. And the lunge at the back of the legs wasn't even called. During that game, I started to think they need to actually rachet UP qb protection; first time I had thought that in a while. When it is obvious the team is taking that approach, they penalties should get more and more severe. And maybe even start ejections. Penalty kick?! :: chuckle ::

Good God dude, come on. The defensive coordinator says he wants to put hits on the QB??? Stop the fucking presses. That's the whole point of playing defense. Not just sacks; hits will probably play a bigger role anyway.

Now, if he'd said 'we want Manning to put his mouth on the curb' that's different, isn't it?

Will Smith

"We get paid to stop the run and sack the quarterback and hit the quarterback," Saints defensive end Will Smith said. "Defensively we're just doing our job. If the guy gets hurt in the process, that's just too bad."

From Pardon The Interuption and I love Wilbon's take.

ESPN's Tony Kornheiser took issue with Williams. "I don't think he should have said it. I think it is most foul the way he said it," Kornheiser said. "Williams basically put a bounty on Peyton Manning's head."

His co-host on "Pardon the Interruption" defended Williams. "This guy coaches defense. That's what he ought to feel, and it's what he ought to be coaching," Michael Wilbon said.

Wilbon told Williams' critics, "Too bad. It's football. Stop sanitizing football!"

Well, I dont' really care where they drafted who; I just still like to watch football played at a high level, even though I'm a Chiefs fan. Won't go ga-ga over other teams in the AFC West, but the Colts and Manning have been playing football at a very high level for quite a while. And I think he is one of the greatest QB's to play the game and if he wins another one, I expect that will shut up a bunch of this critics.

Well I don't agree with this bickering back and forth through the media bullshit that all teams do now days anyway.I've always felt like you should shut your mouth during the week, and do your talking on the field game day,but thats a thing of the past.I don't want Manning to be taken out of the game either, but I do wan't the Saints to win.

You always stand a better chance of beating the other team when you knock their starting QB out (except maybe the Raiders). If the Chiefs were playing the Colts in the playoffs, I'd sure as hell want Hali to cleanly knock Manning out of the game.

As a dedicated Manning hater, I see nothing wrong with breaking his assbone which is connected to his headbone. The NFL is in a difficult position here, though. They've been allowing the Saints to get away with murder in these playoffs. If they start calling a tighter game, it's going to look like favoritism. Manning has the most endorsements of any player in all of history from the beginning of time immemorial, though, so they'll have to protect him.

I just hope it's a good game. No punts or anything.

thats bullshit. its just fodder for the players & fans. Ive heard GW talk the same way about football my entire life. Kill the guy across from you,old school smash mouth, knock people out football.

I can guarantee coach respects any football player he goes against that plays at a high level.
He coaches his guys to play fundamental mistake free football, stay in position within the scheme and make plays when the opportunity comes your way. He doesnt put bounties on players or tolerate players who get loose within the game.
like i said its just something for the players and fans to get fired up about.

I just hope with the CBA comes some kind of ref reform. Technically the refs aren't full-time workers of the NFL or whatever, but they should make them such. Build or buy a building some where and call it the NFL Ref College and send their asses there every offseason for the majority of it to study their missed and fucked up calls as well as teach younger ones what the fuck to do. They also need to add at least 2 more refs on the field now. 1 has to watch the QB only at all times (and to be an expert on the ridiculous penalties), and another needs to watch the secondary or something in an attempt to cut down on the ass rape PI calls.

They also need to beef up the replay booth numbers or something, because that shit should be as efficient as most college games. All plays should be up for review if they are bad enough calls or miscalls.

Also, since more plays will be challenged, I would like to see the TV commercial breaks after kicks done away with, and made more like the college game where its quick turnaround right after the kickoff.

Sorry, a little off topic, but I had to vent, and I have to poop now.

Side Note: when is Williams going to start getting credit in the mainstream, that he's a Hell of a defensive coordinator?

Fact is the guy coaches to the point where his players will run through walls for him.

If I was on an NFL defense I would say it ervery week. That's their job, to injure the other team to the point that they say "I quit"

The Saints defense wasn't all that good this year. Let's face it, Minny marched up and down the field on them. If Minnesota didn't fumble the game away and then suffer brain farts (12 men in the huddle) and a Favre, they easily win the game.

They didn't "fumble" the game away, the Saints took the ball away. That's what the did all year. The Saints also have one of the best red zone defenses in the league.

And someone hopes the Saints get crushed because their defensive coordinator wants to knock the shit out of the other teams QB?

Oh and here is the exact quote from Williams............

And no point did he talk about cheap shots or injuring Manning or anything like that. This is pretty much the same thing every defensive coordinator in the league says, and some of you homos are butthurt about it? Holy shit. Weak sauce.

How about this one?

In other words, "We'll gladly trade a penalty or two if it means that we get to see Curtis Painter instead of Peyton Manning."

Well, that should be one their goals. The chances of the Saints winning dramatically increase if Manning gets taken out.

Of course, it could also mean that the Saints will not care about the pussiness of the rules and will play old school defensive football.

I think most of the guys freaking out about this is the part where he said you have to hope Manning doesn't get back up and play again. That's not verbatim but it is close. I heard the radio interview where he said it and it is taken out of context. He was joking when he said it and I'm fairly certain that he intended as, "Manning is going to get up pissed and really kick our ass."

IMO, he's just recongnizing that Manning is good and if you get after him, he won't go all Huard on you. He will take advantage of what you give him.

It's all taken out of context IMO. Standard coach-speak is "we need to find a way to get to the quarterback". This is the same damn thing. He was just a little more explicit.

This goddamn over-analysis of everything these guys say is precisely why no coach says anything. Ever.

"When I see guys huddling up after the game, to pray, that's what scares me about the game. I'm a Baptist, but I'm also a quarterback killer, and I ain't praying with you. But I will give you 30 seconds to ask your Lord and master to keep me from killing you." -- Hall of Fame defensive end "Deacon" Jones on what aspect of the modern game most upsets him.

Nawlins is definitely putting a Papa Jango Jynxo on itself with this kind of talk... right or wrong, its terrible tactics to say this so bluntly... the refs will be ALL over it now.

NO needed every advantage & subterfuge they could muster anyway, now they've stolen one from themselves.

This game will be interesting until early in the 3rd, then the seasoned Colts will just cruise away.

Williams told his son, who plays for Virginia Tech, to strive for the same impact, to “make sure every player that played against you remembers your number, remembers your name, and if they can’t, it’s because you knocked the memory out of them. That’s how good defensive players play.”

Yeah I know, but I don't hate Manning,I just don't like the Colts.I think Caldwell has been given way too much credit for the their success, much like many other HC's that take over a program that was already a team built to win.Callahan,Switzer,etc...
I just would much rather see the Saints win it all.

I disagree here.

I think that Caldwell has brought a little more toughness overall to that team, and the team is better overall because of it.

That team was far too soft under Dungy.
