Has anyone ever passed by those people who hold up signs and wave them along the road? There's been a massive influx of these "jobs" put up along the major roadways in Colorado Springs despite the wintery conditions. Kind of hard not to feel sorry for these poor guys, as I've already seen three or four people honk their horn and give them the middle finger since they've sprouted up.

If I were unemployed, I'm still not sure I'd take a job like that on....

Yeah I'd have to be pretty damn desperate before I'd do that. I really think it needs to be outlawed anyway, the last thing drivers need these days is another distraction.

There were some people protesting using this method in Joplin a few years ago. They were holding the signs over their faces so nobody would recognize them.

I wonder if it helps, like if they've done studies and it's actually boosted their business?

Where I live....those guys make $10-$12 an hour to stand out there. If I could find out where to apply....I'd do that for a second job.

LOL...I wish I had a video of this, but I kid you not- a couple of weeks ago I was driving around doing errands when I spotted this kid dressed up as Gene Simmons of Kiss. He was prancing back and forth, jamming on a guitar with a speaker next to him on the ground. He was advertising for the local guitar shop.

I really get annoyed at the vendors who come up to my car when I stop at a red light trying to sell me candy or something. I just look straight ahead and as they get close to my car I yell in a real loud crazy angry voice "GET AWAY FROM MY CAR!!!"

They act like they think "I'm" the crazy one.

Actually, come to think of it, they may be right. Oh.....

There are tons here in San Diego.....during the new housing boom a few years back, there was one at almost every stoplight.

A friend and I commented a few years back....there should be an awards show based upon the skills that these guys possess. (because some of the guys/girls really seem to get into it)

"Highest sign toss"
"Craziest costume"
"Best use of props"
"Best dance moves"

etc etc.

the one in Aberdeen, South Dakota when i was up there always either had a girl as the Statue of Liberty or a guy dressed as Uncle Sam that frantically waved at everyone as they passed by. The guy was over the top... he deserved a raise...

There's a Liberty Tax Service and a pizza joint I pass daily that each have a guy on the shoulder.

The pizza guy is dressed as a slice of pizza, so at least he probably stays somewhat warm inside that suit. They were shooting the shit together while I was sitting at a stoplight yesterday, and were almost taken out by a car that had swerved to the shoulder to avoid rear-ending someone stopped at the light from the other direction.

You couldn't pay me enough, considering how shitty most drivers are.

Same here ... they do seem to do their jobs with enthusiasm though.

One of the pizza places has someone out advertsing specials, usually high school kids that work there, but they modified the sign so that it spins and has handles - the kids get pretty good at spinning it, throwing it in the air, catching it, etc. - a bit entertaining to watch, I always honk and wave to show appreciation for their efforts.

I always honk and wave to show appreciation for their efforts.Next time throw them a cheap bottle of vodka. High schoolers appreciate that a whole lot more than honking and waving.

KB Homes had these people everywhere in the Phoenix area three years ago. I think the challenge was to have the tallest stake with as many signs as possible... and lots of arrows pointing to the land of financial ruin.

Some restaurants have these on the pedestrian mall where I work, and it actually worked on me. A new barbecue place opened up in this hard-to-see basement space, and I would've never known about it if not for the guy holding his sign out on the mall. So the profit from my barbecue sandwich paid for 20 minutes of sign-holding.

I agree that they present a distraction to drivers, though. I don't think they should be allowed. There's some stupid web site that I refuse to visit that had a sign holder out on a corner one day, and they don't even have a storefront. It's just a web site. These are the same people who had the bright idea of putting flyers on all the cars in my neighborhood too, so now we have lots of flyers trashing up various gutters. I hate those people.

The reason they proliferate is two-fold:

1. You can't just put a billboard wherever you want. There's rulz bout these things.
2. Advertising can really work.

Pizza, Payday Loans, Etc.

They're all businesses that benefit from advertising and don't suffer any image setback by using this method (I wouldn't want to shop for my dentist this way, for instance.)

It's surely a boon to those businesses. No question. Who said americans won't do the low jobs, anyway?

"That's not a living billboard subject to zoning and city regs, that's just a guy in a foam suit."

"Cardiac bypass surgery - Turn right at next intersection!"

"Psychological counseling! Turn here!"

"International commercial tariff legal advising! Left on Main!"

Seems like it could work for anybody. Except maybe...

"Eyeglasses for the Extremely Nearsighted! On sale today!"

or maybe

"Driver training courses! Learn here!"
