Chiefs GM Pioli Names Fans As Reason Training Camp Is Moving
by Joel Thorman 2/12/2010

These days there are only a few teams that move far, far away for training camp. The Chiefs had been in River Falls, WI the last 19 years -- about a seven hour drive from Kansas City -- and last year there were sometimes only a few hundred fans on weekday practices.

In contrast, other teams that hold training camp closer to their fanbase, would have thousands of fans each day.

"Again, it’s not just the players, it’s everybody," he said. "I think having the fans there and the energy that comes from the fans is really going to help us as a football team and again, I think everyone wins in this situation. The fans wanted us closer and we’re going to be closer."

Pioli says the fans can give the players some energy on days when the "grueling" training camp makes it hard to get out of bed.

He also said a big part of the move to St. Joe was the difficulty of players, coaches and team employees being away from their family for so long.

"When we were seven hours from here, it was difficult," he said. "We went away and we didn’t see people for a couple of weeks and just to be able to have that interaction with your family, with friends, with some faces that are familiar, it’s really a positive thing"

In the past, Pioli says, that would be considered a distraction but he says he knows he wants to see his own family when at training camp.

I wonder what team they will scrimmage against now. I'm only assuming they wouldn't stick with the Vikings.

I think it's an awesome move for all the reasons he stated....but wasn't this decided before Pioli came to KC?

I absolutely loved the River Falls/Hudson area. I know a lot of IA Chief fans made the trip.

I don't think I have any interest right now of heading to St Joe for training camp.

Yes, it's great to move it closer to KC. Yes, it's great to give the fans more of an opportunity to watch practices. But don't fool yourselves... the unwritten part of this article is how much more PROFITABLE it is. Take it from someone who goes to Patriots practices, where they pimp the sodas and food and make sure the Pro Shop is open (and that you know about it).

Not to my knowledge. I think this was strictly Pioli.

This.

River Falls was the perfect spot. Weather was excellent, the people were fantastic and the crowds were manageable.

STJ is going to be a 100 degree circus.

Hell, it's half the drive for me, but I'll pass.

Pioli doesn't mention that they moved it to the carbuncle on the asshole of the Earth.

Anyone expecting more holdouts than usual because of this?

None of these guys like TC, but they're going to like it even less with a 30 degree change in temperature.

I don't know, do the Florida teams experience more holdouts?

I think it was Carl who announced they wouldnt be re-newing the contract with UWRV. Who's idea to move TC to Missouri Western is beyond me.

I'd rather have it back at William Jewell then St Joe.

I think the Lake of the Ozarks or Branson would be a great spot for training camp.

Yes, we'd be better off if the Chiefs would lose money.
