There was a time, over 20 years ago, when I'd drive to Missouri from the base at Great Lakes every other weekend. That was either six or seven hours each way, depending on where I went. Can't imagine driving even farther than that every weekend, especially being so much older now. Brutal.
But I guess you do what you've got to do for your family.

I go up to NYC once a week for class and I'm lucky enough there's a train 10 minutes from my house that drops me off in NYC train station a 15 minute taxi ride from the destination. There's no way I could drive that once a week especially when you get in the NYC traffic. I get there early and hang out in a coffee shop until class starts.
You couldn't pay me enough money to live in NYC.
That poor guy needs a new job...or move.

Top, down, bottoms up. When we quit making quality, basic and value-added stuff in this country, we screwed ourselves and our kids. I don't blame either guy for doing what they're doing. To retire at age 50 with full bennies, is but a dream for more than 50% of the labor force.

I thought it was bad enough driving from Lawrence to the Northland last summer. Its true though when your in that situation where money is a tough commodity.. you will do almost anything in your power.

It's why his company is languishing to begin with.

I really don't feel sorry for him. The only reason he's doing this is because he's 2.5 years away from a full pension and insurance for life in just 2 years, not because he's unemployable.
This is part of the reason why GM needed bailout money.
They're run by idiots.
