The modem thing might help, but don't expect to actually see 12. That's considered a "maximum," not the actual level you should expect to see.

I have 12 meg service from UVerse and usually get a max of 11.5 on my desktop. I'm happy with that. My laptop is usually in the 5-7mb range. I assume that's because I'm on a slower wireless connection?

That's around what I've been told also...85%-90%. Most of the time if I check at the NID it's 100%. After going through the IW and modem it's a little slower.

Also, check the wording and see if it says "up to" 12 Mbps.

yeah, I got tech support on the phone and they had me do that as well as connect the ethernet wire which the ethernet light didn't come on the modem . They had me check the filters too. Now they have a service tech coming out monday. 6 is still better than 3. But I'm paying for 12.

Thats pretty much why I went with cable instead of dish. Cable>DSL>>>dial-up

FYI.... don't let your ISP talk you into paying extra for any "Power Boost" technology unless you do quite a bit of downloading of very large files(200+ MB). Stuff like downloading movies or hundreds of albums at once. Unless you do that frequently, you'll never notice or use the additional speed. The only advantage it gives you is faster transfer when downloading big files. Many people get that thinking it will speed up their computer in general when browsing, but that's not the case.

They screw a lot of people that way. I can't count how many older folks I know that have been duped into this. When all they do is check e-mail and play Bejeweled. But they have an older computer, and were sold that the the Speed Boost would make "things" faster for an additional $X per month....
