Chiefs Showing "Serious" Interest In NT Shaun Smith

According to a league source, the Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/KAN) are showing "serious" interest in free agent Shaun Smith, the 28 year old defensive tackle most recently of the Bengals (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/CIN).

Smith comes with experience in the 3-4 defense and a familiarity with a couple of key members of the Chiefs.

In 2003, Bill Parcells signed him as an undrafted free agent. He lasted a year in Dallas crossing paths with Todd Haley for just a short period of time. In 2007, he was signed by the Cleveland Browns (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/CLE) who were coached at the time by -- you guessed it -- Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

We're told the interest in Smith is due in large part to the presence of Crennel. The Chiefs worked Smith out back in October without signing him to a contract.

Smith is listed at 6'2" and over 320 pounds, which is good size for a 3-4 nose tackle.

Our source believes a deal is on the horizon but we've yet to confirm. Smith's agent had not responded to our email request as of this posting.

Signed originally by none other than Bill Par-motherfuckin-cells.

Stunning.

Getting a look purely because he played with Romeo.

My guess is, given that nobody seems to care about this guy but us, this is probably just a familiarity move. God help us if this is the guy we depend on going into 2010.

Stunning.I don't see anything wrong with having some familiarity with a player's work ethic, character, etc...especially with as many holes as this team has. We need all the help we can get.

NT is certainly a mystery at this point. Not sure what to make of the Rogers/Smith/Cody swirl. Converting to the 3-4 after all the years of drafting for the 4-3 has been quite the pisser. I hope someone at Arrowhead figures this out. SOON.

Eh, nothing saying if he will make the final roster. We need improvement at the nose tackle position. I am for bringing in plenty of competition.

There's nothing wrong with it, except when it's the case for nearly every player we go after.

Who Cares? The Chiefs, (If I were running the orginazation) "As we are all armchair GM's on this site", should be bringing in competition at every spot they need before the draft. This would help them possibly make better picks during the draft, right?

Eh... Not sure he'd be an answer.

Guy's had about 27 starts in a 7 year career.
Had one good season about 3 years ago.

Who do we have right now that is a true 3-4 NT? Oh yea, that one guy, Mr. No One.

You're right. That's why I'm not opposed to signing him.
But if I did I think I'd still draft one in April.

I see this as a depth signing. We currently have no true NT's on this roster.

My bet is that they're hoping Mount Cody falls to our 2A pick.

Still would love to draft Berry with our first. Still need major upgrades at the OL, LB and WR positions.

I think what people are failing to realize is that even if we draft Cody, Cam Thomas or whoever, i doubt theyll start next year and even if they do, i think we could stand to have some better back ups than ron fucking edwards...

It's definitely true that Smith is an upgrade over Edwards. Doesn't hurt to have depth.

I laughed when I read the headline.

In my previous Madden online franchise I traded for this guy to play the nose.

Yeah that's a pat on the back for myself right there. :P

If it means anything, he did okay for me. ;)

Shaun Smith is a cancer in the locker room. He is the guy who punched Brady Quinn a couple of years ago.

Good, then maybe he will knock some sense into Cassel when he starts to suck.

This is getting fucking retarded..we sign players just because our coaches and front office know them? Rather than going out and getting real talent, we sign someone because they have previously sucked off Pioli/Haley/Crennel..This is worse than Carl hiring his buddies..Basically if they don't know you fuck off, but if they do, no matter how bad you suck they'll sign you. Good idea.

When was Dan Saleaumua on the roster? He was a NT right?
