I have a friend up in the Baltimore area who is going to have some friends together to have a beer tasting at his house. I thought that sounded like fun.

How would you do that though? Have a BYO and have people RSVP and let you know what kind of beer they're bringing?

I would recommend a head count and up front contributions so you can buy the brew yourself for the evening unless you want to taste everything available in the Miller product line. Plus then you can make sure that everyone has enough to sample everything and you'll have plenty of leftover beer.

That's an excellent idea.

Heh. I suppose I'll let you know next time I plan a big one.

My favorite beer tasting is the one I've done where we compare how beer pairs with cheese to how wine pairs with cheese. 9.5/10 people, including oenophiles, will concede after the results of the tasting that beer is a superior beverage to drink with fine cheeses.

I much prefer beer over wine anyway. :D

I host one just about every night. Sometimes I'm the only one attending though.

I've hosted and attended a number of beer tastings amongst my group of friends. We're all big beer nuts, and our tastings are generally focused on a particular style or genre - belgians, pale ales, imperial stouts, bocks, etc. You could also do tasting based on country or region - belgium, germany, england, etc.

We ask for everyone attending to bring at least 2 quality beers (no BMC), with enough to fill a sample glass for every attendee (3-4oz). Attendees are asked to email the host their selections prior to the event, in order to prevent duplicates.

Here's the end result of our Belgian tasting :toast: :

Aren't things from Belgium referred to as being Belgian?

Yes. They are.

Hopefully, your friends are discerning enough not to bring Bud. I've been to a few of these great-excuse-to-get-plowed parties. We had great success in letting everyone bring their own choice of brew.

Also, we had ratings forms made up that allowed us to rate the beer and the label. It was quite fun. Is anything that involves large quantities of good beer not fun? :)

Not that part of your post - the first part. :)

As for the Ommegang, one attendee didn't email his choices to the host, and thought that was brewed in Belgium. We let it slide...this time...

Ommegang beers would certainly fit in with a Belgian beer tasting.

As for the first part, I was just loudly exclaiming the overt Belgianness of that beer lineup.

Agreed - that's why we kept it in the lineup. The intent was actually Belgian beers brewed in Belgium, so the Ommegang didn't officially fit the criteria. It was a pretty epic night...

Gotcha on the first part. :) It was very Belgian-y...
