View Full Version : Life What greatness could you achieve in one year?

Rain Man

Today is March 18, 2010. If you put your laser mind to it and set that Bill Cowher-like jaw of yours and really, really went all out with no fear of failure and singleminded determination, what could you accomplish by March 18, 2011? And what's keeping you from doing it?

Just curious. I occasionally find myself feeling envious of people who are achieving great success, and then I realize that I'm not setting this Bill Cowher-like jaw of mine. Maybe it's time to make a push to achieve some greatness.

theres alot of pressure and responsibility in being great in a grand scale. think id rather be a king maker than a king. so i'll just be great in my tiny kingdom. great mom great lover great friend. these are worthwhile goals.

My blessings come from my kids and now my grandkids. I continue to believe I am the best at my job even though that doesn't translate into more money. Also, I have gone back to school and will obtain my bachelor's degree in a couple of years. That should help the income side.

I really don't want greatness any more. If I were to single-mindedly pursue greatness I feel my children and wife would suffer. I prefer to have the time and energy to appreciate my loved ones. That is the greatness I aspire to and hopefully have achieved.

Anyone with kids would have a hard time answering this. Once you have kids, any risk you take has a much greater overall effect. Great question though! (wish I'd thought of it before my kids!).

Great post Rainman. It is the last bit of inspiration I need to push me into action.

Starting first thing Monday morning I'm going to get the ball rolling. I've had a 'project' in mind for a few years now and one way or another I'm going to take care of business. It's quite an undertaking but after reading your post I realised I just need to set my mind to it. Thinking it through my best estimate is this is going to take at least one year maybe even two. It's even possible it could take 10 to 20 yrs. No small task but the end result, if it all works our alright will be very rewarding.

So, Monday morning, 8:00 am I'll be at the local post office here. Then on to the post office in the next town, then the next. One way or another I'm going to visit every post office within a 300 mile radius of here. Every single photo they have of me up on their bulletin boards is coming down.

I've been thinking about this exact same thing lately.

I finally decided that my goals for the next year are....
MCSA certification
EMC Clariion Certification
vMWare Certification

if at all possible. No boot camps either. I'm hoping that by this time next year I could make 1/4 - 1/3 more $$$$. It would depend on my girlfriend and I leaving the town we are in now though. Although small I kind of like it here. Would really like more money though.

Even if we don't leave I will be able to take great pride in the knowledge I have learned to go along with my experience.

Plan on taking 2 MCSA tests by mid-late april.
going on a mini vacation, coming back and taking EMC Clariion class and get certified.
Finish taking the rest of my MCSA studying and tests and if all goes well I'll be taking vmWare classes by the end of the year.

Gunna be tough working 45-50 hour weeks but I think I can do it.

What greatness could you achieve in one year?

That's a good question. :hmmm: I might do nothing for an entire year to bring myself down to the level of greatness.

All of these assume that I could devote myself to the task without dealing with realties like a job and other life issues.

I think I could design a really good reliable toaster and arrange for it's manufacture. There currently isn't one available. I think a good one could corner the market. I'd need help marketing it and a boat load of money to finance it.

I think I could build a really good BBQ business. I'd need someone to finance it.

I could remodel my house. I'd need money and a helper.

I could make a really good scoring system and game management website for Alternate Reality Football Game 3. I just need a few months alone with my computer.

Buehler445

I could substantially grow my business. What's stopping me is fiscal responsibility. If I abandoned that, it would likely get difficult to obtain financing.

I could develop one of many skills that would help me manage my operation, but it isn't possible to do it without abandoning some other duties.

I could develop a trading program. But I don't have the capital or the understanding to do so.

I could rule the world, I'd just need a little financial backing to obtain weapons of mass destruction.

I am much more likely to fall short of any greatness I aspire to rather than achieve it, so I can't add much to this thread.

I think I could produce a good psych/horror movie for under $1 million dollars.

I have a script in hand but I haven't had time to finish it (on page 28) and haven't been in the "right" mood when I've had a little time (going on 3 months).

I've got the people in place to make it happen, but I need to finish the script.

Hey man, "creatives" need time away from the canvass from time to time in order to create.

I sometimes do my best work when I'm taking a shower and not even thinking at the work at hand...

Well I start Nursing School on May 3rd. Its 11 month LPN program. Then I can bridge over to RN in 18 months. So 1 year I get a license and double what I am making now.

April of 2011 I will graduate.

Between going to school 4 days a week and working 3 nights a week, I will have little time for anything else and I can't wait to put my life and future in motion.

Well, I'm fortunate enough to have script in hand by a writer that's repped by CAA. He's got a $100 milllion dollar movie script that's being looked at by top directors.

The script I have could be made for less than $1 million or for as much as $10 million.

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to focus.

I have a GREAT idea for a Facebook or iPhone app. I don't think it would be too difficult to implement if you are a developer. I also think it could be really easily monetized.

Unfortunately, I don't have any coding skills or a lot of start-up capital to hire a good coder(s). :(

It doesn't take a fortune to develop an iphone or facebook app. If you believe in it that much convince someone to do it and share equity.

Just be sure to get a good hold of your competition and what they are up too.

In all seriousness, I'm thinking about writing a book about being the husband of a minister. A niche market, for sure, but nothing that's been written yet, and there are a ton of wierd dynamics involved.

I had an idea about what I could do with 1 year and 1 red paper clip, but then I found out someone had already done it. And besides, my wife didn't want me to waste the paper clip on my crazy dream.

My name is Kyle MacDonald and I traded one red paperclip for a house. I started with one red paperclip on July 12 2005 and 14 trades later, on July 12, 2006 I traded with the Town of Kipling Saskatchewan for a house located at 503 Main Street. (Click on pictures below to read about each trade!)
