ESPN's draft analyst Todd McShay indicated that at least 10 teams have expressed concerns about QB Jimmy Clausen's leadership and maturity. (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=5574)

McShay believes Clausen will have an easier transition than any rookie quarterback mentally because of his time in Charlie Weis' pro-style offense. Teams are concerned that he's "maxed out physically," though, while displaying a sense of entitlement. The maturity tag has followed Clausen for awhile, but this could be a case of teams simply spreading bad info.

I tried to get his name in the title but for context, but the title was too long.

When are quarterbacks not maxed out physically?

Did Joe Montana ever get bigger or stronger, or faster?

Let me guess. It was:
The browns, the bills, the jaguars, the seahawks, the dolphins, the 49ers, the titans, the cardinals, the vikings, and the eagles.

Clausen was the most overhyped QB coming out of HS in recent memory and he did nothing but lose games in college.

Wins and losses mean jack and shit.

David Greene and Colt McCoy have the most college wins, think that means much?

Wins is a team stat, Ken Dorsey won a lot of games, who cares.

You don't judge how players will transition to the NFL because they didn't get a bunch of wins because they happened to not play on a great team.

Notre Dame never plays anybody good though. You would think that a great QB would be able to win some games playing against weak opponents

They didn't lose games because they couldn't score so I don't see how this argument flies.

I know Elway didn't have a winning record in college but he was playing with future doctors and lawyers while going against good competiton. Not many top notch athletes are smart enough to get into Stanford.

The last time a story like this played out it was John Elway coming out of Stanford. The major difference being that Jimmy Clausen led his team to a bowl game.

I've never seen a draft "guru" in the mold of Mel Kiper hate on one single player the way McShay does Clausen. It's borderline politics, the way somebody might flame a political opponent.

I know they had a horrible run defense last year and that they lost a handful of games the past couple years due to poor game management on Weis' part.

In NDs 6 losses the offense put up point totals of:

34
27
21
22
30
38

The defense lost games for them.

I would absolutely love to see this kid with a defense to protect him (which he would have in time with Romeo) and to be able to be coached by Charlie for his pro career.

2009 425 289 68.0 3,722 28 4 161.4 59 -95 -1.6 3
2008 440 268 60.9 3,172 25 17 132.5 54 -73 -1.4 0
2007 245 138 56.3 1,254 7 6 103.9 62 -187 -3.0 2
Career 1110 695 62.6 8,148 60 27 137.2 175 -355 -2.0 5

That is how he progressed every year.

This kid is very coachable, has the tools, and will be a great pro if he falls into the right situation.

So hmmm... Jay Cutler must be going to the Hall of Fame also because he went to an incredibly great academic school like Elway and he also didn't get to play with NFL type WRs like Elway.

McD must be a fucking dumbass for getting rid of him.

So once QBs go to the NFL they're magically able to throw further and run faster? McShay is a dumbass.

He's referring to late bloomers like Tom Brady, whose build took a little longer to mature and fill out.

lets dissect the Broncos 1st round last year...

they drafted a RB that was less effective than Correll Buckhalter...a LB that managed 0 sacks...and traded their 2010 1st for a midget CB...

Suddenly I don't feel so bad about Tyson Jackson.

Knowshon led all rookies in rushing yards. Ayers will be starting this year instead of playing nickle all season like he did last year. Smith was a disappointment though.

I would much rather have our draft than what the Chiefs did last year.

Well lets take a look shall we.

Elway's career at Stanford = 1979–1982

Who he played with?

1st round RB - Darrin Nelson
1st round OT - Brian Holloway
3rd round TE - Chris Dressel
3rd round WR - Ken Margerum

Hey Knowshit Moron, what the fuck are you talking about? Notre Dame's defense is the reason ND lost so many games. If not for Clausen, I could recall at least 3 or 4 games that they should of lost.

Elway started hitting the weights somewhere around year 10. He learned that the extra mass helped protect against injury. I think he put on about 20 lbs.

I'm not at all sold on Clausen but it is annoying when anyone makes it their personal agenda to campaign against a player whom they have no way of knowing how he will pan out. It's like the people around here who want to proclaim with certainty that Bradford is going to be a bust in the face of his obvious skill set and highly regarded intangibles.

Expressing one's opinion or concerns is one thing but planting a flag and becoming personally invested in the future success or failure of another human being is kind of lame.
