I'm having a discussion of the best college basketball programs of all-time.
Would you kindly share your opinion of the Top 5 programs in NCAA history?

I'd now put Michigan State up there.

Tom Izzo is the best coach of the last 20 years.

Knowing absolutely nothing about basketball, Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, and UCLA spring to mind. Not sure who'd be fifth. Louisville? Marquette? (Is Marquette actually any good?)

I'm just mentioning programs that I hear about even though I'm not a basketball fan, but then that may be the best indicator of the top teams.

I agree. What Izzo has done this year has been amazing -- who knew they'd be final four without Lucas?

Where does Indiana rank all-time. They have a compelling resume.
In fact, I'm arguing on whether or not they deserve Top 5 consideration.

The question mark is the fifth team. They vary by era. Right now Michigan State looks like a good choice, though I currently am hating them over what they did to my Terps.

Indiana, Louisville and Syracuse would make my list with the nod to Indiana, despite the fact they've been down for a while.

Edit: Oops, I forgot UCLA. Sorry Indiana.

Indiana's won 5 titles. Although I don't think they've been to the Final Four quite as many times as teams like Duke and UNC. But I think the only teams with more than 5 are UCLA and Kentucky.

Indiana has 1600+ career wins, 8 Final Four appearances and 5 Nat'l Championships.

UK, KU, UNC, Duke, UCLA... Indiana would probably be 6th, considering they're one of 6 teams with more than 2 NCs. They're 11th in all time wins and 7th in FF appearances.

IMO, MSU isn't really in the discussion since 6/8 of their FF appearances are in the last 12 years.... and they've only won their conference 12 times? Is that right? Wow.

They were also the last program to have an undefeated team. What would hurt them to most people younger than 30 is that they've been to 1 Final Four in the last 20+ years. They had some great teams in the early 90's but couldn't get over the hump.

Yeah, I'm not sure MSU has been consistent enough from a historical standpoint. In recent times, definitely.

But they have been what's historically a fairly tough conference. I'll get shot in the face for saying that. But you're in a conference with Indiana, Ohio State, Purdue, Illinois, Michigan.

Excellent point.

Three of the top 20 winningest teams, all-time, come from the Big 10 conference.

Oklahoma State has six final fours, Georgetown has 5, Zona has 4, and Florida has 4.

Oklahoma State has 2 national titles. Off the other schools you have mentioned, the only other school w/ 2 national titles is Florida and UCONN. Both of which have just now recently became relevant. All those programs IMO are on off the same class, but I think I'd put Oklahoma State up there just because for some reason people don't see them as a basketball school despite what they have done over the course of the years.

If you want to be that guy and throw in a womens tean then you have to use Tenn which is about 100 miles better than U-Conn could ever be.

Man, if Izzo could recruit like Roy or Calipari - holy shit!

And I don't agree that KU is #1 overall BB program. We might be #1 tradition-wise, but as far as success, UK is obvioulsy the best. They can thank KU for Rupp, but the fact remains.

UCLA def. is up there with all their NC's, but I'm always weary putting them in the #1 slot because it all came in one era of CBB.

I'd probably say:

1. UK
2. UNC/KU
4. UCLA
5. Indiana
