View Full Version : Food and Drink I cooked an OSTRICH EGG for breakfast.

So, a couple of weeks ago we were in central California for a bike ride and rode past an ostrich farm. The sign said: "Gift shop - Eggs for sale" Well, how often do you get a chance to cook a freakin' ostrich egg?! So we went back and I bought one. It was $20.
The story is: they taste about the same as a chicken egg but are lighter, fluffier and a tad sweeter. It came with cracking instructions -- you basically poke a hole in the end with a hammer and screwdriver (the shell is hard and about 1/16" thick) then shake out the contents.
One ostrich egg equals about 20-24 chicken eggs.
Once you get it in the bowl and whip it up it's just like you cracked a helluva lot of regular eggs in there. We made scramble and omelets and French Toast for the kids. I wish I could say it was way more edgy than it was, but it was just pretty good. Plus my kids get a heck of a show n tell piece. :thumb:

One thing that I am curious about, is what exactly were you doing with the ostrich egg for the two weeks in between the time you purchased and when you cooked it?
Or do I even want to know?

Or do I even want to know?Sitting on it, trying to see if it would hatch.

If you could find a way to get them to hatch you could make a fortune. I'm sure the going rate for an ostrich has to be well over $20.

Ah hahahaha. I put it in the fridge. My friend was saying I would break it open and find a dead ostrich baby. I told him if I did I'd mail it to him for jinxing me.

Screw it!
I'm going to make a "beer can Emu" on the grill this weekend.
I've had emu eggs before. It seems like the lady used to make a hole like you did, and then they'd decorate the egg shell or something.

I don't think you could fit 20-24 chicken eggs inside that Ostrich egg, or does it equal the volume with the "fluffieness" factor?

Good looking omelet. Need to step it up on your cheese selection, though.

Do you know her? If so, please tell me you have video of her blowing the egg out of the shell with a straw.
