Congratulations to the Canadiens and their fans (or bandwagoners, whichever). The Pens had their opportunities in Games 4 and 6 with the lead...but couldn't hold the fort.

...now excuse me as I hunt down Marc-Andre Fleury.

There might be bandwagoners throughout Canada hopping on with Montreal, but everybody in that city lives and breathes that hockey team. It's not like any other Canadian city, which has a smattering of fans of every team, while generally having about a 65% share in favor of the local team. 95% of residents in the Montreal area are Habs fans. Maybe that used to be different with the Nordiques around, but it hasn't been the case for 15 years.

As opposed to the NBA, where you can pretty much guarantee the final 4 before the season starts. Oh boy, LA, Cleveland, Boston. Glad we played 82 games for that... And wasn't that first round riveting, look at all the upsets...

Oh wait.

Go Habs go!
Glad to see you got your name fixed, I was just checking up to see if I needed to change it, lol.

Haha nope, it's golden for now; though I kinda do WishIwasAnAvsFan... Duchene, Galiardi (Former Calgary Hitman), Anderson, Ryan Wilson, you guys are gonna have an amazing young team that's already way ahead of where everyone thought they'd be.

As opposed to my Flames... who are in for a few lonnnnnng years I fear.

An 8 seed will play either a 6 or 7 seed in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Awesome.

Yeah, but I think if Chicago gets in the Finals against Boston or Philly it could draw a pretty decent number on TV.

Flyers get a Power Play goal and lead 2-0 late in the 2nd period

If anyone is looking for me on Friday I'll be at Duke's Riverside sitting on the deck cheering my balls off drunk.

I am too, except for the fact that Buffalo lost. It's funny, though, I listen to radio out of Calgary and they talk alot of NHL. They keep saying that they wonder if Montreal's style and success is going to make teams start playing variations of the trap again as a sort of copycat.

That was one of the coolest games I've ever watched in all of sports. We were all out on an outside deck watching it at a tiki bar type setting. It started pouring rain and not one person went inside because they didn't want to miss any action.

It was the closest atmosphere to a college setting I've been in since, well, going to college.

Fucking Flyers are turning into the heart attack pack. Outstanding day!

On a side note: that was the first time in NHL history for a team to come back from an 0-3 deficit AND come back from 0-3 score deficit in game 7.

How crazy is it that the #7 and #8 are playing in the conference finals.....I just can't get over how weird that is.

I've always thought, mostly in hockey, that it is a slight advantage to be a low seed. Basically those teams have been in playoff mode for a few weeks prior to the actual playoffs, so they don't have to ramp up to it.
However, that typically is only good through the first round. So that takes nothing away from how remarkable this is.

I felt this before the series started, but Philadelphia is an absolutely horrid matchup for Montreal. Add to that Boucher getting hurt was probably the best thing to happen to the Flyers, Leighton is playing out of his mind right now. But the biggest thing is Pronger, Timonen, Coburn and Carle are simply dominating the Habs forwards and the Flyers are too deep and too quick, and Montreal simply can't cover them at the front of the net.

Chicago and Philadelphia will be one HELL of a finals though.

Yeah, it's thought to be bad juju. The idea is that you don't touch any trophy unless it's the Stanley Cup. It's kind of mixed in terms of actual practice though. Some hockey players are insanely superstitious, while others don't really care.

I'm torn in this series.

I'll always have a deep respect for Coach Q. Too bad Roman Turek fucked him out of his chance at a Cup in STL.

But he coaches for the fucking Blackhawks. But I respect the way they put that club together over the past half-decade. Hope we can do the same soon as well.

As far as the Flyers are concerned, I love rooting for a team that needed a shootout win on the last day of the season to even get into the playoffs, then win a series after being down 0-3 overall and 0-3 in Game 7 to come back and win.

Plus, unlike pretty much every hockey fan on Earth, I'm a HUGE Chris Pronger fan. I rooted for Edmonton back in 2006, I rooted for the Ducks a few years back, and I'm rooting for him now.

I guess I'll be happy either way, but would prefer a more competitive series and better officiating.

Puck stealing by Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger irks Chicago Blackhawks, adds edge to Cup finals

BY MICHAEL OBERNAUER
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Wednesday, June 2nd 2010, 4:00 AM

PHILADELPHIA - The Stanley Cup Finals between the Blackhawks and Flyers became so contentious in Game 2 that the sides began arguing over everything down to souvenirs.

The curious flashpoint in a championship series that has taken a couple games to sharpen its teeth became Flyer defenseman Chris Pronger's practice of retrieving and making off with the game puck following a Philadelphia loss. When he did so after Monday's 2-1 Chicago win that sent the Flyers back to Philly staring at a 2-0 hole in the series, Hawks winger Ben Eager - who might have wanted to keep the puck he shot over Michael Leighton for the decisive goal in the second-period - skated over for some words with the big Philly blueliner, who tossed a towel Eager's way before departing. Both players were given misconduct penalties at 20:00 of the third period.

"He's been picking up pucks after the game," Eager explained, "so just I told him he could keep it."

What did Pronger want with it? Let's just say he won't be sending it to the Hall of Fame.

"It's in the garbage," Pronger said, "where it belongs."

Maybe it's childish, maybe it's mind games, and maybe it's both. Whatever the case, it's a sign that the Cup Finals are developing just the snarl Philadelphia loves as the series shifts to Broad Street for Game 3 Wednesday night. Pronger's highly anticipated matchup with Dustin Byfuglien took a step up in physicality Monday night, while Daniel Carcillo's reappearance predictably provided a few flare-ups in a game that was far tighter and rougher than the opener.

Eager, an ex-Flyer, was involved in the early grappling, too, even getting a wave goodbye from Pronger as a linesman pulled him from a scrum, and an earful from Carcillo between the benches. Later, his message about petty theft was lost on Pronger, veteran of three Cup Finals.

"I couldn't hear him; I don't speak that language, whatever he was speaking," Pronger said. "I don't know, apparently it got him upset. So I guess it worked. I guess little things amuse little minds."

Pronger's press conferences have consistently provided a goofball element to the series, but of course, beneath the beef over who stole what, the Flyers take their deficit very seriously and are counting on home cooking and their season-long resilience to get them back into the series. Pronger, maintaining his pace of more than 30 minutes per game, has helped Philly hold the Hawks' top-liners to just one assist so far, but Chicago is winning the depth battle, and Philly coach Peter Laviolette Tuesday discussed plans to rein in the 35-year-old's ice time.

What Pronger does after the buzzer is his own business.

"I think it's kind of comical - if Chris Pronger wants the puck, then he can have it, as far as I'm concerned," Laviolette said. "What is it going to do? The Hawks? What added incentive do they have now? It's the playoffs. We're going to show up, we're going to compete like hell (tonight), I promise you that."

Is that all?

"We did not talk about who is going to steal the puck in Game 3," Laviolette said.

Eager is an idiot if he thinks that the puck that Pronger picked up at the end of the game - was the same puck that he scored with in the 2nd period. I'm sure they played with the same puck the entire game, with none ever going into the crowd.

Dumbfuck.

I liked this exchange with reporters as well:

Here’s the exchange between CSNPhilly.com and the Delco Times with Pronger:

What happened?

“I couldn’t hear him, I don’t speak gibberish,” said Pronger, who picked up a misconduct penalty at the very end and got into it with Eager.

“He’s been picking up pucks after the game and I just told him he can keep it,” Eager said minutes earlier, before Pronger spoke.

Where’s the puck, Pronger was asked.

“It’s in the garbage,” Pronger replied. “Where it belongs.”

You shot a towel at Eager when he complained?

“So what,” Pronger replied.

You’re collecting pucks now?

“Why not? What’s wrong? It’s sitting there. What else is gonna happen to it? It’s sitting there. Sure, why not. You got a problem with that?”

Are you gonna sell it on eBay?

“I don’t know. Apparently, it got him upset. So I guess it worked, didn’t it? It’s too bad. I guess little things amuse little minds.”

The puck stealing is towards the end, but the rest is comical, if you're a fan of the guy. I realize most people probably despise him, but I'm one of his biggest fans.

Much needed victory!

Want to know what I learned tonight? I have very little control over my life.

To start off with I'm on call this week and I'm praying no one calls because I have probably have one or two more beers than I should while watching the game. No one calls but still, I had no control over the situation.

Next a big behemoth nasty chick with the biggest natural tits I've ever seen is putting her arm around me and kissing me on the cheek every time I make a happy or sad gesture on what the Flyers pull on any given play. I basically had to view the whole game as a seminar during the 2nd period to not get hugged by Helga the Flyers Fan.

Third the game is finally over and I have to poop. I went for a jog earlier and it didn't happen for some reason. No problem? Nope. I'm arguing with my asshole the whole way home from the FLyers Game:

Me: were almost there, calm down!
Asshole: **** you, I have to shit
Me: we're here, i'm stepping out of the truck, hang on
Asshole: **** you, I have to shit (turtle head at this point)
Me: I'm opening the door, all we have to do is go up the steps and sit on the toilet!
Asshole: **** you, I'm shitting now pants or no pants

I'm sure you will all be happy to know I made it by a slim margin.

Go FUCKING Flyers!!!!

Not that I care all that much, but why all the Philadelphia love?

Here's a post of mine from the first or second night of the series:

As the series has played out, I'm definitely rooting for Philly.

To borrow from the late, great Herb Brooks, I think that Chicago has the better collection of talent. I think Philly has the better TEAM.

JMHO.

Leighton deserves to be pulled for Boucher, IMO.

The first goal wasn't his fault, as it deflected in off of Pronger's skate.

The other two were two of the weakest goals against I've seen in a regular game, much less Game 5 of the Stanley Cup fucking Finals.

Yes, Chicago is outplaying the Flyers. But it shouldn't be any worse than 1-0.

Niemi made crucial saves, while Leighton couldn't make the routine saves.

Two turning points of the game:

The HUGE save that Niemi made on Richards point blank in the 2nd period when the game was 4-2. A 4-3 score there makes this a completely different game, IMO.

The other is when Duncan Keith took out Briere's eye with a high stick, enough to need stitches, and it went uncalled. The major penalty that should have ensued with a 2 goal deficit and a lot of time left would have been huge.

Overall though, Niemi is carrying the Hawks.

Chicago can play average and win games because of him - see games 1 and 2, but Philly has to play near-perfect hockey to make up for Leighton.

Hopefully we'll be treated to a 7th game, regardless of who wins it.

Funny headline of the day: Pronger not discussing illustration of him in skirt

http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2010/0608/chi_e_pronger-skirt01_300.jpg

The article is quite PC for espn... oh, the outrage against women's hockey.

http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/nhl/news/story?id=5264895
Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger didn't feel like discussing an altered picture of him wearing a figure skating skirt that was an insert in Tuesday's edition of the Chicago Tribune.

A headline on the half-page poster read: "Chrissy Pronger," and the subhead was "Looks like Tarzan, skates like Jane."

Pronger was asked about it during a media session Tuesday in Philadelphia, where the Flyers will try to even the Stanley Cup finals against the Chicago Blackhawks with Game 6 on Wednesday.

"I don't read what you guys write. Good or bad," Pronger said.

When it was pointed out that the newspaper had an interesting picture of him, Pronger still wouldn't take the bait.

"Next question," he responded.

The reporter continued "in a figure skating dress," and Pronger replied: "Next question." When the reporter said "and I was just wondering," Pronger again said: "Next question."

The Flyers defenseman was asked if he gets motivated by the reaction he gets in Chicago, whether it motivates him more than other places.

"I really couldn't care, to be honest with you," Pronger said. "I'm worried about playing the game."

Others weren't so dismissive of the poster.

"I'd like to see that editor out on skates. I'll take them one-on-one on the ice any day," three-time Olympic medalist Angela Ruggiero told The Associated Press. "They obviously have never seen women's hockey and are living in the dark ages."

Ruggiero found out about the poster via Twitter and expressed disappointment and anger that such demeaning portrayals of women and hockey are still being made.

"For her and others who took offense, I apologize. No qualifiers, I'm sorry," Chicago Tribune sports editor Mike Kellams said in an e-mail. "We were just having a little fun with a guy who has come to personify all that has gotten under the collective skin of Blackhawks fans. Pronger is talented that way. And we were trying to connect to that emotion in a fun way.

"I grew up in Indiana and came to hockey as an adult. Ruggiero vs. me on the rink would be no contest. I know that from what she and her team did at the Vancouver Olympics."

Ruggiero will be in Bensenville, Ill., later this month for the Angela Ruggiero Girls Hockey School, but said she won't be buying the Chicago Tribune and plans to send an e-mail voicing her displeasure.

"Some people are still ignorant," Ruggiero said. "Our sport doesn't get a lot of exposure, so you have to see us play in the world championships or the Olympics to see what the highest caliber of women's hockey is.

"Obviously, it's offensive. It's disappointing more than anything. I grew up playing with boys, trained with NHL players. I would go head-to-head with Pronger any day I could."

Pronger has been an antagonizing force in the Stanley Cup finals against the Blackhawks, but he had the worst game of his career Sunday night when the Flyers lost 7-4.

Pronger, who often logs over 30 minutes of ice time, had a minus-5 rating and was on the ice for all but one of Chicago's goals. He sat in the penalty box when the other was scored.

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said he heard about the poster, but declined to comment.

The Tribune's website featured countless remarks -- both pro and con -- that ranged from calling the poster "stupid, juvenile and offensive, and an embarrassment to journalists everywhere" to suggesting it is "just the spark" the Blackhawks need for a Game 6 victory.

"I don't suppose this will move anyone on either side to change their minds about the image," Kellams said. "Some seem to hate it more than anything in life. Others think it's funny. I figure most folks don't care either way. But it's no more complicated than this: We were just trying to have a little fun. That's really it. Honest."

Pretty juvenile, but whatever.

Probably not a good idea by the Tribune to get Pronger any more fired up than he'd already be after Sunday's performance.

I'm going to laugh my ass off if the Flyers come back to win the series, and Pronger wins the Conn Smythe.

Yeah, that's pretty stupid. Fairly typical for the Tribune, too. If Philadelphia comes back to win the series, Pronger will probably autograph a thousand of them and drop them out of a plane over Chicago.

Funny, I was just about to post that he'd take out a full page ad in the Trib with a pic of him in the skirt with the Cup and the Conn Smythe.

Eh, he was a -5 Sunday night and he's facing elimination at home, and will end up having 3 days to think about it... I don't think a picture will make a difference.

I expect him and Leighton to bounce back, so it should go 7... I didn't see game 2, so with these 6-5 and 7-4 games, I'd like to see both teams clamp down and play some defense.

Philly should have won Game 2, IMO.

Leighton killed them, they caught some bad breaks/bounces/officiating and Niemi made the big saves when he had to.

I think it will go 7 as well, as long as Leighton doesn't go full retard again.

Screw the Flyer's.

It's been 50 years since Chicago has won the cup. We should all look at this as inspiration for the Chief's.

Cheap A** call on Chicago but they still score...2-2.

This is a great game.

well no matter what happens the rest of this series one thing is clear, Leighton isn't the answer for the Flyers at goal tender. He has allowed way to many soft goals in this series

I could say the same thing for Niemi; of all the Finnish goalies, Kiprusoff, Backstrom or Rask he is not...

And to think, the Flyers likely could've had Jaroslav Halak at the deadline for not that much. Maybe they give up JvR or something. Take this Flyer team, add Halak, subtract JVR, and somehow this seems like it should be a 3-2 series lead for Philly.

Finally got to a computer.

Is it just me, or is the officiating overshadowing this game?

The only good call made was the cross-check at the end of the 2nd on Philly.

The rest were ticky-tack plays that are made 10x a game. This is Game 6 of the SCF, FFS. Let the players decide it.

The high sticking call on Hartnell and the GI on Hossa were especially pathetic calls.

15:00 minute mark of the 3rd and I just have this weird gut feeling that Leighton's going to fold, Chicago will take a 4-2 lead, and win 5-2 or 5-3.

I hope I'm wrong.

Barring a major mistake by Chicago or Niemi specifically, Philly's in deep shit.

Chicago, like everyone before them in this position, will be able to grab, interfere, cross-check, etc without repercussion because the refs always swallow their whistles late in a potentially clinching game.

Again, I hope I'm wrong.

Sadly, that weak-ass goal Leighton allowed from a poor angle is the difference.

Hartnell got his stick on that, or I think it was going wide.

What a play.

Hartnell's been a monster tonight.
