Just for fun, let's see how long it takes for people to answer the following questions. I just sent off a report analyzing this.

1. Of the 50 states plus DC (51 total entities), in how many are Mexicans the largest foreign-born population by nationality?

2. Name the states where Mexicans are NOT the largest foreign-born population.

3. In those states, name the nationality that IS the largest.

I'll give you hints as we go. Unless of course no one plays, in which case I will leave chiefsplanet in shame.

DaFace isn't allowed to play since he knows.

Answers are below.

There are 18 of the 51 states/districts where Mexicans are NOT the largest foreign population. They are:
AK, HI - Philippines
FL - Cuba
ME, NH, ND, MT, VT - Canada
MA - Brazil
NJ, PA - India
CT - Jamaica
NY, RI - Dominican Republic
VA, MD, DC - El Salvador
WV - Germany

1. Of the 50 states plus DC (51 total entities), in how many are Mexicans the largest foreign-born population by nationality?

I'd say around 10.

2. Name the states where Mexicans are NOT the largest foreign-born population.

All but New York, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, New York, Colorado, Washington and Oregon.

3. In those states, name the nationality that IS the largest.

American

I'll give you hints as we go. Unless of course no one plays, in which case I will leave chiefsplanet in shame.

Higher on Question 1.

You're right on CA, AZ, NM, TX, CO, WA, and OR. Wrong on NY.

Oh, and on Q3, "foreign nationality".

Higher on Question 1.

I won't go too much higher, I'll say 13.

You're right on CA, AZ, NM, TX, CO, WA, and OR. Wrong on NY.

Eh, have to think about that one more.

Oh, and on Q3, "foreign nationality".

Indian (as in India)

Correct. We now have NY and HI as non-Mexico places.

Lower.

Rain Man

Higher than 13.

And we'll guess the others by state, though I'll state that India is the third-largest source of foreign-born residents.

Higher.

ClevelandBronco

Lower.

I'll guess at this another way.

Some states with smaller Mexican-born immigrant populations:

New York
Hawaii

Washington
New Jersey
Michigan
Massachusetts
Connecticut
Rhode Island
Maine

Rain Man

1 - 41
2 - Alaska, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, Vermont
3 - Canadian, Cuban, Japanese, Canadian, Canadian, Russian, Canadian, Puerto Rican, Canadian, Canadian

1. Lower.

2. You can add AK, FL, ME, MA, NH, NJ, ND, and VT to the non-Mexico list. Nice work. ID is a Mexico state.

3. AK - no on Canada
FL - YES on Cuba
HI - No on Japan
ME - YES on Canada
MA - No on Russia
NH - YES on Canada
NJ - No on Puerto Rico (which doesn't count as foreign-born since it's a territory)
ND - YES on Canada
VT - YES on Canada

Rain Man
04-14-2010, 11:45 AM
Right now, we know it's higher than 23 and lower than 46, and we have

MA - ?
NJ - ?

This stuff fascinates me, and I like the geographic convergences. I never would've guessed the El Salvadoran thing in the mid-Atlantic area, and the Caribbean influx in New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. And the Brazil thing is way out of left field in Massachusetts.

I figured that Alaska would get guessed earlier since Filipinos are some enormous proportion of ship crews.

I called my son who lives in Maryland and works with a couple of immigrant guys. They're both from El Salvador. He told me that a large section of Baltimore is now all latin. Wasn't that way 10 years ago.

My nanny and housekeeper is from El Salvador but she's an American citizen (since she was three).

My wife is second generation Filipina and one of her father's first jobs in the early 70's was working at a cannery in Alaska (while her mother raised her in California).

There are Filipinos all up and down the West Coast. On the whole, they're great people and culturally, a lot of fun to hang out with because they're partiers and gamblers.

Fun times.
