This pissed me off so much I just had to post about it

So, there is a local store near my home that i shop at to buy my beer, snacks etc. They also accept EBT. Every morning i go there to pick up whatever i may need for the day (O.J, munchies for lunch etc). And everyday, there is an old fat woman there who buys about 20 bucks worth of lottery tickets. Everyday. She is always there.

She doesn't use cash to buy these tickets. She uses her EBT. Yes. Her government EBT to buy these lottery tickets on a daily basis.

Not only that, but after talking to the store attendant, not only does she buy them in the morning, but she also comes back periodically throughout the day to purchase more.

Pisses me off.....

Exactly. Most states have reasonable guidelines as to what assistance can be spent on. Lottery tickets is not and should not be one of them. Is it really the state allowing this or are the tickets coded as something other than lottery tickets when they're rung up?

Yeah...pretty much. There is a program out here called WIC, I believe to be founded and supported by SDSU, which is pretty cool. (Women-Infants-Children).

Their goal is to provide pregnant women and children a nutritious diet by supplying them with eggs, cheese, milk, peanut butter etc for those who needed assistance.

My dad tried to enroll in this program for me. That way we could always have milk and cheese and veggies.

They turned us down. Why? Because he's a man. I couldn't get the benefits as a 10 yr old boy because I had a single father rather than a single mother.

It has since changed...but was pretty ****ed at the time.

That's what my dad was saying at the time. He ended up saying, "fuck 'em" because 147 dollars wasn't worth the hassel and as soon as he found a job he wouldn't receive shit anymore anyhow. So, we never actually even got a check.

As fucked up and difficult as he made my life....I still have some sort of weird respect for him. For reasons just like i stated above. I was homeless for most my childhood....But at least i can say that I was never on Welfare officially....we never had to pan-handle or beg for anything. We were always cleaned and showered and for the most part he always found ways to get food.

So a kid should suffer because he chose to be born into a shitty situation?

That's how that works, right?

I'm with you on the welfare thing, a lot don't deserve it, but I don't think the future would be too much brighter if these kids were left to depend on their deadbeat parents to totally support them on their own.

Maybe some kind of birth control for assistance program would keep these losers from shitting out more kids.

What world are you living in? Minimum wage in most states doesn't even approach $10 an hour. New York is one of the more generous states and the minimum wage there is only $7.25 an hour.

That said, business has been dealing the cards for some time now. Keeping wages down is part of the equation. That is a major reason that 100% employment will never be a reality. It isn't just because people are too lazy to work. It's also because competition for jobs helps keep wages down.

By keeping the unemployed, underemployed, and underpaid off the streets and from starving, welfare helps supplement desirable unemployment for the sake of keeping wages down. The jobs market may be the only area in which the phony Wall Street economy still believes in true supply and demand.

We're kinda going off on a tangent here and this may result in the thread going to DC, but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this is why our gov't has done nothing about illegal immigration. I agree wholeheartedly. We need immigration policy that is fair to everyone instead of merely being a tool for flooding the labor market and suppressing wages. It's all about the corporate establishment and Wall Street's bottom line. I'm one liberal that supports tighter borders.

I'll tell you, I'm much more concerned with large corporations taking bailout funds and then spending 400k on weekend retreats for the very same ****ers that put us in this financial position as a country. Hell, as a world.

I've never understood all of the energy focused on poor people that account for a drop in the bucket, while turning a blind eye to the people who are really out there robbing us blind.Robbing us blind?

The taxes those corporations pay are what keeps this country afloat, even if they do use every slimy loophole they can to pad their own pockets. At least corporate greed has some degree of trickle down.

We should take all the poor people, round them up, and put them on trains. Then, send the trains to these old army camps, and make these people work long and hard, and cut their food intake down until they lose lots of weight and appreciate that hard work makes you healthy. And have them make things like bullets and land mines and things, that we can use to protect our freedom from those who are trying to take our country away. And then we should cut taxes on the people who own the company that makes bullets and land mines, because that way they'll re-invest and build more camps where we can make more bullets. And while we're at it, we can perform medical experiements on some of them, and deny health care to the rest of them, because they're just here for a handout anyway.

Sorry, I was channeling Glenn Beck there for a minute.

Just enough to keep everyone getting up and going in to slave away for them every day. All so they can't quite pay their bills and stay pissed off at the free loaders.

Those people may be dirt poor, and have next to nothing, but they're not slaves. And that's what I think it comes down too. Most people hate their jobs but they get off their asses everyday and go in anyways. They either have a family to support, or car payments to make, or whatever. Why shouldn't everyone have to do it, right?

Just remember, you don't have to either.

I was just talking about people on welfare. But, you bring up a good point. The general public is starting to learn how to deal with taxes the way these corporations have been dealing with them for years.

I was at a client of mine the other day(Prime Meat Company) and there was a dude I went to school with there who was a deadbeat then and is still today. What chapped my ass is that somehow he was driving a nicer vehicle than I and paying for $150 in top quality meat with an EBT card.

Sure he was at least using it for food but damn I own my own business and can't afford to regularly eat Angus beef.

Well that wasn't exactly my point, it's that I have to think a good number of those people are getting some type of public assistance. Although the aforementioned wage suppression certainly factors into it as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend welfare recipients. I just think our focus and energy should be spent in more productive places. Like corporate greed, thievery, and the slavery that has been created in the last 30 years or so.

Remember when your Dad could go to work for 40 hours a week and afford a home for your mother to raise you in? Not anymore. Now in many cases 2 incomes can't get it done. Why is that?

I have to say I've been busting my ass for 20 years now with my own business and yes I've done okay and had a decent run but it's shit like this and everything else I see going on around me that has me to thinking it's time to say WTF and go take my place in the benefits line.

My mrs has RA and my focking health isurance is through the roof but yet my lil bro tells me at his former job they had a convicted murderer serving life with RA and the state made sure he had his medicine every week.

It's wage depression. Three huge factors have caused it.

1. Women entering the workforce
2. Sending jobs overseas
3. Illegal immigration

Really only #3 is the fault of the gov't.

She had the balls to tell me that she thought it was "OK" for her to work parttime and collect foodstamps.

I told her over my dead body. My parents didnt raise me like that and id be fucked if we were goin to.

I used to work at a convenience store many years ago and before EBT cards. I once saw a family get out of a Mercedes and the woman (mom?) hand each kid (there were about 5 or 6 of them) a $1 food stamp. They each proceeded to get a 5 cent piece of gum and walk up to the register. Needless to say, I wasn't about to allow that shit. After arguing with them, they finally gave up and left.

Bullshit, this won't end until people stop ****ing having children they can't pay for. Period.

That too.

That said, I'm glad a bunch of douchebags in the 90's got new houses, cars, shit they couldn't afford, and were living WAY beyond their means on credit and jacked loans/mortgages.

That really helped a lot. Douchebags.

When I worked as a checker in a grocery store (back in '83), I would see that, too (except the Mercedes part). A whole string of kids buying 5 cent gum and handing Mom the change. Then she would come back and buy cigarettes with a handful of change.

I would have been fired had I said something, though.

There has to be some kind of fraud on the store's behalf. EBT isn't supposed to be used on lotto or smokes or alcohol.

Yeah. The register should flag it and not allow it anyways, even if the cashier overlooked it.

this lady here in Boston in my neighborhood spends about $400 per week on scratch tickets. She manages to get money from other neighbors to feed her habbit. When her gov't check comes in every friday it's straight to the corner store to spend all of it on scratch tickets. I've seen her try to return them a couple of times, she tried to say that the clerk gave her the bad ones...rofl. She took some of my grandma's items after she died that had sentimental value, my mom wanted them back but she already pwnd them. fucking stupid russian biotch

I started a thread here one time about this subject and was attacked. Here in Wichita Ks welfare is on a Vision card. I stated that it pissed me off when I went to Quik Trip and watched people pay with a poor card and get into a fancy SUV I could not begin to make the payments on. Some known clown defenders here raged that I was full of shit about Vision cards being welfare  I stop by a place called Papa Murphys to pick up pizza often and they have a huge sign saying "We accept EBT" I had no idea that is some sort of code word for food stamps or welfare card nowdays. I was in there one night and it was slow and I asked the manager about this EBTsign. He told me welfare sales beat cash sales city wide  Sadly many people have no honor~
