Give me your ideas and I'll start a poll to select the single best smell in the world. I'll probably do it tournament style.

I'll start with the smell of freshly baked bread.

Sawdust

See this and raise you 'spring garage'

That unique mix of sawdust, grass clippings and motor oil. Makes you glad to be alive and you feel like king of the world. For it's effect on your mood, there's no better.

For pure odor purposes, I'm thinking a nice smoked brisket (w/ hickory and applewood smoke w/ a garlic rub over the dry rub) being brought into the house to rest.

A cut alfalfa field

the latter two being triggers that remind me of my Grandpa's dairy farm in the summer growing up. And with a random observation, the smell of hot and sour soup at a chinese restaraunt always reminds me of alfalfa silage as well.

I obviously need to go sniff an alfalfa field at some point.

Yup, but a cut one. Once you start seeing the purple flowers on an alfalfa field, it is getting time for it to be cut. First the smell of when it is cut, then the smell a day later once it has dried, and then the smell of money as a kid when I got to haul 5000 bales of hay in a day at $.07 a bale.

Another to add is a freshly worked field, smelled that yesterday when I drove by a field they were running anhydrous (the big white tanks that meth heads like to steal sometimes) and got the smell of the fresh dirt. A little of the anhydrous mixed in, but that is a nice smell as well to me as long as it isn't in excess, then it just takes your breath away and makes your nose run.

The smell of a patch of trees from a treestand in the fall.

The smell of a pasture in early spring in full camo.

The smell of the inside of a tackle box

You notice how everyone makes sure they put "clean vag" instead of just vag?

I expect one or two of you have smelled dirty vag before. You know, the smell of a vag after she's been working all day in the heat, had 2 taco bell bean burritos for lunch and just started ragging.
Hey, at least she's not knocked up.

The desert in the summer, especially after a rain, smells of creosote, sage and mesquite. It is an amazing smell that I wish I could bottle and share. My backyard after a summer rain is one of the most relaxing places I've ever been.

In the city the main scents are smog, car exhaust, illegal alien sweat and baking concrete.

An aroma most midwesterners have never experienced, one that makes me swoon, is the smell of Maryland steamed blue crabs. It's a seafood smell mixed with a bunch of different spices that make up the crab seasoning and the steaming liquid, usually beer or vinegar or both. I just can't begin to describe what a great smell that is.

To avoid that scenario, I'm leaning more toward an Olympic sprinting type of tournament. We'll run in groups of 8 or 10, and the top half move to the next round.

My challenge is going to documenting all of these in a list. This thread exceeded my wildest expectations.

Yes, I think I quit liking the smell of gas when I was 7. I had my own little lawn mowing business, owned 3 mowers. Tried to syphon gas out of one into the other, swallowed half a pint or so. Burped gasoline for the next 3 days.
Never syphoned again.

I have the Wonder Bread Plant in Lenexa just down the street from me. When the wind is from the south, I can smell the bread baking. Also, downtown you can smell the Folgers Coffee plant percolating. Both are amazingly wonderful.

Folgers may be going away, they're threatening to close the downtown plant. People are up in arms.

When I was in junior high school we took a field trip to the Wonder Bread factory and went on a tour. It was one of my favorite field trips ever. It was the first time I ever saw anything mass produced and at the end of the tour they gave us each a pint-sized loaf of bread which seemed cool to me at the time.

When I was in junior high we took a field trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania. That town smells good.

Another town that smells good, even from a few miles away, is Hanover, Pennsylvania, where they make Utz and Snyder's chips and pretzels.

I remember the way Kansas City smelled back in the 60's. That was not so good.
