View Full Version : Life Totally Dumbstruck....

Mr. Kotter
04-30-2010, 11:45 AM
I was served a great big serving of humility today.... I was honored today, totally unexpectedly: I was honored as our school's "teacher of the year." In a school of 2100, with a staff of 130...it's something I'd never seriously thought about (despite a runner-up finish in a different sort of statewide competition a few years back--one base more on scholarship; this award is totally different...voted on by teachers, staff, parents, and students.)

I honestly don't mean this to toot my own horn, because I was honestly dumbstruck. In case you hadn't noticed, I have a penchant for ruffling feathers and speaking my mind, which inevitably leads to ticking some folks off....

Honestly, this is the kind thing I never really expected. To me, it's "political" enough and enough of a popularity contest of sorts....that a loose-cannon like me isn't going to be among the first to be considered. Anyway, I was really surprised.

But tonight, I'll have to hoist a few in celebration. Have a good weekend folks. :toast:

Obviously, Taco John was right. It's a shame that a government teacher such as yourself knows nothing about government.

In fact, you know so little you were awarded teacher of the year.

Congratulations! That's a great honor, and the school is fortunate to have a teacher like you who knows how to copy and forge voting ballots. And teach well on top of it.

This deserves a song.

Welcome back, your dreams were your ticket out
Welcome back, to that same old place that you laughed about
Well the names have all changed since you hung around
But those dreams have remained and they've turned around
Who'd have thought they'd lead ya
(who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back

I think we're all pretty dumbstruck.

But you know, once you've been there long enough, you're pretty much obligated to get it.

Nice job, Mr. Kotter.

But I don't think "humility" is what you got today. Humility is like when I look down at a paper I had written for a class and it says C- on it and then I realize I'm not so smart after all.

In our district...this particular award usually goes to one of two people: people nearing retirement, or total brown-nosers. I'm neither. Which is why I was dumbstruck.

There are at least 20-30 other folks that, in my mind, are as or more deserving. THAT is what I mean by humility. It's not the first definition; but it is in the sense of the relativity to others whom I respect.

2 : reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference or submission (to my equally deserving colleagues.)

Well, perhaps it's from MY perspective....but I'd suggest there are many more GOOD teachers than the critics would like to believe; yes, still far too many bad ones....but it's not nearly as bleak as some would believe.

Way to go kotter if you had been trying you would have fell short. I raise a beer to you and drink to celebrate your new found glory.

Not unless it's above board, the other teach is game, and we make a swap or something like that. Once in awhile something like that, yeah. This place is an escape for me. Some still ain't figured out what that means, I guess; most seem to get it though.
