I am sure you aren't aware of my family's histry with Salsa. I just can't believe people are so inconsiderate when it comes to shit like this. Especially on Cinco De Mayo (Mexican Independence day). I had a Uncle. Salsa Sanchez....who grew up a poor mexican black man on a farm northwest atchison. He was retarded, but I will be damn if he couldn't squash veggies and sometimes barn animals. One day he came home and he asked out his future wife. Chaquita Mc'duals. The proud bride of a proud irish mexican couple from Mexico Missouri. One day I came home to find them in the throws of passion outside the bar and infront of the grasshopper riding lawnmowerwith 90 degree turning radious. We fired salsa when we bought the 39 dollar salsa maker from a kiosk at the mall. and Salsa Killed himself.

Yeah, I was all ready to support small business and then saw that the price of shipping and handling was more than the $5 jar of salsa itself was.

Sorry. I like to support small business, but $13 for a jar of salsa shipped to my door is a little more than I'm willing to throw down.

This. She needs to up the size. Big time. While lowering SH, and it still better be damn good orgasmic salsa.

Yeah some method to order more jars or price/shipping incentive for ordering more quantity would be a good suggestion.

Also it looks like the website may still be under construction but the info on "About Us" is the same as "Home". Another suggestion is a larger picture of the jars so you can see more of that the salsa looks like.

I can go to the grocery store and by all kinds of good salsa for $1.99 and if I go to a Mexican market, it's even better for the same price.

I haven't been there in quite a while but I imagine the selection of salsa is hardly the same in MO as it is in your area. $5 a jar is pretty much the going rate around Denver for the locally made premium variety and we typically at least have an adequate selection of Mexican grocer goods in the local grocery stores.

If I am trying to push salsa right now. It isn't online. I would have an online presence but I wouldn't really be trying to sell it directly online. The amount of people that would go out of their way to buy would be too small to want to spend that much time trying to attract.

I am doing what I can to build up the product and presenting it in some manner that is a differentiator.

Salsa is everywhere...and a lot of people make their own. I would try to use my website to show the potential visitor that I know a shit ton more about salsa than they do. Be seen as a resource.

Also work harder to build up the places it is sold and get people to buy it there. You are going to grow from people buying it in the stores.

Talk more about the salsa...how you came to create the business. Make a compelling story that people can connect with and then send them to the stores to buy it or have them get in the ear of their neighborhood store that doesn't have it.

|Zach|
05-05-2010, 10:31 PM
Here is the nice thing. If you are not packaging it that shit is pretty cheap to make.

Flood your area with it...I would attach myself to events. Offer free salsa and chips to some good sized events and just set up shot. People try it and like it you are right there to sell a bottle. There is no middle man.

I would attach myself to anything that would let me put my product and brand front and center. It doesn't cost that much to put chips and salsa you make out there...each bottle sold would make it up pretty fast. Meanwhile people recognize the product and if you are likeable they want to support it.

Its like...wow I see Libby and Libbys Salsa everywhere. You are doing product marketing and brand marketing at the same time. In other words...you would be selling the salsa as well as creating a situation where when people in the area think of salsa they think of you. Thats big.

Flood your area with salsa.

This is very good marketing advice. You should also look into locally sourced ingredients, as this is a huge trend right now. Go hyperlocal, and forget the online sales. As Zach pointed out, you need to develop your brand/image a little further. Come up with a story that's interesting and that creates some buzz. Get a twitter account and connect with other local KC people. Get a FB account. Tap into social media. There are other people out there that can help you out more with this, but this is a side interest of mine.

I hope this lady got some decent advice in this thread

Yeah, and I hope the Chiefs win a superbowl in my lifetime. Neither one is very likely.

This is very good marketing advice. You should also look into locally sourced ingredients, as this is a huge trend right now.

I have a few friends in CA that are all about the Slow Food trend.

I started a pickled veggie company with a few buddies a few months ago and it is taking off like crazy. They key for us has been to hot the local stores pretty hard and look for unique avenues of distribution. For example, we purchased a vendor booth (very inexpensive) at the great american bbq and will sell them there. We do tastings at some of the stores we are in, and that gets the public to try the product. If it is good and people try it, they will like it and they will buy it. We have found this to be the biggest marketing tool for us. For example, shw might want to contact a store like whole foods which likes to carry local vendors whenever possible. Set up a tasting/sampling and feature one of their most popular chip brands. You may be suprised to find that 4 or 5 cases will get sold that day and the store will be thrilled to carry your product. People love to sample free stuff. BTW, we are doing a tastiing at Olive or Twist tonight in Liberty. A local winery is featured and they have invited us to pair with a few of the bloody mary mixes (for our pickled bloody mary garnish). If she is kc based, have her stop by to see how it works. We will be there about 6 to 9pm.
