I went with Chinese male because even if my life is tough working on the railroad I've got a pretty good chance of scoring with an Asian chick. Plus, I've always wanted to learn to speak Chinese.

On the topic of quality of life, none of them had a really easy road. I was tempted to go with Native American female because they probably still had some semblance of their pre-white lifestyle, more so than the men did. But in 1880 I would think that Indians were probably (rightfully) a pretty angry and bitter group of people, and I don't need that kind of negative energy. Blacks? Maybe in the north or the west you could give it a go. I watched the first part of some American history documentary that mentioned whaling as an occupation where blacks thrived and got very equal treatment, but at the same time your odds of leading a fun life as a black probably weren't all that high. Same with Chinese probably, but I think they could at least make their own way a little more than the others.

I wouldn't want to be a minority in any country in 1880, but in the US I'm guessing Chinese just because I don't know for certain that they were viewed negatively by nearly all whites at the time but I do know that about the other two.

A hot looking American Indian female could probably find a white frontiersman type to marry and lead a decent life, but who wants to be a girl? Not me.

I picked black man. Slavery has just been ended so the future is bright relatively speaking and there are places where you can live your life and avoid the KKK for the most part. I think I might check out whaling, for example. (I saw that history channel(?) show too).
