I posted this morning a report from the Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher that LB Mike Vrabel would be attending the voluntary portion of OTAs, which begin today.

Well, here's another surprise from the Star's Kent Babb: Brian Waters is in attendance as well.

Last year both players worked out on their own until the mandatory minicamp in June.

The lone Chief not on the field is Jarrad Page.

Page has yet to sign his tender but, as I've said before, I don't think that's too big of a deal. He was also the last to sign his tender in 2009 not doing so until May 29th.

So, (almost) all present and accounted for. Not a bad start, right?

I'm glad he showed. Having the starting O-line working together has to help with chemistry over the long haul.

He was voted to the Pro Bowl by his peers. Furthermore, he was very high in the All-Pro voting, although he ultimately failed to make that team.

Brian Waters played at a high level in 2008. Unfortunately at age 33, like many who have played for 10 years in the NFL, his body began to breakdown and he had a subpar year in 2009.

He's nothing more than a backup at this point.

Over the past few weeks, we've been making an assumption that LB Mike Vrabel (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/1709/Mike_Vrabel) will not attend the voluntary portions of the Chiefs (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/KAN) Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

Turns out, we were wrong (http://www.kansascity.com/2010/05/16/1950078/vrabel-comfortable-as-chiefs-start.html). Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports Vrabel plans on attending all the OTAs.

"I’m looking forward to being there and getting back to work," Vrabel said. "I told Todd (Haley) I plan to be at all of the (practices) and the minicamp. It’s the exact same schedule I had for my last seven years in New England."

The minicamp would be the lone mandatory camp the Chiefs will conduct in June.

Vrabel says last year, with all the change going on, he "wasn't in a big hurry" to get to Kansas City.

"Once I got there," he told Teicher, "and realized the type of people we had around and the type of people they wanted to bring in, it was fine."
Teicher reports Vrabel is also feeling a "sense of urgency" this season because, at his age, you're lucky to be in the NFL.

"When you turn 34 in the National Football League, you’re lucky to still have a job," Vrabel said. "So it’s closer to the end than it is to the beginning for me. I fully intend to put everything into this season and then I’ll evaluate things at the end of the season, I hope at the end of this season I’m able to do it again. If I’m not, then that will be it."

The only man missing was S Jarrad Page. As a restricted free agent, Page has not yet signed his tender offer and thus can’t take part in the workout without signing an injury waiver. Head coach Todd Haley declined to talk about Page and his absence, preferring to “talk about the guys that are here.”

Hard to disagree with those who say his play has slipped and he could go downhill quick, but his attitude is much different from last year and he seems upbeat. Might have something to do with all of the competition on the OL now.

Really? I don't see the problem with this. He's going to be great regardless of which safety position they put him at. I don't think Morgan's the answer. I don't think Page is the answer, but if he's our starter, he belongs at the Free. I'm still curious about Kendrick Lewis, who'd also play at the Free. And I don't think we can rule out one of our corners, whether Leggett or Washington, moving over to the Free. I think i remembered they experimented a bit with those two late in the season.

If Berry's our SS he'd be the QB of the defense. Fine with me.

You've got one of the most multi-dimensional safeties to ever come out of the draft and you're going to put him in a position to play one-dimensionally in Center field?

The Strong Safety is the leader of the defense, a guy who absolutely has to be versatile, and can line up all over the field. A free safety can be any coverage guy who can play deep, has speed, and can play deep all the time. A much, much, much easier skill set to find.

A Strong Safety is a hell of a lot more important than Free Safety. I understand your point about injury history, but if we're using a #5 pick on a Safety, I want him to be the leader of this defense who gets to use every last bit of his talents, not a guy whose job is to act as the last line of defense.

The Strong Safety is easily the more important position of the two. The free safety's job is to cover and play center field. The strong safety has to be able to both hit and cover. It's rare you find a guy who does both really well. When you find that guy, it's a tremendous waste of talent to not use him in that way.

I want to put him in the position where he can make the most impact. I understand your point that he becomes more of an injury risk, but that's the risk I'm willing to take.

Because if you're talking about best use of his skill set, there isn't a shred of a doubt that he belongs at Strong Safety.
