The Chiefs (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/KAN) on Monday announced they had signed two players that participated in the Chiefs rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.

Akron DB Andre Jones (5'11", 180 pounds) and Kansas State DL Jeffrey Fitzgerald (6'4", 280 pounds) are now Chiefs. Jones is a do-it-all defensive back and returner who has experience on the offensive side of the ball. Fitzgerald should be a familiar name to a lot of folks in the Kansas City area.

Those two are the second and third players signed by the Chiefs that participated in the rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. Notre Dame WR David Grimes (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/109961/David_Grimes) is the first.

The Chiefs also successfully put in a waiver claim on TE Leroy Banks (6'3", 243 pounds). He originally signed with the Falcons (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/ATL) shortly after the draft as an undrafted free agent before being released. The connection here could be Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff and Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.

This puts the Chiefs roster at 85 players. The maximum is 80 players but the seven draft picks and S Jarrad Page (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2390/Jarrad_Page) are not technically signed yet so they don't count towards that 80 number.

Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com has the rundown on the new players. (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/article-2/Insider-Blog-Chiefs-Add-Three-Just-Before-OTAs/c8ccd592-2b18-4348-80ad-20e68a6f7f0f)

Three new faces (one being a local college player) will join the Chiefs for Monday's OTA

All three moves were ones of addition and each involves undrafted rookies.

Kansas City was awarded a waiver claim placed on TE Leroy Banks (Atlanta) and signed of two rookie free agents – DB Andre Jones (Arkon) and DL Jeffrey Fitzgerald (Kansas State). Banks was also an undrafted free agent (Southern Miss), originally signing with the Falcons shortly after the draft concluded in April.

Both Jones and Fitzgerald took part in the Chiefs rookie mini-camp two weeks ago on a tryout basis. They represent the second and third players signed from that weekend’s workouts that originally entered the camp without contracts (WR <nobr>David Grimeshttp://www.kcchiefs.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.kcchiefs.com/team/roster/david-grimes/34af4dbf-66bf-4fff-a74d-f0f9f88ff2a5/)</nobr> was the first of the tryout players to sign on May 4th).

With the Chiefs roster now sitting at 85 players, Kansas City still has the ability to add up to three more players so long as each of the seven 2010 draft picks remain unsigned and S <nobr>Jarrad Pagehttp://www.kcchiefs.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.kcchiefs.com/team/roster/jarrad-page/ad11a70f-5b65-4957-be74-bc1530de398c/)</nobr> not sign his tender. Those eight players do not count against the NFL’s roster maximum of 80 players since they are not currently under contract. The Chiefs will begin this morning’s OTA with 77 players under contract.

Quick hitters on each of the new signees, courtesy the public relations department…

[I] Banks (6-3, 243) played in 23 games in two seasons at Southern Mississippi, catching 34 passes for 462 yards (13.6 avg.) with four TDs. He began his collegiate career at Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, Mississippi, where he recorded 62 receptions for 1,098 yards (17.7 avg.) with six TDs. He prepped at Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

[I] Fitzgerald (6-4, 280) played in 12 games at Kansas State in 2009, recording 40 tackles (24 solo), 10.0 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks (-67.0 yards), one INT, seven passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. He played in 25 games in two seasons at Virginia, tallying 137 tackles (72 solo), 24.0 tackles for loss, 12.0 sacks (-64.0 yards), four INTs, seven PDs, three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. He prepped at Hermitage High School in Richmond, Virginia.

Jones (5-11, 180) played in 47 games (41 starts) at Akron, working at both defensive back and wide receiver. The Washington, D.C. native compiled 183 tackles (119 solo), 4.5 stops for loss, a sack (-7.0 yards), four INTs, 10 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He also posted 80 receptions for 1,231 yards with 11 TDs, in addition to 36 punt returns for 348 yards and 29 kickoff returns for 586 yards with a TD. Jones was an all-state selection as a senior at Forestville High School in Forestville, Maryland.

Each of the newest Chiefs are expected to practice this morning.

Sweet....we're going to be running that elusive 7 TE offense!

These guys are dead set on finding the next Mark Bavaro. It happened in New England under Parcells and Belichick and with the Jets under Parcells (Becht).

Parcells got "him" in Dallas with Jason Whitten and Sean Payton traded for him in New Orleans (Shockey).

The tight end plays a vital role in the Erhardt offense (which is odd because they traded away Gonzalez).

I wonder if Fitzgerald is another RDE so that Dorsey can play NT.

yes ... all 3 are probably training camp fodder but it still shows where they are trying to add another body.

It's funny though because they have whiffed so many times trying to find him. Pioli has been drafting and signing TEs almost every year and missing completely.

If you have ever seen Fitz play.....you'd know he has a decent shot at making this team

I agree, he always seemed to have a nose for the ball.
His biggest problem might be his "tweener" size.

I'm surprised Fitzgerald didn't get drafted. He has the size of a 3-4 end, he played in a 3-4 at Virginia, and he was productive. He definitely has a shot at making the team.

Radio guys said he's a tweener. Needs to lose 20 lbs to play olb.

Radio guys don't know shit. He's not an OLB. He played 3-4 DE at Virginia and he was productive, and he played 4-3 DT at K-State and he was productive. He's a 3-4 end.
