So I teach some literacy classes at my school to kids who, generally, have no success in school. I teach it at the high school, and some of these kids read at the 4th grade level.

Anyway, we just did this massive playwriting project where they wrote their own plays. We brought in local playwrights and such to help us out. We then went to perform them today at a local theater.

At the end, we found out that the theater company who we've been working with selected one of the scripts to be performed by professional actors on Saturday at a statewide new playwright festival (which is a pretty big deal).

I've been completely bitching and moaning about this project, which has been a total pain in the ass for the last month. Today, though, it all came together. These kids are on Cloud 9, and they can't believe that "real" actors are going to be performing their script this Saturday. Such a very powerful experience for them.

Outstanding! That's a proud moment for you. Hell, you could probably sell the story to ABC for a movie deal!

Well done, Phin!

That's pretty cool.

I'm confused, though. Did they pick one kid's script to do, or did the whole class write a single script? It seems like the latter would be really hard to do.

Edit: never mind. I just saw the "one of them" part of the original post. [Exit stage left.]

It's actually been a long process. We're also working on teaching teamwork and collaboration, so the process started with them creating characters. We then combined the characters into groups of 4-5 that we felt "worked." They then, collaboratively, wrote their scripts by basically roleplaying their characters through situations. The one that won, though, was really taken over by a hispanic kid who is really near and dear to my heart. Great artist and a great dancer. Soul of a poet... but the background of a gangster. This project might be the thing that pushes him fully out of the bullshit and into the realm of feeling that he can truly succeed with his art.

That's cool.

Maybe when this kid becomes rich and famous, you can ride his coattails.

Off topic, I have a question.

Now that's Trent Green has taken to the broadcast booth as an analyst, are you going to be changing your name to NewAnal?

I didn't even change my name to NewRam when he went back to St. Louis. Of course, NewRam is way worse than NewAnal.
